The amount of people thinking this device is an e-book / e-ink device is shocking.

Tablet PCs have existed for over a decade now. So surely there's a market for one with Apple's OS and design ?
I don't think it's an e-book device. I think I have no possible use for a device in that form factor except an e-book.

Not buying the first gen product. If the 2nd gen comes with MULTITASKING then I'll probably be buying it. That is what I wanted. I'll just be sticking with my iPod Touch 2nd Gen for the time being for my living room surfing tool (unless I'm feeling up to using my EEE).

2nd Gen would sell blockbusters with
- Multitasking
- Front facing camera + back facing camera
- Landscape keyboard dock

Gahaha, no camera? It'd be hysterical if that beast had a camera.
Yep, agreed, same thing I've been waiting for before getting the Itouch. You know it's coming eventually, just gotta wait for the newer models to come.

Good read. As someone that actually does, has, and will continue to develop using ActionScript 3/Flash, I can only provide my insight as to why Flash can cause crashes -- and it is the same reason that a lot of desktop applications crash, too: Shitty developers developing shitty code.

You would be amazed at how many giant web development firms have their Flash developers make their web products using timeline animation and ActionScript 2.0. Equally, you would be amazed at how many big clients (ie, Intel) will require the firms they hire to develop in ActionScript 2 while using timeline animations. Reason being for the lot of them? Actionscript 8 and lower has a higher penetration than Actionscript 9 or 10 -- by 0.1%!

http://www.adobe.com/products/player_census/flashplayer/version_penetration.html

So the problem with Flash is systemic: performance woes because of a penis-measuring contest between Adobe and Apple, companies requiring their projects to be developed in deprecated code to save money, and large web firms unwilling to utilize, hire, or encourage the use of proper development guidelines when it comes to Flash, thus leading to shoddy Flash projects.

What's worse, and what people seemingly do not talk about in the same vein which I think they should, JavaScript (AS and JS are both based on EMCAScript), is vulnerable to the same issues. I just find it odd that Flash is being singled out when if done properly, it is an extremely powerful tool that provides an experience that conventional HTML, CSS, and JavaScript simply cannot.

This was a better read than that article.

Pretty big fail. I was hoping for at least gimped multitasking similar to Chrome OS where they have the taskbar at the bottom for Google Talk.

From what I can see, you can't cleanly use this thing for an IM app, Pandora, and Safari at the same time, and that's what would have been the big selling point for me as a total lounging around product.
Agreed. Even just mulittasking only iphone apps would have been a manageable step up.

But... it's $499!!!

They went with AT&T again for the 3G? :lol
no. that is just the partner offer in the US. It's unlocked though so you could presumably take it on T-Mobile (Edge) or even worldwide if you wanted on your national 3G provider.

iphone is actually locked to AT&T and if you buy one are in a contract. This is substantially different.

It's an over sized iPod Touch with Kindle-esque features, iWork and a full version of iTunes. Really no point in getting this. I already have an iPod Touch. Why would I need/ want this?

EDIT

It's not a bad thing. But come on. This is a novelty. I was hoping for Mac OS Mobile or something.

Welp... I love how Brushes looks, but with no stylus I just couldn't care any less.. For random sketches using my finger I think I will just stick to the iPod Brushes and SketchBook apps.

No one seems to have noticed the keyboard layout is different:

apple-tablet-keynote_041.jpg

It's missing the ";" key, which means if you learned how to type from a school, your pinky will now be resting on the "enter" key instead of ";" Also, you can't even rest your fingers on the home row of the keyboard because it's touch sensitive. Kinda stupid...

This comes from someone who thinks the iPhone is the coolest and most useful gadget he's ever owned: This is one of the most curious products Apple has released in a long time. No flash? No CD/DVD drive? 16-64 GB of storage? It's merely a fat, expensive iPhone iPod Touch! Yikes.

Sure, but this doesn't run OSX, multitask or have a stylus for graphic artists. It isn't a proper PC. It is a smartphone, larger without the phone.

It seems like it has all of the downsides of the iphone in a larger version. I will make compromises with a smart phone because it is small and a phone.

I'm in for this. This product is exactly what I wanted, basically a super-size version of my Touch. Don't care about 3G particularly. I'm sure other folks wanted more but this was what they needed to get me, so mission accomplished.

The iPad looks like a huge step in the right direction and there is no doubt that in a few years this will be the way many people will browse the internet and consume books and magazines but Apple have come up short on a few key features that competitors and Apple will hopefully integrate over time.

