Are you ever tired of gaming?

I used to. I've learned to become more picky about the games I like related to my tastes.

Saves me money, and I really enjoy when a game comes out. Like right now? so hype for Yakuza 4

I have my ups and downs. Lately I haven't been playing much, but I have a feeling all that will change when the new Mortal Kombat comes out.

I'd say my top 5 hobbies would be, in no particular order:
- Gardening
- Television
- Movies
- Gaming
- Programming

I go through periods where I'm bored of each. There's no reason not to mix it up. Tired of current games? Replay an old favourite or a classic you missed? Tired of big screen gaming? Get a portable. Tired of long epic stories? Play Bejeweled or PvZ or Fruit Ninja for a few days. Don't feel like making the effort to play a full game? Use cheat codes or watch some Youtube videos. Burnt out from news coverage? Stick to reading more analytical stuff. Burnt out from thinking? Play a stupid game. Totally burnt out with gaming? Try another hobby for a while.

I take breaks as well. Sometimes life is busy and when I go back it just doesn't feel the same. A big game usually sucks me back in when I don't feel the same about gaming.

Yes. After SS and PSX I have planned to purchase a PS2 and finally decided not to cause I got bored of them, and it was expensive to me as I was just getting into high school. Didn't touch any video games until few years later that I got dragged into MMO terf by my friends.

Sicked of them in awhile, didn't touch video games again until right before this gen begins. Where I purchased PS3 and PSP, for a few PS2 games I wanted to play and Monster Hunter basically for PSP.

That was an exciting time with the extraordinary console war, totally brought me now into the industry. Now I'm starting to get bored of it again, but I can't really quit now as it's part of my job. :o

Bored of games, go on GAF
Bored of GAF, go play games

Bored of GAF.... even when that happens I still browse GAF.

I almost don't game anymore (mostly because of work) but I still keep buying games, following the gaming news and getting on hype trains. There is something really wrong with me, I know.

It's more about genres for me... I tend to binge on one, get a bit burnt out, and then focus on another. 2009 and 2011 so far are all about RPGs. 2010 was the year of the FPS for me. I'll always love gaming though... 30+ years of it, and I enjoy it just as much now as I ever have.

Well, long ago I suddenly realized that I spent more time reading about games and collecting games than actually playing them. I already knew that before, but I didn't really think about it until then. So from that day, I decided to get my act together and actually start playing some games instead of just reading and collecting them. I can't stop collecting them, but I can easily start playing them.

And of course, there are times I'm just tired of games - but this is rare. It's usually just a sudden change of focus on different games. Sometimes I'm deeply into point'n'click, and there are always one game or two I want to either play through for the first time, or play through for the gazillionth time (like Monkey Island). Sometimes there's even a new game in the genre that I haven't played. Not long ago I played through Machinarium, and right now I'm playing Gemini Rue. Both games are exactly the kind of point'n'click that I like. Simple interface, interesting world and great atmosphere and music - and a good story of course.

I also sometimes get so fed up with modern games, that I just skip through a time-hole and only play old games, mostly on the Amiga. There's something about how (the great) games were made back than that makes them more fun to me at times.

problems with my eyes have slowed me down in lots of things I enjoys Anime, Manga, Gaming.

I'm hoping getting new portables will help me get back into it more. I got a large plasma hoping that would help but nope.

Nah.

I take a few weeks of not playing any games sometimes between releases I'm interested in and that usually keeps things fresh for me.

Yes. I think I have to return to the world of more simple gaming for a while.

Hollywood games taste like shit now.

This is actually my current sate of mind and these days am mostly into playing games where I don't have to spend much time like sports or fighting. I'm probably going to unload my Wii and a bunch of games because I don't have the passion/interest in gaming like I once did and no longer need to be a multi console owner though I guess I'll still be one with a 360 and PS2 ;D

sometimes I think I should just sell everything and start a different hobby. but the few times I tried that, I end up buying back just about everything that I sell six months later. Now when I get bored, I just put them to the side for a couple weeks.

no, when I'm bored, i change the game I play, something like a complete turnaround in genres for a while, and here we go again !

Haha, all you people saying new technology is the key to getting excited about playing videogames again couldn't be further away from my position. The end of the generation is when things start getting awesome! Such a glut of good games, probably most of my favorite games of all time come out near the end.

Also not sure why there's angst over not playing videogames for certain periods, of course you're supposed to switch your hobbies about, that's what makes you a normal human being!

I would say I get burned out more than anything. It comes and goes as dealing with a new house, wife, job, bills and school has caused me to adjust my hobbies a bit to be more in line with my responsibilities.

Two things.

It seems that a lot of people try to make gaming a larger component of their lives than is sensible. I get tired of gaming now and then naturally.

Number two, it depends on what games are coming out. Sometimes I want something new, sometimes I just want something good. If nothing has come out for a few weeks I may rather read or write or watch movies or something.

yeah. i have access to a shitload of games (dorm buddies ftw) but the only ones i can be bothered to play are FIFA, NBA 2K11 and Blur.

ever since i got to college, i havent felt like playing a game with a story. too time consuming in a way that isnt really rewarding

I make sure I mix it up to keep my games fresh. If I get bored of working through my gigantic backlog then I'll just chill on some multiplayer games and vice versa. I also like to play multiple games at once, one on each platform generally. I'm currently playing Bulletstorm (360), Uncharted 2 & Super Mario Galaxy, it's glorious.

It's the only thing I have in my life so I hope not.

Amen to that.

On a related note, I was pondering the fact that gaming has been the only constant in my completely wasted life, no permanent job, didn't finish college, no interesting romance etc. I've been playing for nearly 25 god damn years, and the only thing that it never occurred to me to change was gaming. What if I just didn't do it? I don't think I've missed a day since I was 5, ergo changing this constant could theoretically lead to different results.

