ArmaGAF Community Thread: DayZ was actually a mod

Just got ARMA 3 and I'm gonna belooking for people to play with (once I finish the campaign) and for mod suggestions. I think I'll try Wasteland and one of the DayZ equivalents, probably either Epoch or Breaking Point.

I think Epoch for ArmA 3 is a bit better, it's still very much a bit of a walking simulator, but you don't have to worry about brain dead zombies anymore. However, you still need to look out for enemy players, managed to steal some guys truck and got myself killed about 5 minutes later. There's still too much emphasis on PvP, but it would be much better operating as a small team.

You really need to discover trash looting. Once you do, everything in Epoch becomes MUCH more fun.

Press T on piles of trash/baskets/stuff like that

Who would be up for an impromptu Arma night in a few minutes? I didn't have one scheduled, as I wasn't sure of my availability tonight. What do you guys think?

The helicopter DLC releases today. littleworm and I messed around with it last night on the Dev branch, and we even made a successful sling drop landing with a hunter.

Drop the Hunter!: http://youtu.be/pOF5kL4FM6I

The new flight dynamics are very nice, in particular I appreciate the sounds. I still have to test more with this.

Regarding that helicopter race I talked about, I think this update would be the time to do it.

Cheers, Hylian. I'll give it a shot.

Arma 3 Helicopter DLC now live on Steam. You can get it bundled with the upcoming Marksman DLC too.

Yep, I got the bundle of all of them. We will probably be having a "let's screw around with the new toys" session tonight. I will post info here and in the Steam group.

I can say one thing for sure about the advanced flight model: Piloting takes much more skill if you have it on, and I can guarantee you will see less people get on the pilot seats because of it. However I like the realism. Last night I played with it, tried to land, and was doing it like the old model, and of course ol' Vertex Ring State got me! Started going down super fast and panicked, not just moving out of it like you should. Glad to see that VRS is in though.

There are some concerns I have though.

1. If you don't own the DLC, you can't get in the new vehicles unless you spawn in them. This might splinter the community between those that want to buy it and those that don't. I wish Bohemia would maybe change this where if you don't own it, you can't get in the important seats like pilot or co-pilot, but can still ride as a passenger. It seems kind of dumb if you were on a heli insertion and extraction mission, that some people can't be extracted.

2. The advanced flight model is optional, but servers can force it. I'm afraid people might just stick with the old one just because more people can do it.

You can't get in the helicopters if you don't own the DLC? Well this is far worse than how Arma 2 worked.
Yeah, it sucks. The only way in is for you to spawn in one. If you get out, you can't get back in. If they at least let everyone ride as passengers I would be happy.

If I'm not mistaken though, the advanced flight model (which applies to all helos) is available to everyone.

Preeeetty sure you can get in to the vehicles. You just can't pilot them or operate the functions without owning the DLC

*EDIT*

Yep it's what I thought, you can get in as a passenger but can't get into the pilot, gunner and copilot seats without owning them.

Everything else is included in the platform update (the new flight model, sling loading, firing from vehicles) so you really only need to buy this if you think spending $15 on 2 helicopters is worth it.

Huh, I thought it was the way I said on the Dev branch, guess they changed it. Good on them.

So Littleworm made a really good suggestion last night: Helo Horse

Basically you would play it like you would play Horse in basketball. We would use the old flight model, and allow third person.

Speaking of the flight models, I played more with the advanced one last night. It is HARD, but definitely doable with lots of practice. There are some changes that bled over into the old flight model, such as landing on skids, rolling on wheels, manual landing gear control, etc.

It's really cool to see a much more accurate simulation like this. Probably the hardest part for me was adapting the way the collective responds in the new model. It's much different, and very easy to over correct.

Vortex Ring State isn't on the main branch yet, but it is coming, as it was in the Dev branch. This is a great thing.

Something else that happened to me last night a few times was tail rotor loss. This was because I wasn't applying any anti torque (twerk). This is done by pedals. In the old flight model, you could fly without ever touching the pedals (unless you wanted to do stuff like level turns). Now it simply isn't possible, as your tail rotor will say "Bye asshole!"

Speaking of rotors, I like the improved damage model, which will actually make your rotors disappear or show as mangled beyond use.

Overall I like this flight model, and will be practicing more to get to know it better.

More opinions on the flight model. I played with it more yesterday.

1. It is a HUGE benefit to use an Xbox controller/flight stick/whatever, especially with a TrackIR. The level of precision these things get you is necessary to use this flight model well.

2. In the control settings, there are two sets of collective bindings, one labeled "analogue" and one not. Since I use TrackIR, I decided to bind the analogue ones to my controller's right stick up and down. What this means is that if you don't touch the stick, your collective stays in the middle. This let's you quickly adjust your collective on the fly and it is quite nice. Definitely helped me with some of the problems I was having.

3. I still have automatic trim set on for now. I'm still unfamiliar with what trim is, and I want to master everything else before I throw that into the mix.

4. One thing this flight model does is let the helicopters bounce and slide a lot more on the ground, mainly because you can actually use skids and wheels. This is good, but at the same time given Arma's janky mechanic of "the glass is made of sodium and the ground is water", if you rollover at all, you blow up. This mainly applies to autorotations. Yesterday, most of the times I attempted autorotations, I landed, bounced or slid, then rolled over slowly and blew up, despite when I landed initially the occupants of the helo were unharmed. For now it's just something I have to compensate for, but it is really annoying.

Actually, I was thinking next weekend we might make an ArmaGAF contest out of it, and I would gift the winner the heli DLC.

I got my joystick out and played some coop missions with a friend and the advanced flight model has added some much needed complexity to helicopters which makes them much more fun to fly. It now feels like a real vehicle that reacts to your input and not something that is on rails.