Does anyone know how far away we are from a full lcd screen to be combined with some sort of e-ink technology or whether thats even possible?

I mean seriously. The MS Courier looks way more interesting than this.

Microsoft has a habit of showing-off concepts and tech demos, only to disappoint with the final product. (If it even comes out.)

Apple doesn't show-off stuff until it's done, and the disappointment primarily comes from the hype that people imaginations have whipped-up.

Awful thread title just begging to attract negativity :lol

Conference did nothing to separate this from the rational part of anyones brain that is screaming "just get a laptop?". Apples weakest rollout since AppleTV. Cheap entry price, but at 16gb and no 3g you've really got to be kidding.

Will be interesting to see how it succeeds, but its an iProduct, so the voodoo spell is already in effect.

It's sexy as hell but I'll pass for now. I'm excited to see where the 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th iteration will go. My Mac Pro is just 1.5 years old so I won't be buying another personal computer for a few years.

SOLD. :D

:lol

I wasn't sure that I wanted one before the event, and I'm not sure I need one after the event.

Pricing is better than expected. I'd be happy with a 32GB wifi only - I can use my phone as a mobile 3g modem via wifi if needed. I'm not paying probably £100 more just for the benefit of also paying maybe £25 per month on top for data.

disappointed that its 4:3 as I have less interest in ebooks compared to movies/photos etc, so would have preferred something closer to 16:9.

Also can't believe it doesn't have even one camera. Didn't need 5mp or anything, just a couple of decent webcams front and back. Would have been perfect for mobile ichat. I'd have bought my parents-in-law one immediately - they're technophobes but could probably handle one of these if I set it up for them. Also shuts out augmented reality stuff too. No GPS, so I'm guessing google maps was using basic wifi location?

Gaming is possibly a primary driver for this for me. I'd love to play even the current app store games on a bigger screen, and the thought of optimised games with new interfaces is very interesting.

The other primary reason is the fact I spend a lot of time browsing the web/checking email, so this (with a 10 hour battery) would be very useful compared to my MBP which tends to need charging a lot. Although typing unnecessarily verbose forum posts would be trickier.

I went from a desktop to a laptop for convenience above all. This could make me move to a tablet for day to day internet, and maybe go back to a desktop for photo/video editing etc (eg a lovely 27" imac...)

So, tempted to buy one instead of a 3GS ipod touch, but also tempted to see if they refresh in a year with a $100 price cut and/or GPS+camera.

I honestly think Apple are testing the market to see how far people will go on brand alone. The very thought of someone owning one of these giant ipod touches is hilarious.

32GB 3G-less SKU, here i come.

ps: are apple the first company to realize not everybody needs 3G unconditionally, in every fuckin gadget? i already have 2 3G devices that can do tethering, i don't need another one.

Yeah I am slightly disappointed. The on-screen typing kills this for me. Yes the is a keyboard but then I can just carry my laptop around. It's not the Apple way but a stylus would have made this spectacular imo. I'm gonna pass.

what is the iphone -> ipad functionality look like?

I already have 3G service, I don't need to pay for it again. I want a kindle/e-reader of some sort so I am preliminary interested in this - but I am not sure

The homescreen has a background. I wonder if users can change that without jailbreaking? Do we even need to jailbreak this stuff? Apple didn't give one peep about user installed software aside from the AppStore so I guess that's not happening :(

What does no multitasking mean exactly? Does this mean that you can't have a webbrowser open and your word document open at the same time???

as a photographer, this would be the only reason for me to buy the ipad. too bad i can't load pics directly into the damn thing. maybe the ipad 2.0 will have a usb slot or card reader

It's kind of a neat piece of technology but I don't really need or want it. Maybe in a few years they'll come up with some really cool stuff to do with this kind of thing.

any info about family use? If this is going to be used 'in the kitchen', I'd expect it to be able to sync together multiple calendars, perhaps allow easy switching of user accounts so it can be left on the coffee table for anyone to use etc.

LOL! People are gonna pay an arm and a leg for this mess. F that. I'm waiting for the Winter, and hopefully Chrome OS becomes a reality. There'll be a raft of tablets in this mold then. Apple kinda dropped the ball here. I was expecting more. PEACE.

app store is reason enough right now to go for something like this if you want a simple tablet type device. And the price is pretty reasonable IMO

I believe Steve said you could use your own photos and set them as background?
