I had a comeback and beat a pretty good Ninjara 1v1 using Helix. Next game was 1v1v1 with him included and he just went after me all the time. :(

I played both on Pro Controller and Motion, and Pro is infinitely better. I can see people getting used to Motion, but my motions kept registering as something else (punching when I wanted to move, etc).

The connection was surprisingly great. Never had a single disconnect for the entire test punch. This is at least better than the test fire lol. Probably because it's just North America today.

It's not just North America. I was playing from the UK fine.

Fucking loved it, played the full hour exclusively with motion controls. Punches are super responsive and in general everything works really accurately. This finally feels like a motion control game where I'm not fighting with the controls.

The movement takes some getting used to, but once you start utilizing the dash and dashing in midair it really starts to come together.

Not sold on V-ball (physics felt off for me, the ball just doesn't move as much as you would expect) or the FFA stuff (too chaotic, gangbanging problems too) but 2v2 and 1v1 were fantastic.

Roll on the next session!

EDIT: Playing in the UK, not a single network error, disconnect or instance of lag. Also shout out to the lobby system, like others have said it's fucking great, so quick to get into a match.

Really interesting game, but if they don't give me the possibility to block with something else than the stick button when i'm playing with a pad, it's a no-buy.

Agree. They should map guard to L since it's not being used for anything. And it's kinda dumb to push in L3 to guard when it's almost always being tilted to one direction.

I don't know how I feel about it. The motion controls are fun the traditional controls seem more accurate... In the sense that I know if I throw a curve punch it's actually a curve punch. Motion controls it's like I'm not sure if straight punch is registered as curve punch instead.

Movement is pretty rough to be honest, but it's something that can be mastered eventually.

1v1 was great. The other modes not do much, volleyball became okay I guess. I don't know what else to say the game looked good on my 4k tv.

For $80 idk. It's fun but I don't like it that much

The other guy said 90 dollars. Where do you guys live because in the US it is 60 dollars? If it was 90 dollars in the US, I definitely would not pick it up. It was fun but for me, I would consider it for $40 or less.

In the little time I played it, I stuck mostly to the traditional controls. I couldn't really get the hang of moving in the motion controls--kept doing grabs when I tried going toward.

So did anyone else hold the Joycons wrong for their first match? I had them face each other in a Joycons grip-esque way rather than holding them in my fists. It was truly magical

For volleyball, throw sets the ball and the next hit spikes. So you can see them going to use a throw and just set a punch out there to spike it immediately, or followup a teammate.

1v1v1 is weird though since it seemed like a lot of people didn't know how to switch targets so people were getting ganged up on a lot.

it's fun until you get someone your team that chooses the laser dragon thing that never hits the ball lol

I actually had some of my best V-ball matches using Helix with the ice dragon, since you can get the laser to just go right through the net you can use that with his upward stretch to make for some nice easy spikes.

That was a fun hour! I wish I was better with Master Mummy but of course I knew I wouldn't be super-great with any character in just an hour. Really most of the characters were enjoyable to play in different ways, some playstyles definitely gel better personally than others.

I repost my question since this thread is going sooo fast and I'd really like to have an answer. :D

Am I the only one who had problem grabbing (ZL+ZR on the pro controller)? Sometimes, for exemple on matches 1v1v1, there were the 2 ennemies fighting against each other, and I tried to take advantage of that situation to grab them but sometimes my arms CLEARLY went through their bodies without grabbing them (I'm sure I was locked on the ennemy I was trying to grab), and it happened a lot lot...

Did I miss something? Was it lag? I'm not good at VS fighting games so I dunno.

The good thing about this test is that I can rest easy knowing the game without motion controls is perfect. Seriously it's on par with anyone who plays with motion controls. There was no compromises made. I'm pretty sure I beat a lot of motion control users.

Yeah that definitely did not feel as good as I had hoped. I'm probably not going to get it at this point.

Really disappointed.

Maybe I should try without motion controls next time.

I probably won/lost half of my matches with motion controls (I guess I'm better at V-Ball), but the connection was perfect. No issues whatsoever.

I'll try button controls next time and see if I can do better that way.

Can motion controls even switch between targets in free for all? Cuz I sure didn't figure out how...

