ARMS Global Testpunch Thread: Let's see if this has LEGS

Also the ppl complaining that the controls are wacky. Remember you played an hour demo with a new control scheme. Fighting games takes practice and time to master everything lol this isn't Pikmin or Zelda guys

Min Min's big arm seems like it really had awful hit boxes. People kept jumping over it and I keep thinking it would hit but it doesn't.

I was having trouble hitting with the Homie. Thing doesn't do a very good job of homing...

What ARM did you use with it? I would think the MegaBolt on it would be a good one since it is already huge and the dragon arm would make it bigger. so it can eat through attacks. I was having trouble with the Hammer until I started working my way closer to them before throwing it.

I would imagine kicking a punch away and then throwing a MegaBolt while their arm retracts would be effective, but I didn't touch Min Min so I don't know the cool down.

Edit: Oh, I thought "big arm" meant her left arm effect. My bad. I don't know how effective the ring is at making people respond but I think the key to the heavy ARMS is to get in close to pressure them and predict where they're going to run. If you're closer, they'll naturally want to run to open area so you'd arc the heavy ARM that way and trust the huge size to cover their dash range.

after reading the last few pages I really wonder how many people that 'hated' the motion controls or thought they sucked, were actually holding the controllers wrong. because it seems like i was far from the only one

Happened to me too. Sometimes I would grab when they get up but it would go through them and they'd just grab me right after. I'm thinking there are small invincibility frames during which you can't be grabbed, and this is what's happening when you try to grab someone who's fighting someone else.

Mmh I see. Yeah it must be that. But sometimes they were just moving normally and 3 times in a row I couldn't grab, maybe yes he got punched and the frame after he was invincible, yes.

Also when I had "the big blue electric ball arm" of Min Min, even on 1v1 I REALLY, and this time I'm 100% sure of it, went absolutly THROUGH the ennemy quite a few times... I mean, like in the middle of their chest.

Did anyone play with the joycons with the strap off and on? I'm starting to wonder if my issue with switching players had to do with the strap on. My fingers would be right over the button the strap off compared to with it on where it feels I have to reach my finger in a slightly awkward way.

Played almost exclusively as Ribbon Girl and with motion controls. Only lost 5 or so times in the whole hour+. Had one disconnect during the game. Was disappointed I got disconnected right as my first 2v2 volleyball game was going to start.

1v1v1(v1) needs a ruleset change... maybe give everyone a target and whoever defeats their target first wins. These free-for-all modes and the team modes need a longer timer... I think the rounds ended more due to time than due to victory.

For people playing with guests, the match making logic needs to do better. It seemed like it was possible for one of the two players to get sidelined and the other placed into a 1v1 match (heck I saw a 1v1v1 match with one guest sidelined too). It really should only put them in 3 player+ match types.

Really impressed how fast paced getting between matches is. Occasionally there is a bit of a wait while another match finishes up but otherwise its one of the smoothest matchmaking systems I've seen.

Slapamander is the best!

I only tried motion controls, are traditional controls alright?

They're functional but kind of boring

I know it's only an hour playtest but I think I played enough of this for a lifetime. It's fine, but not very interesting at all. I wasn't big on it before and this just confirmed my feelings vs changing anything

2v2 online fights with my wife as local co op teammate was really fun though

Ok, that was fun. Managed to get 93 credits in the time played. The game plays fine and all, but honestly the gameplay doesn't feel that engaging to me. I got the feeling it might get stale fast, tho I guess I'll know for sure once all the testpunches are over.

(V-Ball absolutely sucks tho, what a boring waste of time)

The other guy said 90 dollars. Where do you guys live because in the US it is 60 dollars? If it was 90 dollars in the US, I definitely would not pick it up. It was fun but for me, I would consider it for $40 or less.
Yeah in Canada it's 80+tax so yeah about 90. Amazon Prime drops it to 74 but ehh. I agree $40 would be sweet.

Disregarded the motion controls and went straight to controller. Didn't lose a match as min min.

I wonder how long the shelf life will be since it doesn't seem that deep aside from movement options.

I think the game is incredibly deep if you're playing against someone who's actually good. I watch the two best players in my lobby who fought each other to a draw. It was awesome as hell. Heh, they took me out early, so I was able to watch the rest of the match and damn, those guys were awesome. I don't think I'll ever get that good, but I can see watching great players duke it out being the stuff of legends.

Ribbon Girl

Double jump is nice. Essentially, you get one air dash with each jump, so you can really randomize your movement and make yourself hard to hit. Also, she gets an auto-charge after landing from a double-jump, though I didn't take advantage of this a lot.

All in all, I really like the game. It's fairly easy to pickup and the mind games are fun.
You can jump more than 2 times with her, in fact she can jump until she touches the floor.

