ARMS Global Testpunch Thread: Let's see if this has LEGS

Fighting games aren't that deep tbh

I found ARMS to be very fun :)

I seriously disagree. Fighting games, including ARMS, have a lot of strategy to it and require a lot of skill to be great at them. In ARMS specifically you also have many different ARMS to equip, 10+ characters with different unique abilities and so on. Counter-picking will be fairly important in pro play.

Had those issues in my first testpunch, second one was much better, as I felt much more in control. If this is your first testpunch, I recommend trying it for another hour.

It's actually my third, I did better on my first when everyone was still trying to figure things out!

I only played one game of V-Ball and 3 skill shots (2/3 of the times was 2 v 2). Like both modes, but definitely need to get used to them a bit more. Headlock felt a little bit easier today. I was last man standing a couple of times against him (won the first time, was one hit away the 2nd time but the timer ran out) which was quite stressful.

I haven't played a single three for all in the last 2 rounds.

Also, you can hit the gong in the ramen bowl and it'll make noise. I had fun with that in my last match.

I'm seeing (and beating) a lot of Mechanica this weekend, probably lots of people trying her out because of last week's win ratio.

Disabling arms is do satisfying. I went up against a Twintelle who kept blocking me with her parasol and won. In the rematch, I aimed solely for that thing so she couldn't do anything.

btw,wtf is that Headlok thing? It's like it manipulated a random arms character
Looks like it takes an arms' body and then uses six arms from there. He's a freak of nature who just needs some loving.

This game seems like it isn't really about the base mechanics, its more about the weapons and how they behave. And while timing is a factor, familiarity with weapons and arms is a greater benefit I feel. I fought some fairly skilled players that when I faced them with characters using certain weapons entirely changed the situation.

I had a good ninjara that basically got nervous because of Helix guardian, when I made him seem like all it did was gaurd attacks he started getting paranoid when I started using it to zone him since I can leave it out forget about it and use the punch button again to attack with it later at any time while its out.

Minmin's biggest strength is that her dragon arm keeps a constant charge on her arm. I was basically unstoppable in skillshot and hoops using a constantly charged Megawatt.

In the full release, I see myself using her dragon ability with one of the faster arms with lightning, stun, or ice.

I finally found the time to play a session. I like this game.

Ultimate, No Nonsense, Indisputable Character Power Ranking:
  1. Minmin (Default)
  2. Ribbon Girl (Silver hair are a sliver better than the brown ones)
  3. Twintelle (4 great variations)
  4. Spring Man (Blonde)
  5. Mechanica (Camouflage)
  6. Master Mummy (Green)
  7. Ninjara (Default)
  8. Helix (Just a bummer all around)

Base mechanics are important though. attack-dodge-counter is like the fundamental loop here. How you alter that loop is crucial yeah, but if you suck at attack-dodge-counter, your arms won't help.

Urgh, i was 1 or 2 punches away from a perfect win and the servers go down :(

Had little interest before the test punch, now i'm in day 1 for sure.

ARMS is legit. Nintendo have done it again.

My first time with Testpunch this weekend. I immediately felt I had improved a lot by beating tutorial with 2x Perfect. Despite not playing for a week I got into it quickly, and I felt I could watch my opponent more this time around. I will only use motion control for this game, and my remaining two issues I need to get over is sometime grabbing when I want to punch, and forgetting to keep track of how I tilt my arms. Otherwise, I'm having no issues with the controls.

1v1 is still what I'm buying the game for. Skillshot was not for me, and I faced Headlok v4 twice with easy wins as result: someone said lvl 5 is much harder so I'll wait until I test more difficulties to give a final judgement on that one. Didn't get Hoops a single time tho. 2v2 is still a nice change of pace but not as fun as 1v1.

In the end, I just want the game to release already. I will go deep with this game.

Been playing a lot more and I've been enjoying the mobility of Ribbon Girl. All the hops and dodges dashes after a hop makes it very easy to punish someone's grab. I also love her standard gloves electric effect which paralyzes enemies for easy grabs/super moves. Managed to get to 107 before the servers gone away.

Did much better this time than last night. After getting my feet wet again, I felt fine. I also learned how skillshot/break the targets actually works this time for sure instead of me being a complete idiot with points. HEDLOK STILL FUCKING HARD. SO MANY TIME OUTS. I keep fishing for stun and even then every missed punch is pushing you 10 feet closer to losing.

