Its more functional than an ereader. Its a better book reader than a netbook/laptop. You get the idea.
I myself don't have much use for laptops, because I think they suck, of all places, on your lap. I've gotten to where I just keep my iPhone right beside me all the time when I'm in my house, so I don't have to go to my desk when I want to quickly check email, browse web, whatever. I'd love to have a larger screen to do those things. I'd be great on the nightstand.
I'm not saying the thing is perfect or doesn't have plenty of room to grow, but regardless of wether you see it or not, there's a use for a larger iPhone/iPod touch.

wikipediaIn-plane switching was developed by Hitachi Ltd. in 1996 to improve on the poor viewing angle and the poor color reproduction of TN panels at that time.[4] Its name comes from the main difference from TN panels, that the crystal molecules move parallel to the panel plane instead of perpendicular to it. This change reduces the amount of light scattering in the matrix, which gives IPS its characteristic wide viewing angles and good color reproduction.[5]
Initial iterations of IPS technology were plagued with slow response time and a low contrast ratio but later evolutions have made marked improvements to these shortcomings. Because of its wide viewing angle and accurate color reproduction (with almost no off-angle color shift), IPS is widely employed in high-end monitors aimed at professional graphic artists, although with the recent fall in price it has been seen in the mainstream market too.[4]
Marty Chinn said:So you're advocating packing an iPad and a laptop over a Kindle and a laptop because really the iPad lacks in so many areas that you could possibly need a laptop anyway. Personally I wanted something that merged the best of both worlds between a Kindle and a laptop and the iPad doesn't deliver that. Just because it's out doesn't mean we should settle for it and that is why there is negative reaction.

Marty Chinn said:1) Yes. You can either do it from an app developed by the store or bank or just use the normal web interface
2) There is a MSN Messenger app like Beejive (it does more than just MSN), and I have to assume you can have push notifications on this so you could in theory do that. Still will be a pain to switch between the two IMO, especially since Beejive can take awhile to connect and retreive the messages.

If you want to argue that a device with one of it's main points being able to surf the web, and then not allowing flash period, that's just idiotic.

Tobor said:For the love of Pete, no. I think having the keyboard be optional is superior. For consumers who will never need it, they don't buy it. For consumers that do need it, they can buy one. The first thing Asus and Acer will start copying from this design is optional bluetooth keyboards.
Do you concede that having a keyboard permanently attached to your display is inferior for reading ebooks?
huha said:I hate the "political reasons" argument. Why are they doing that? They're most likely actively denying their customers support for flash, for which they should be shunned. Adobe doesn't really make quality products, and I'm not a fan of flash, but citing political reasons is just so incredibly cheap.
Still, I wonder how it'll sell. Adding multi-tasking support should be their #1 priority, because I still think it's pretty much useless without it. The power it has to offer should be sufficient, unless all of it is blown on making it look slick and pretty.

I don't get why anyone with an iPod Touch/iPhone and a MacBook would want this.
I think this thing will be a huge pull for normal non tech savy people. We might not like it but a large majority of users love the concept of the boxed in app store centric device.slider said:I've only just dipped into the thread and am still catching up. So far I gotto say I'm underwhelmed. But that's cos of my own expectations. I was expecting revolution. C'mon somebody, leave your competitors in your wake. I want revolution dammit.

Yeah that could be a problem. I do most of my readig lying down.Marty Chinn said:Oh here's another avenue I think that hasn't been touched on. This thing weighs 1.5 pounds right? I don't know about anyone else, but that's kinda heavy compared to a book or a Kindle or a Nook and that I would imagine put strain on the wrist for extended reading periods. Might not be so ideal for an eReader either.
