ARMS Global Testpunch Thread: Let's see if this has LEGS

It's super fun playing as Ribbon Girl and jumping around the place. Min Min is great too.

The total lack of error messages or any lag when for me impressed me a lot. Especially since I was playing on wifi.

Kind of hope the real game teaches you more of the mechanics and counter play.

Not a huge fan of party mode so also looking forward to 1 vs 1 more

There was a help section in the main menu, it explained a lot of things, like charge moves and insta counters

Pretty sure a guy in my 3 for all match came back to life and killed me and the other guy while we were fighting after he died. I still don't know how to change target, but I saw him go down and then I was focused on the other guy. Then after sparring for a bit, we're both supered from behind my back and killed.

Overall, glad I preordered, but I'm really hoping for more advanced tutorials...for instance, I played the whole hour and have no idea how to change my target.

Use the right stick.

motion controls worked just fine once you realize not everything is going to react instantly unless your last attack's cooldown was back. also... when you hold them the right way
i held them wrong/regular ways instead of sideways for the tutorial and was so freakin confused as to why the motion controls were shitty... so yeah, try that if you're having trouble, maybe you're as dumb as I was

Had a ton of fun using the thumps up grip, although I had a spot of trouble with aiming a few times. The one thing I didn't quite master is getting any of my curved punches to connect.

My thoughts exactly.
I seemed to miss randomly sometimes, will try the normal controls next round to see if it improves. Curving was just really weird and looked like it varied between arms.

Pretty fun game, I must admit! But my main concern still stands as strong as ever - it simply doesn't have the legs for a $60 title, especially when you consider after this fall we will be paying extra for the online features that serve as its core. Maybe once it has some of those free updates in its belt.

Also volleyball is just kinda awful and I wish I didn't have to play it lol

My takeaway thoughts on this:

1. I didn't play with standard controls, but motion controls worked well. It was definitely a case of you having to be deliberate with your moves and the game punishing you if you weren't. For instance things like throws and blocks work VERY consistently, but only if you make the motions. Slowly moving them in won't activate them. I find this, along with clicking to block, is done to prevent spamming of these things.

2. 1v1 > 2v2 > 1v1v1v1 >>>>> 1v1v1. Just you and a single opponent works really well. I think 2v2 has potential, but they need to allow a longer leash or something. Not to mention they need to color code your teammate because it's very easy to accidentally hit them. 3 player FFA is just a clusterfuck to be honest. Even when I got the hang of switching targets, your only indication is where your character is looking. They need an arrow or something to make it clearer

3. I knew I'd like volleyball, however, if you choose the dragon as one of your arms for this mode you're practically telling your opponent to destroy you

4. I still need to get the hang of curving punches. I just could not do them consistently at all. I think I also have a tendency to associate my left side with movement, so I found I was throwing waaaaay more right hand punches than left hand.

Overall, I really enjoyed it

got lots of connection error, but I feel this come from my side and not the server, otherwise smooth game.

I am an absolute idiot in this game for now, but it is a blast, I can see it becoming very challenging when people gain more experience.

Not sure how to play with the motion control which forced me to use regular control, which are good, but I usually really like motion controls, I guess I will get it another shot tommorrow.

Also like that you can change character and weapons quickly before the match, unlike splatoon.

Also, what does it mean when on the server "map" you see two characters linked together, one smaller than the other, are those groups of 2 players?

I did try it with the Pro Controller, but I didn't feel like I was as accurate. I guess it's all my Virtual On playing when I was younger.

Ahhh yeah right, those controllers! xD

Anyway, am I the only one who had problem grabbing (ZL+ZR on the pro controller)? Sometimes, for exemple on matches 1v1v1, there were the 2 ennemies fighting against each other, and I tried to take advantage of that situation to grab them but sometimes my arms CLEARLY went through their bodies without grabbing them (I'm sure I was locked on the ennemy I was trying to grab), and it happened a lot lot...

Did I miss something? Was it lag? I'm not good at VS fighting games so I dunno.