Also some some hedlok Barq and hedlok Kid Cobra. Neat.

Fighting games aren't that deep tbh

huh

Well, first game with the pro controller, didn't do as well as last night but if you ask me, the competition was even fiercer than at 2am lol...

Fireball won too often in 1v1 against me, I only won once against him but luckily all matches were rather close(into the ~30% hp area). It was mostly a win for whom landed a good Rush attack...

The last Hedlock fight was my ONLY win against him this round however, feels horrible, and it was always so close, they should nerf his HP if you don't have fighters with insane powerful heavy arms:
DBZhdWJVoAAyGUR.jpg:large

two dudes at 90 and 80 disconnected on that screenshot already...

Just a waste of time, I lost 4 or 5 hedlock fights in a similar fashion today:

They should calculate each members HP and divide it by three and compare it to hedlock to determine who has won, not "if hedlock stands you lose" this is total BS.

Man, talk about whiplash. In one match a Twintelle scores a perfect on me as Mechanica, and in the very next match I score a perfect on a Felix as the same Mechanica.

I need to get better about pulling my punches. I consciously know I shouldn't throw both out there so much but I instinctively end up doing it too much.

I prefer V-ball to Hoops, only because I'm better at it.

I did get a throw in Hoops from all the way in the corner. Too bad it didn't give more than 3 points.

I can't believe the shenanigans that ensue in this game when 3 or 4 people are all spamming grabs, and you are able to grab someone while they are in the middle of their grab attack. You could basically have a daisy chain of reversals going on infinitely?

I like how the CPU boss fight answers all questions of "do I suck or are they really good? Am I awesome or do they suck?". A group of competent players wreck that thing, and the weak links get clobbered, forcing down the DPS to be unwinnable.

People need to stop sleeping on Mechanica.

One highlight was during hoops where we stalemated right at the end literally throwing punch grabs in perfect sync so they bounced off each other. They obviously didn't mind as they were leading by two points so it would be their victory, until, with just one second on the clock, I jumped up and, thus breaking the sync, managed to grab them. The clock hits 0, but the animation has started and I throw them in the basket. Three points awarded to me after the match is over and victory is mine.

That's what you get for calling yourself Naruto and playing as the ninja character.

Just a waste of time:

I don't think so. Electric arms is the best since it usually disables the majority of its arms. If I were you, I'd stay away and support with charged zapper punch, so the other the guys can wail on him. That's what I do with Minmin anyway.

No, it's okay. They can keep sleeping on her. Mechanica ALWAYS gives me so much trouble, a lot more than any of the other characters. It wasn't until I figured out that I had to charge my bird arm to actually electrocute the opponent that I was finally able to get some hits on her, but even then one mistake in her favour and I was bombarded with a rage of fury.

People are so defenseless against Mechanica haha

Her standard arm with the triple bullets seem to be too much. I went in without my son and got to 45 coin in 30 minutes with Mechanica

If anyone in here is Thèo that played with Helix....I'm sorry😂 Game kept putting he and I in matches and I was flooring him.

What hedlocks highest level? I beat on a lvl 5 that presented no challenge.

Also playing in handheld mode is my favorite play style now. Even over Pro controller.

This was by far the easiest headlock fight, it's amazing how much of a difference 3 competent players makes.

I wish I was better at Master Mummy because I love his design.

Helix is kind of addictive. I'm starting to get his movement and trollineess down- I totally froze a Twintelle in place by not throwing any punches for the first 15 seconds or so, just ducking and weaving. But I so dislike his ARMS options; I can kind of make blorbs work, but there were multiple situations where I outread my opponent but couldn't get the blorb to curve to connect.

Mummy- not my style. Ninjara- I get the hype I guess; I was wiping noobs by baiting grabs and teleporting. But is it really a port, or just an invisible dash? Feels like it won't work against good opponents.

For my main, it's down to Helix vs. Ribbon Girl vs. Mechanica (plus Byte/Barq & Kid Cobra). Wish I could time Spring Man's counter.

Alright, that's a wrap!

Managed to play for a full hour this time, making my total playtime so far 1 hour and 20 minutes or so. Managed to get a few wins in each mode, including against surprise addition Hedlock (who more often than not kicked our team's ass mind you), making my point total 59.

