I don't think I'd be caught dead with that case.

That said, you'd want to be able to scroll or flip pages.

The iPhone is actually a very good one handed experience. I'm going to get an iPad, but I don't think I'd ever want to bring it to a coffee shop. It would attract too much attention. Well, until everyone has one.

Well if you're in a lounge chair, where do you put your coffee down at? I'm just thinking of what I've done in the past where I've got the laptop on the table, reading a website, coffee in hand, and scrolling down as I drink and read. Hard to do that when you need 1) A hand to hold it, 2) another hand to scroll, and 3) one to hold your coffee. At the worst case scenario, you can't scroll and drink at the same time. It just seems more awkward to juggle that.
 
One thing I always wondered....

With the hate between Jobs and Adobe, why not buy up a small company and Apple release their own version of Photoshop?

Look, I could spend hours to find them again but I didn't know any particular models offhand. The simple fact is they exist. I saw plenty of them over the last few months. They range in quality but there are some that have Atoms. I'm not saying that's the only one. It's like geez, you got proven wrong about not being able to do the combo and now you want to pick apart semantics. I'm not saying it was an ultimate PC, and heck a lot of you defenders think the $350 netbooks don't cut it either. The point is you said it was $350, and if you look you can find them for $199, $249 and $299, all which add up to less than an iPad. But hey if that's what you gotta do to feel better, more power to you but if you look, you can find them.

You are really, really over thinking this. If there's a chair, there's probably a table to set my drink down NEXT TO (not in front) of my chair. Also, why do I need to be doing something with my computing device AND drinking coffee simultaneously. I'm holding my tablet, I continue to hold my tablet in one hand as I lift the cup with the other, take a sip, and set it back down, and then I have two free hands to manipulate the device until I once again require another sip of my coffee.

yeah I was gonna say pretty much the same way the Iphone currently juggles two different browser windows. A little indicator on the bottom telling you how many apps are currently open, you touch that and it does the shrink effect and lets you scroll through them.

You have the same problem with a laptop. You can't type on a laptop and drink your coffee at the same time. I suppose you could still 2-finger scroll on the touchpad if your computer has it, but I rarely see people who even know about that. Plus not having a hot laptop on my crotch would be a plus. :lol :lol
 
Just extended my developer account, toying with a few different ideas for a simple POC.

Anyone have any app ideas they'd like to see come to life? PM me to make sure I don't miss it.

:lol Why exactly? Ridiculous prices, few updates from year to year, poor/cumbersome UI....
And it doesn't run like a dream or anything on Mac. If anything, they could create their own version like they did with Final Cut basing it off of the Avid kernel.

I did that tonight...on my iPhone. Wished it had a bigger screen, so I will be ordering an iPad :lol

I still feel that way about my iPhone and when I take it out, people give me so much crap. I am now immune to it. Caribou coffee + iPad = Win.
 
I'm actually warming up to this device actually. I was a bit disappointed because many of rumors talked about a revolutionary UI, which didn't really pan out. It's evolutionary at best. I but really think this thing is gonna be big.

I think many of critics have to understand that this is gonna another Wii type market disturber. Netbooks themselves are popular they are good enough for most people. Most people don't need to edit HD video or play Crysis at the highest settings.

Especially with Apple's in store marketing via their retail stores, I can see many people falling in love this. Many tech pundits who have actually played with the thing have been impressed by the overall package. But the gadget blogs are succumbing to bulleted point feature list, which didn't matter for iPod or the iPhone. Given the evolving nature of the iPhone OS, I believe the biggest issue will be addressed.

Photoshop is an industry standard.

Apple making their own version wouldn't change that in the slightest.

This discussion is really asinine.

I'm not going to define my experience of either device over whether or how I can hold a cup of coffee at the same time. I'll be able to do it with both. It'll be different, one may even be better, but I think the talk about it is a really odd thing.

That said, I'm lounging right now with my 15" laptop. The bottom of the laptop is on my lap, and it's up against my abdomen, the screen is folded back, and it's fine. Keeping me warm too :)

No doubt there's an ideal use for each form factor, but I'm not going to let it bug me whether I can hold a cup of coffee at the same time.

As a tablet it seems very affordably priced......shit, even an Ion Netbook will run you $400 at this point. You've had competitors being comfortable for a couple weeks announcing all these products with all the bells and whistles attached, and now they're forced to cut back on all the bells and whistles as they reconsider what it will mean now that they don't have the Apple Tax giving them a lot of pricing leighway. Maybe they can get away with coming in $50-100 cheaper, but such a small margin hasn't exactly helped iPod and iPhone competitors.