Press any of the "D-Pad" or face buttons to change targets. I was involuntarily hitting them as my hand tensed so I was bounced back and forth like crazy. Really obnoxious.

Definitely need to arc punches. It's the only way to get use out of the bigger ARMS and I wish we could've stayed in the training mode.

I didn't have any lag or disconnect issues. Using 5G wi-fi, DMZ the Switch, and it's pretty close to my router. Now if only Smash would be that kind...

didnt have any lag at all either, played the entire hour

Same here. Was buttery smooth the whole time.

I'm glad others were having fun. Spent the first 30 minutes getting my ass kicked. Ended up with over 50 points, but if I was on your team, odds were you were going to lose. Ha, ha! Gotta get better at the strategy of it all. Had no problems with the motion controls and walked away thinking I could actually have a lot of fun with the game.

What was the change target button? I couldn't figure out how to change and it was driving me crazy in vs 3 matches.

Guard's not the issue, it's dodge and jump being stuck on face buttons.

They need to trade places with the special buttons.
I personally didn't have any disconnects but I saw like 4 or 5 during matches. Also there was one time where I grabbed and threw someone, but the game warped him behind me as though I didn't grab him at all.
Are you sure they were disconnects and not just players that were kod in multi?

Damn, kicked out at 99 points.

The first ten minutes, similar to recently playing For Honor, felt really strange and just overwhelming at times. But like For Honor, when it clicks damn did it feel good.

I'm completely sold. This is the motion fighting game I've been dreaming of since the Wii was introduced. By the end of the Testpunch, each match of ARMs felt fresh, new, and much more intimate than your average fighting game. Each hit is satisfying and earned. Every 1v1 was intense and engaging. My only complaint was the volleyball mode which was a fun diversion at best, but brought down the greatness that was 1v1 and even 1v1v1 (For those that didn't know, the 'a' button switched your lock on).

Bring on round two!

Edit: I was ColinGT, played mostly as Min Min but was able to play a few rounds with each character. Spring Man was by far my least favorite.

Yeah, I was glad to see I could curve and everything.

Left stick to guard wasn't a huge deal since you can't move but I still hope there's an option to move it to L, it's a clunky input in the heat of the moment.

I love Nintendo and I'm in love with ARMS... but I've played 45 minutes with motion controller and hated.

Then I've used the joycon grip and wow, the game is fast, responsive and amazing. I'm now excited to test the Pro Controller at the next Testpunch. ;-)

Idk about this game. Motion controls just aren't responsive enough for me to feel like I could ever be comptetive or for the game to truly feel fair.

I definitely was much better by the end of the hour, but again, motion controls will never top buttons and thumbsticks. My biggest gripe is that you have to slant your Joy-Cons one way or another to move left and right, but you also have to slant each Joy-Con in the direction you want to curve your punches. I didn't feel like I could accurately move and curve punches in the directions I wanted at the same time.

I will say that in my playtime, there wasn't any discernible lag. The hits that my opponents and I made on each other felt right. There were a few player disconnects, but it was always the other player.

I might try it out again during the Global Testpunch, but I doubt I will buy it. I guess I'll try out the Pro Controller next time.

Totally. I'd argue it's an advantage to NOT use them, but not really sure yet. I enjoyed Pro Controller more for sure though.

Min Min's big arm seems like it really had awful hit boxes. People kept jumping over it and I keep thinking it would hit but it doesn't.

If a poster says a game is $80 or $90 or any other denomination above $60, you can safely assume they're in another country. Canada, for example, currently has games priced quite a bit higher than they are in the US. GAF has members from all over the globe.

I thought the motion controls were very fun to use, and I had no problem with them for the training or warm up stages. But against other people I may as well have been playing blind.

Happened to me too. Sometimes I would grab when they get up but it would go through them and they'd just grab me right after. I'm thinking there are small invincibility frames during which you can't be grabbed, and this is what's happening when you try to grab someone who's fighting someone else.

Got destroyed multiple times, how the heck do you counter grabs?

One handed punch > grab

You can also jump and dash out of the way then counter them during their grab animation

Grabbing against a grab neutralizes it

Did you try regular controls?