But that sounds to me like magical thinking, I mean I'd still be the same poorly motivated lout, just bored beyond all belief.

As I get older, certain games are a complete turn off and I just don't care about them anymore. Racing games. Done. Sports games. Done. However I'm still an MMO and shooter junky. With a little RTS on the side. ;)

So where does that leave me in the next 10 years? Who knows.

Edit: Oh and I think I came to realize that I'm a casual fighter game player. So not learning the top combos and teams is fine by me. I just love to play them.

Eh, occasionally, but I play stuff of so much variety and have enough other hobbies that I'm rarely bored. If I don't fee like gaming I lie down with my latest library book.

I've been getting sick of games a lot recently, save for the couple titles that can actually keep my attention long enough for me to finish it.

I need to get out more.

Yeah, sometimes. But it's not because I'm dissatisfied with the tech or anything. There are just some moments where I don't feel like gaming much. Usually, I'm deeply occupied with something else such as school, work, or just other hobbies like drawing. But after a week or two, I get right back in the mood.

Pretty much this for me, and it's only something that's really started happening in the past few months.

I also will still occasionally go into full-on hype mode for games I'm anticipating, and not want to play anything until the game has been released, regardless of genre.

Eh, I got bored of console gaming too much fps. Now its mostly handheld for me, RPGs all the time for me now.

Its just switching up that keeps shit fresh for me.

i went through like a 4 year phase of not liking games that much. i'd buy the new supposed "good" ones but they never grabbed my interest that much. i think the uncharted 2 release was when i got more interested again. this past year i've been more into games than i've been since the GTA days of ps2.

I'm going through that right now. I used to be on my 360 all the time and I even just got a PC gaming rig but most nights I just don't feel like it unless I have a league game or something.

Just today I was having a gaming mid-life crisis, thinking what a waste of time it is and how little it benefits my life. Then I started trolling Craigslist looking for bandsaws and lathes to start a wood working hobby shop.

Not much longer after that I discovered Project 1999, a classic EQ server. So yeah looks like I'll be gaming for a while longer ;)

Sometimes, but then I play an oldie or original indie game and then I'm good to go again

It's that time of year to be fair where it goes very quiet for a while (April onwards) for the holiday build up. I usually "rest" my gaming then and save it up for the September - March months.

This is very true, I think 90% of the gaming fatigue is to do with the quality of games as opposed to gamers themselves.

My problem is simply lack of time. I get from work somewhere between 6PM and 7PM, and I like to be in bed by 11PM if possible. That gives me 4 hours of fuck-around time, and at least an hour of that is eating dinner and bathing/showering, so I've got three hours total of free time every night.

And holy shit does that time fly. And then on the weekends I don't want to just stay home and play videogames, I want to be out and about, otherwise I feel like I've wasted it.

So yeah, big backlog of videogames on the shelf I haven't played yet.

Not bored, but for a few weeks I will just hate video games. Hate them with the core of my being... but that's usually during crunch time.

I think right now I've hit that point. I think everyone hits it eventually. Now all I do is play Halo Reach with friends only if friends are on. I remember when this gen started I went crazy and played games all day. Now I actually go outside and chill.

That certainly does happen from time to time.
But I'm lucky that I've realized that whenever I get bored or just completely tired of gaming the only thing I have to do is get a big pile of Saturn, PC-E, Super Famicom and Mega Drive games out of the rack.

Retrogames always pull me back in when I tire of the current gen.
Although I have to say that Nintendo does a great job of remedying this with games such as Kirby, Donkey Kong and Mario as of late. :)

Well when im pretty ocuppied with film school stuff (like right now) i pretty much dont play anything for about a week.

I do have some free time, but i just dont really feel like gaming, my mind is somewhere else.

I'm not tired of gaming, I'm tired of the same fucking games being released over and over. There's still great games coming out, unfortunately a lot more of these are simply re-treads or reskins of things that have been done before.

give me a new experience and I will gobble that shit up hardcore.

that said, I also have a LOT less time for games than I used to, which has led me to being a lot pickier than I used to be.

I'm tired of not having enough time to game as much as I want, which in turn, makes me tired of gaming, because it makes me tired to think about all the time I don't have to game.

Also, when I do find the time to game, it's usually at night. So I inevitable end up going on a gaming binge, and stay up entirely too late playing video games. Of course, the next morning I have to wake up early to go to work. So I end up sleep walking throughout the day at work, getting little done. Since I get little done during the day, I feel bad and end up working late into the night from home to get the crap done I didn't get done during the day. Which makes me tired again the next day.

Maybe if I didn't like to game I wouldn't be so tired all the time. I should quit.

Nope. 2 hours a night (after the kids are in bed) is just the right amount for me.

I have the same gaming habit. I make sure I spend as much time with my daughter and wife then gaming is my time. I also get a little tired/overwhelmed by the backlog or leveling up in games. I usually netflix or internet browse or read instead.

LOLOLOL, I laughed because... this is me. :(
At least right now my wife is really busy with her University so I can game alot more than usual.

Yeah, I'm much more interested now in reading about the gaming industry than actually playing. And it's almost as if anticipating a big release is more fun than playing it lol

Nope. I've been gaming pretty much non-stop since I was 7 or 8, I'm 29 now and I can honestly say I've never felt like I should give gaming a rest. Even though I don't like where the industry is heading, there are still more than enough great games coming out. This year being especially insane what with games like Zelda: Skyward Sword, Risen 2 (this year?), the Witcher 2, Dark Souls and more.