The game is growing on me, I have to say. The characters and overall atmosphere of the game continue to impress and charm me and only now did I get a chance to actually experience some of the game's more tactical layers such as heavier arms going through lighter ones, charging shots, etc.

That said, the motion controls still don't feel fully responsive / natural to me (granted, that might in part be due to my yet to replaced left joycon, though it never acted up as bad here as during Zelda). Movement still requires me to consciously rewire my (analogue stick focused) brain so to speak in order to not forget that the way in which I'm holding my hands is actually always making my fighter move. Dashing and jumping are also things I keep forgetting to use effectively, which is a shame as many of the fighters' unique characteristics seem to be tied to them. Blocking also gave me quite a bit of trouble because of the actual motion required, but I think I'm slowly getting the hang of that.

I think I might buy it though, just like with other competitive games like Splatoon and Street Fighter IV/V, I remain somewhat unsure if online battling is something I will ever prefer above the more relaxed and controlled experience of playing solo (in part because of the stress involved of always needing to do your best and try to win, which I'm not always in the mood for). In this game specifically I remain unsure as to whether the offline solo options will be enticing enough long term. Grand Prix sounds nice but unless I'm mistaken, it doesn't seem to be a full story / arcade mode where the backstory of each character is explained as you battle your way towards the boss, along with in-fight fake commentary by Biff or something.

Overall I'm far more into this game now than I was from mostly just watching it though, which proves the worth of these testpunches.

Yeah went in with two Sparkies the other matches but only two arms of his were disabled still enough left to block everyones punches, slapamander deals a bit more damage I feel like and the burn effect should also do something, though I still have no clue what xD

I might try to focus on learning Helix this afternoon, since nobody really talks about him that much. Any tips and suggestions and ARM combinations?

I suppose the same goes for Mechanica since I don't really understand her either.

Master Mummy seems a bit underpowered. When ever I fought one, they were so sluggish that I could just dance around them with jump+dash and throw them time after time.

Headlok is so fun to fight, even when losing to him I feel it was great. Had no problem beating him at level 4, but level 5 my other two teammates could not keep up and died every time leaving me to 1v1 him, almost did it every time and could've if the timer was just a few seconds longer.
One loss was completely my fault when I was trying to build up my meter for a rush and right as I was about to get it so me and the other dude still alive could finish him headlok just instantly turns to me and sends his giant energy ball at me faster than I could react and KO'd me right before I could rush him, and then the timer ran out before the last dude could try anything.

Can anyone tell me whats going on when a player tries to grab you, on your screen it whiffs by like 2-3 feet and goes past you, but you still go into the grab animation?

You mean Spring Man since Mechanica had the highest win rate last test punch.

Spring Man's counter counters everything, including dragon lasers.

This and the parry is soooooo good. The only sucky thing about it is that if you parry forward into someone's punch, you will eat it instead of getting temporary I frames. But I love when you time it right and parry forward, because with correct usage you can get close enough to punish with whatever you want and they can't do anything about it because their arms haven't come back yet. I wonder if we'll get an EVO moment 37 type maneuver?

Missed the last weekend's rounds due to being elsewhere until the final, and for that I didn't get the Internet working on the game despite it working otherwise just fine on the system. But now got more time and tried the Google DSN thing and that one worked.

Anyway, pretty convinced about the game. Will definitely get it.

Wasn't quite convinced by the motion controls though. They do feel accurate but it's just so easy to flail around with them. Would probably just need more time though (and there's not much time for now with these test punches obviously).

The leader in our group was playing master mummy, he packs a punch, even though I've won against him all the time as Ribbon Girl.

Try playing it like MOV did.

https://youtu.be/j2oF1J9EO8w?t=34m25s

I had some success with that last week, but this week people are just a bit too agile to be consistent with it.

I really like gaurdian, if you are playing with people unfamiliar with the arm, charge it shoot it out to make them think all it does is block attacks, then when they forget about it attack with it while its stationed, makes some players really paranoid.

I hope in the final game there's a Hedlok with 4 arms for some sweet local 2p co-op action.

I would imagine that he can go beyond level 6 in the final game. In the Testpunch he seems to range from 4 to 6. At level 4 he only has 4 arms, at level 5 he has 6.