Now I just need to figure out how prevent the different situations of stalling that I manage to get myself into.

The new multiplayer gamemode looks very fun. I got the chance see it in action this afternoon when Bohemia was streaming and I can't wait to try it out for myself. I just wish the servers could force advanced flightmodel and that there was a serverbrowser filter for it.

Tonight we will have an Arma night, time unconfirmed right now (I have some stuff to do).

However tonight will be all about ArmaGeddon

Make sure you install and enable this mod, it's also on PlayWithSix.

Littleworm, ZenVolta, NHApache, and I played through this thing last night. We did not make it to the end, but man it was the most intense thing. Come join us tonight, I will be back with a time once I have one nailed down.

I'll join you guys tonight I think, just need to be clear on the time zone.

It will probably be a tomorrow night.

Good news though, I got a dedicated server!

Quote for the server info!

We can use this server to play whatever A3 stuff we want to, can freely install mods, etc. It's a 20-man server. Right now Get Wrecked is running on it, feel free to go there and play if you want.

The answer to the question if Shack Tactical will use the Advanced Flight Model.

I can definitely see where he is coming from with his answer, and for ShackTac, I think that's the right choice.

For our group, it will probably be played by ear, but I can tell you it will either be forced on, or optional. The thing is that in our group. few of us actually fly the helos during missions, so having it on might give us a bit more challenge there.

However, I think it's damn near impossible to do with a keyboard and mouse on the advanced flight model. You don't need a Warthog to do it, as I think my Xbox 360 controller and TrackIR works just fine, but you definitely need something more precise than keyboard and mouse.

KB&M works for the regular flight model, and that's fine, as not everyone wants to buy all that stuff, and anyone can fly if they want to.

I'd like to announce our first ArmaGAF competition.

The Official ArmaGAF Helicopter HORSE contest!

The game is just like horse for basketball, only with helicopters of course. Here's a rundown of how it will go.

1. Everyone will be in an AH-9 Hummingbird, on the standard flight model.

2. There will be a random number generator to determine who is the leader for each round. You will be taken out of the RNG until everyone has had a turn being the leader. There will be a new leader each round.

3. The leader is to go do his trick. This can be flying through something narrow, spins, difficult landings, anything, as long as you don't crash or damage the helicopter. The leader can go anywhere on Altis, then declare he's beginning his trick. Keep them short and sweet, but there is no hard time limit on them. Just use common sense.

4. If the leader crashes/gets damaged during his trick, then he receives a letter of the word "HORSE".

5. If the leader does his trick successfully, then everyone must repeat that same trick the leader does. Note that speeds don't have to be exact, but must be reasonably close. For instance you can get away with going 100 km/h when the leader actually went 105 km/h, but if you were to do it at 20 km/h, you would get a letter. If anyone crashes or gets damaged, they get a letter.

6. The winner will be the last one standing without spelling the full word "HORSE".

Quote to see the server info:

This event will be next Saturday, November 22, at 9:00pm central time. Here is the steam event. Let me know if you need an invite to ArmaGAF

One more important thing: The winner will receive a copy of the Helicopter DLC, gifted from me! So get in those helicopters, and get to practicing!

I just bought ArmA 3. How do I get involved? Is there a gaf server or something like that?

If you hit Quote on the above post, you will see the Mumble server as well as my server hidden in the above post. We are usually hanging around in the mumble. If we aren't doing anything particularly organized, we are probably playing Wasteland or DayZ or something which is still fun! Come join us!

Working on a tank mission that involves driving through a town with a full tank crew, and FIRST PERSON ONLY.

One protip though: Don't test missions with AI drivers or gunners. They are total idiots.

I got a question can you play coop with a friend without the need of a dedicated server?

Technically, yes, you can host a local server. With two people and decent connections, it shouldn't be too much of an issue. However the best experiences of course come from joining larger servers or playing with bigger groups.

Rebel players staged a break-in and prison takeoever against cops... including using robbing a bank and taking hostages which they then used to demand a bulletproof prison busthat was then used to bring a big group of rebels into the jail gates. Its going down right now still.

Edit:
fixed url

guys this is crazy stuff going down iive right now....the president and secret service are on their way to the prison. rebels are demanding 4.5milllion in game cash.

I don't get it, I upgraded from 560 ti to 970 gtx and now my fps is worse when playing multiplayer at least. this game is so buggy and incomplete... kinda regretting ever buying it.

Most Arma fps problems are on the server side, apparently the new patches are improving this. I still have hope in Bohemia.

What CPU? OFP and ARMA has always been more CPU intensive than GPU, and yeah if you're playing multiplayer then the server hardware will make a big difference.

cpu is 2500k, but still fps shouldn't be worse with 970 than 560. it doesn't make any sense. In multiplayer I have like 20-30 fps. sometimes 10-15.

on single player I get 60+ fps with ultra.

So is the client fps capped by server fps? If that's the case... then BI are really a bunch of embarrassing amateurs.

I hope a brief server plug is ok in this thread. Admin Kick me if not. If anyone's after some quick and dirty action between GAF missions, I'm currently playing on a new AU hosted A3 Wasteland (Chernarus) server: http://shizweak.es/

We're a mix of mature-ish Arma & DayZ vets from the Whirlpool and Inthemix forums. The server went up this week, and aims to be a little more specialised that most Wasteland servers, so far requiring the following mods:

- All in Arma (for Chernarus)
- Massi Vehicles (for Arma 2 content)
- Massi Weapons (as above)

Links to correct versions are on the site. Planned additions include AGM and ASDG Joint Rails.