The lack of features and control over the experience strikes me as very Wii-like. Consider all the weird limitations that Nintendo has put over the online experience and the Wii-Ware/DLC markets.

I'd wager that most people are not going to have a lot of fun with a $200 netbook. For all the hubub about Flash, I'm told most of them still do streaming video like garbage since it's very processor-intensive and the Intel Atom is garbage (that must also cope with the overhead of running Win7). Even something like the Ion chip won't accelerate streams that that much, for whatever reason (I'm not sure if Flash supports videocard acceleration yet, though it is supposed to at some point).

i can guarantee you i've never looked at netbooks. ever. and i have no clue how they fare in price/performance. i just suck on that kool-aid, that's the truth.

but since we're on the subject netbooks now, here's the one you most likely meant to post but could not find a link to:

the fabled nokia 10h-lasting netbook (great beer, fair prices).

Also, I hear the book reading experience is fantastic on a $200 netbook. And my goodness, the magazine reading experience on a $200 netbook must be sublime!

FFS dude FFS. You guys brought up the I can do better for $500 and then use $200 for the price of the netbook to make your argument. Don't say bullshit you can't back up then. You're getting crazier than you usually get.
 
As a college student it is a no purchase for me at the moment.

HOWEVER, I am building a new desktop at the end of this year. Once I graduate college next year, I will honestly have no need for a powerful mobile computer. That's where the slate will come in for me. Depending on how well the ebook capabilities of the iSlate have come along I can see myself evolving into the following technology setup versus my current.

Current:
iPod touch
Macbook Pro
Kindle
non-smart phone

After college:
Desktop
iSlate
Smartphone, most likely iPhone.

If I am out and about at a coffee shop I would absolutely love to just whip out my iSlate and browse. I have few qualms with Safari mobile, especially on that bigger screen.

I was going to mention that. And netbooks don't have access to the appstore. Say what you will, but there's some compelling fun stuff on there. Emphasis on fun.

I've seen Netbooks plenty of times at $199 in passing. I'm sorry I didn't have the forethought that I'd need it to satisfy iPad defenders in the future. I've seen $199 plastered in Fry's all the time. I just didn't have it handy.
 
The thing is the iPad would work as a multitasker pretty damn well. In Landscape, you can fit two "iPhone" apps side by side perfectly.





Larger rectangles would be the apps resized to fill the screen, the smaller rectangles are 320x480 iPhone screens. Can't wait to see what the 2nd generation of this brings!!!

See I'm the opposite. If this turns out how I hope then I can't wait to use this to take notes/read my books so this is all I'll need walking into class every night.

I agree; I didn't mean for it to go this far. I was just thinking in past experiences of how I've kicked back and relaxed and then thought about how I'd have to hold the tablet in one hand which more or less renders that hand useless. That was the only thing I was trying to point out, but then NinjaScooter below actually points out a perfectly fine solution.

Ergonomically, the problem I foresee is trying to type on the iPad (or any tablet) when you are sitting at a desk during a lecture or powerpoint presentation - which is the scenario that I do the majority of my mobile computing in.
 
And another thing. You don't need a blazing fast computer to surf the web or do many ordinary things. I think for too long we have been obsessed with Moore's law that we forgot that there is more to technology than it being simply faster. Thus the introduction of Netbooks, and now touchscreen tablets.

Not everyone is going to be gaming on the go. This device will play movies, view pictures, and play music just fine while being able to surf the internet just fine. That covers a rather large swath of the population including me shortly. I'm not going to be doing Matlab coding or running complex simulations in Cadence while in a coffee shop or on my couch. I am going to be reading GAF or perhaps reading some paper. Others might be checking their social network or as Jobs highlighted, buying tickets for a movie.

The point is with a few exceptions, there really isn't a large need for superfast computing on mobile platforms. Battery life, size, portability, and ease are much more important.
 
 
And just to temper what I said about the iPad being very Wii-like, I am also getting a very heavy PSP vibe from it to :D Just the sense that there's all this pre-launch hype, everyone's ready to see it take off, but nobody actually wants to go into a store and throw down a huge chunk of change for it. I remember the PSP launch so many years ago where it felt like everyone was counting the days until the handheld god arrived, but when it finally landed the response at retail was kinda lukewarm. Everyone thinks it's great, but most of them would rather wait for a 2.0 version or a better price. In my case I'd rather wait and see what the next iPhone looks like -- whether they stay with AT&T or whether they finally introduce multitasking being the major questions.

This is a nice idea. I think the chipset just isn't optimised to draw two windows at once.

But if I could do that it would amazing to run two tetras windows and try and play both at once.

Actually, that should be a whole series of new apps - dual games.
