Are There Any More GotY Contenders Coming Out in 2017?

I'm going to go out and say that I 90% believe that BotW won't win GAF's GOTY this year; instead it'll go to Persona 5, RDR2 or, if it comes out, God of War. The game is too fanbase-limited and too "controversial" to win in my eyes.

Controversial? What?

Out of all games that release this year, Zelda has the biggest chance to win on GAF. I think only Horizon or Red Dead will come close. Everything else doesn't stand a chance.

And maybe God of War, but I don't think that's coming this year.

No Truce With The Furies

I'd say these two games have a shot at GOTY 2017.

May not be as epic in scope as BotW, but given that Journey (PS3) got lots of GOTY nods, I don't feel they need to anyway.

A shot where exactly? They look interesting, but they certainly aren't going to win many overall GOTY awards at 99% of places.

Outlets that cover a broader spectrum than the typical AAA space.

A number of smaller productions have won GOTY from major sites in recent years. Gone Home, Journey, Undertale, The Walking Dead, etc.

With the rise of digital distribution and independent publishing, it feels like many are casting a wider net when considering who deserves top honors at the end of the year.

If Bungie takes everything they learned from the first game to heart, Destiny 2 has game of the generation potential.

If Bungie takes everything they learned from the first game to heart, they might actually ship the game Bungie originally described as Destiny 1. The fact that Bungee was comfortable with shipping Destiny 1 the way it was just leaves me with low expectations. Further lowered by that Destiny's critical and commercial success.

There's no way I could expect Bungie to go from Destiny 1 to the greatest shooter of the gen in its sequel. That'd be a mighty fucking leap and I genuinely don't think them capable of it.

This year in gaming is pretty incredible considering Persona 5, Red Dead 2, and Mario Odyssey are still on their way after Zelda, Resident Evil, and Horizon Zero Dawn all came out. There's also still Xenoblade 2 (presumably).

Assassin's Creed could be absolutely amazing.
It really could I feel like one of the few really excited for it. Hope they deliver. But even with a great game the series doesn't have as much love for it as these others coming out this year so still don't expect it to win many GOTY. Would be happy to be wrong!

GOTY this year will gonna be insane... Lol

I was thinking the same thing.

Can you imagine this list of GOTY if all games come out by the end of the year?

Resident Evil 7
Yakuza 0
Gravity Rush 2
Nioh
Halo Wars 2
Horizon Zero Dawn
The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild
Nier Automata
Persona 5
Splatoon 2
Ni No Kuni 2
Destiny 2
Red Dead Redemption 2
Battlefront 2
God of War IV

That's 15 games just off the top of my head.

Super Mario Odyssey is the big one, as the giant leap forward from 64/Sunshine to Galaxy/3DW had more to do with the tightness of design from the Tokyo team as it did with the spectrum of openness/linearity. Given the precedent of the Galaxy/3DW era, I think Odyssey is absolutely capable of knocking the socks off 64/Sunshine while capturing what people who prefer "open" 3D Mario love about the format.

And though I know this won't be more than a drop in the bucket in any conversation over here in AAA console-land, if Factorio hits 1.0 this year it will absolutely stand as a major landmark in my books, just on the strength of what I've played already in the alpha builds.

There are already a lot of games GOTY-worthy, not just Zelda

And then there is still Persona 5 next month and Red Dead 2 later in the year (hopefully). If God of War is 2017, then there is that too. Also Mario Odissey!

Should be a year for the ages!

Edit: OMG I forgot Ni no Kuni 2! This year man...

seriously though Breath of the Wild this year feels like that 3 point contest with Larry Bird where he was just like "who's playing for second?" didn't even take his warm up shirt off. needed the last ball to go down to win and he was walking away with his finger in the air before it even dropped. Breath of the Wild is the video game version of that.

I think there are a lot of contenders for better games left this year, but that doesn't translate into the mainstream popularity contests that are most GOTY awards.

What a weak year

If Mario Odyssey delivers like I hope it will (GOAT 3D Platformer), has there ever been a developer/publisher that released two GOTY/GOTG candidates in the same year?

Realistically, Red Dead 2 and Destiny 2, along with Horizon and Zelda that are already here. Crackdown 3, Super Mario Odyssey, God of War Nordic, and Persona 5 are your long-shots.

If we're strictly talking about goty awards, there's a Rockstar game coming out, and there's a Mario game coming out. Those are the two big ones, if they make it this year.

To be fair, Nintendo didn't release a GOTY contender besides perhaps Xenoblade X since Mario Galaxy 2...

people are playing the game wrong. A JRPG is not gonna pose any threat to Zelda.

What we look for is
a) is there a game coming out this year that is a "critical darling franchise" or made by a "critical darling studio" like Zelda is
examples: Mario, Skyrim, a game by Rockstar, a game by Naughty Dog etc.

b) the genre and setting
preferably something open world or with open areas, in a western setting. maybe closer to medieval and fantasy than modern and realistic, but it's not a dealbreaker

If these two criteria are not met, then we look for the wildcard.
RDR2 and Mario, I'm telling ya. A JRPG is never gonna make it.

And I still think Zelda easily takes this year since it has so many things going for it when it comes to appeasing the mainstream tastes, aside from being an incredible game.

I completely disagree, but in the end like you said, both too niche anyhow lol

They're completely different, even though they are J-RPGs at the core, so it's no surprise they polarize that way among gamers. I am happy both exist but Persona 5 is perhaps my most wanted game since... Persona 4 golden ^^

This guy gets it. When was the last time we actually had a GOTY that wasn't made by western developers or Nintendo.

Id say persona for sure, alot of postotivr hype around it and i even know friends who dont play jrpgs who are just intrigued by its style. After that red dead for sure, in fact i think in most circles this year is going to be a very close tie between red dead, zelda, and mario. With persona and horizon getting honorable mentions. I also belive that prey is going to suprise a lot of people and be this years doom