At first it doesnt click with me with motion control, but when i tried with traditional controls, i had more fun, will defenitely try the next test with normal control

I mained Master Mummy the whole way and ended up at the top of my lobby with 94 or 91 coins. I did motion controls for the whole run and had a blast. I haven't decided if I'll pick up this game, but for tonight it was a really fun hour.

Also how do you change opponent in 3vs3?

Thats the only thing I was missing, even if I won most of the fights. Hated that there was always a guy waiting in the sidelines for you to finish against the other, but it was so satisfying killing him with only a sliver of life while he had a lot.

Also had 2 perfects in 1vs1. Motion controls work really well when you know what you are doing.

The only thing I hate about 2v2 is how if your partner gets grabbed you get tossed as well. I get why I need to be tethered but don't knock me down alongside him damn it, it's bad enough having friendly fire

Overall it's really fun and it's analogous to Splatoon in its relation to the respective genres. Will this game have post launch support?

FYI you can lock on to different people in 3+ player matches by pressing the face buttons on the right joycon. Sounds like a lot of people don't know that and I figured it out by accident.

I feel like this is shallow and should have been a pack in game.

Lmao, c'mon now

----

Game is great, legit fun. Had some fair trouble figuring out the motion controls, namely moving around, but that's on me since I didn't pay full attention to the controls, and was too lazy to look them up.

The Joycon Grip and Handheld mode are awesome though. Definitely picking this up.

Overall it's really fun and it's analogous to Splatoon in its relation to the respective genres. Will this game have post launch support?

Yup, free characters, stages, and ARMS.

At first I was getting my ass kicked until I realized I was holding the joycons wrong, you're supposed to hold them with the trigger buttons facing you, I was doing immensenly well and the motion controls clicked after that!

Were you holding the joy-cons correctly? Both analog sticks should be facing each other. If you are, you just move by tilting the joycons in the direction you want to move.

I'm such an idiot. I was holding them like I would if I were playing a normal Switch game with the Joy-Cons by themselves. Ugh.

I guess there's always next time!

I hate Volleyball and Motion Controls.

But aside that the game seems really fun. Tried all characters, but stuck with MinMin with 2 fire rings. Also my favourite modes were 1v1 and 2v2.

I got disconnected in a match once and my number reset. Still made it back up to 75 by the end. Man I can't believe we are getting this than Splatoon a month later. Nintendo is killing it.

I played ribbon girl the whole time in handheld mode cause I walked in the door from work. Downloaded and grabbed a beer. Tomorrow I'll try out other characters with motion controls. Man I want to keep playing

Pretty damn fun, played exclusively with motion controls and they clicked with me pretty well, though I don't think I've gotten the tilt aiming down.

My biggest problem with this game is the camera. It's REALLY hard to move it so you can actually aim punches, at least that's what I felt.

My second biggest problem is a personal one - I've been taking Karate lessons most of my life, and you're always taught to punch with your fist oriented horizontally. As a result, it feels REALLY weird to punch regularly vertically, and in the heat of the moment I ALWAYS end up curving punches I don't want to. I'll try handheld mode next round, but I'm definitely not sold as of yet.

Impressions:

- DNA Man was fun to use (in fact he was the only one I used besides Spring Man in the tutorial), every lanky character Nintendo has created has been the best thing in their franchises.

- I didn't enjoy 3 player free for alls until I learned using the dpad or face buttons changes target, afterwards it was better, though still kind of annoying when you get ganged up on

- The other fighting modes were alright, they're your basic FFA or 1v1 so I got nothing to say

- Volleyball was interesting (I wonder if I can use DNA Man's crouch to hit the person on the other side)

- Lobby system was great with how all the modes were shuffled, giving you better variety rather than be stuck on a single mode like with Splatoon 1 & 2's Global Testfire, there's a practice range you can use to mess around in the meantime, even if you only have 5-10 seconds to tinker around in, it's much better than staring at a blank screen, and you can change setups like in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, so you're not forced to leave rooms if you want to switch to another character like Min Min.

Overall, DNA Man is in the game, so it's good

I'm really impressed with the netcode. I played all the way from Brazil, and it was smooth riding all the way through. Felt like local play, hats off to Nintendo.

Toom a while, but once the game started clicking....oh man. That I got that first perfect and it was clear I generally knew what I was doing at that point it became so satiafying. Multiman matches kinda suck though. Too hectic. Also volleyball feels so luck based.

And I don't care what anyone says. Button controls are waaaaaaaaay better than motion controls for this game. Like, it's not even close.

Love it. I really like the lobby system. Pro controller definitely seems the way to go if you want to be competitive but the motion controls are a lot of fun. I see myself playing with the joy-cons for local play and pro controller when going online.

I got up to 101 points before the connection dropped. The gameplay came totally naturally to me and I got a 34 game win streak, so I'd imagine my expirience would be much better with skill based match making that i'm assuming will be in the final game.

I had so much fun with it but I am still on the fence about it though. Not sure if it could hold my attention long term.

Wow, i just realized there is a button to change target. I was about to complain about how annoying it was that I couldn't change targets. haha

I got one really good match where it was a three way and after me and this other guy defeated Spring Man (we were both the ninja) we focused on each other. I had a sliver of health and he had half a bar. I was dodging and blocking like crazy and getting a few hits in. I'd stay blocked until he made his move, then grabbed him and slammed him down. Got my special meter up and finished him just as he was unleashing his special meter too. It was a real nail-biter. Great fun.

That was pretty good. Resolution takes a massive hit in handheld, that doesn't look 720 at all.

1v1 and volleyball were the only modes i enjoyed. 2v2 is too chaotic, and 1v1v1 is just dumb, with how the targeting works. Ironically, I have the exact same complaints about For Honor for the exact same reasons.

But 1v1 is something special, I could play that for a good long while.

First Impressions: The main menu theme is fabulous.

Second Impressions: Hey, the game is fun! No lag once I started connecting to matches, but it's a small sample size. I can already tell motion controls will make the game tougher as certain gestures are really easy to mess up, but I think I'll stick with them for the fun factor.

I dunno if I'll get as into it as I did with Splatoon, but I can see myself putting a few dozen hours into it at least, easy. Maybe more if I actually get gud. Splatoon was easier for me to pickup, and it's motion controls were pretty much foolproof.

I feel bad for my teammate in my first 2v2. Didn't realize there was friendly fire until he died. I did survive the match and knock out one of our opponents, though we lost in the end.

As for the people saying it's just a party game, any fighting game can look like a mindless button masher when the players involved don't know what they're doing. I'm sure the skill disparity in the community will become apparent after a short while.

Testpunch did it's job, went from cautiously optimistic to excited.

Ended up with 65. I was actually doing so well at the beginning, winning so well in 30 minutes. Then all of a sudden some expert folks just arrived at the lobby and can't win a single game after lol.

It made me sweat lol. At least some good old arm exercise for once.

I'm such an idiot. I was holding them like I would if I were playing a normal Switch game with the Joy-Cons by themselves. Ugh.

I guess there's always next time!

Don't feel bad, I did the same thing during my entire first match lol

So yeah, to anyone playing with motion who couldn't figure out how to move....you were holding the joy cons incorrectly.

Did entire thing with motion controls, gonna try a session tomorrow with the pro controller.

Once you get more comfortable with movement using motion this is so much fun, good exercise too. Nothing but Mechanica, she's so much fun to use and her super armor means I don't have to think too much about defense and more on using my ARMS. Revolver w/ Hammer is amazing and 1v1v1 AKA 2vMe is horrendous, v-ball is waaaaaay too short and dull, Ninjara players are really easy to bait. Finishing a round with Mechanica's throw feels soooooo good!

I had a great transition of "I have no idea what I'm doing" to "FOOL! I knew you were going to dash there! Eat 5 tons of Hammer! /Usopp" by the last 10 minutes. I was actually really worried going in but I am so sold.