Everytime the ball (in volleyball) touched the ground at the opponents court (and exploded) he got a point. What did I do wrong? Pretty sure it wasn't outside of the opponents court.
Also my character got hurt each time it happened.

Go read the tips and tricks section and the characters section and come back. I didn't have any idea you could do half the stuff written there. The number of strategy combinations is immense.

I'm in the next room over, its not like I'm on the moon or in my deep sea base. All my other devices never had any problems, I'm just aghast at the Switch's wifi.

Does any Lan Adapter work or is the official one the best bet?

im pretty sure most lan adapters work i bought a cheap one off amazon for $15 for my wii u along time ago and i just moved it to my switch and it worked fine but you can get the hori lan adapter off amazon for $25 if you want one thats licenesed by nintendo.

And just before the ending!!!

Mechanica is underrated and I think she's really good in doubles.

Game is actually really good! I won't be playing much tomorrow but I'll definitely try and get back in on Sunday.

Underrated? She is such an amazing character thanks to hovering in the air while she dashes.
And she wrecks at volleyball!

That was dope as hell. Stayed in the same lobby from beginning to end. The party lobby is an awesome idea and I love how immediate the warm-up is. Had no problems with the motion controls. I'll stick with them unless I'm playing in portable. I dominated for the first 30 minutes but I feel like people started catching on after a while and I lost several. Enjoyed 1v1v1 more than 2-on-2. You've got to be quick with the target change.

Can't wait to stack them fucking coins and blow them in the ARMS Getter.

Hot Takes

1) They need a better on boarding process. Didn't explain enough of the game nuances.

2) 1v1 was pretty fun. There definitely is a lot of prematch wep picking strategy

3) 2v2 was also fun, but it was impossible to coordinate with your partner on picks

4) Free for all 4P was wacky, but it was no Powerstone or Smash.

5) 3P FFA was wack as fuck sometimes

6) VBall was garbage tier and honestly felt to ME like I was wasting my time

7) Like the stages, but the base arena felt bland compared to the other two.

8) Connect was stable and pretty much lag free

9) Grab felt a little too OP sometimes as did heavy characters

10) Wish the stages were more like DOA with distruction and changing stages

11) I played exclusively in handheld mode

12) 1v1 and 2v2 while fun I'm not quiet sure they were go spend $60 fun.

13) Stone steps stage just had me going can I get a SP game with these graphics and art style

14) I think this game is gonna under perform as it doesn't feel like it has wide audience gameplay appeal.

15) Also feels like it could get stale faster than your Kart, Splat, Smash ect...

16) Feels like a game that could potentially be more fun in the long run with local MP vs Online

Just done playing. So many Min Mins...
And I was proud to be one of them. Stuck with my girl Min Min for the entire hour.

That was actually pretty fun.
Just played in handheld mode and things worked out good enough.
Already know i'll have to practice more though to be good. won a lot of early matches but lost quite a few matches after that.

No disconnects at all for me here
saw only.... i believe two players dropping out?

only problem i had was focusing on different opponents in 1 vs 1 vs 1 battles and forgetting the controls sometimes

This is gonna be a hit. I can feel it.

I noticed later on in the help section with hints that her and Master Mummy don't flinch when getting hit which is probably one advantage people had using them.

Mechanica's hammer is OP as fuck in group matches LOL. Really, the group matches in general are pretty much bullshit, they shouldn't ever be played seriously. Still tons of fun though.

I was one of the only Min Min's that I came across while playing. I was expecting her to be pretty popular, but it looks like Ninjara and Spring Man were the most used in my encounters.

I managed to score about 57 points in the 45ish minutes that I played. It was fun for a bit, but I was beginning to get bored after 30 minutes or so. I played exclusively with motion controls which I didn't find too bad, but reading some of the posts here, I should give the grip a shot. I haven't been too interested in the game and was glad to give it a shot, but overall, I think I'll be passing on it.

When playing as Min Min, I always used the chakram arm in one arm because the other two is pretty darn slow. The dragon arm is also pretty awful in close range because if it hits something on the way it just retracts and does nothing.

Mechanica with dual revolver arms needs a bit of a nerf? I dunno, saw a lot of players as her doing the same spam tactics. It's easy to counter with a really agile character, but easy to get caught in a loop with that.

I was on the fence for the game, but after this trial I'm in. Had a lot of fun, and liked Ribbon Girl most. A lot of people didn't seem to know what to do when I started chain jumping to stay airborne and I even made some people waste their Rush by jumping and dashing over all the attacks. Mechanica seems a little OP at the moment but from what I understand all the fighters can get arms of all types? If so that should really change the meta compared to the Testpunch.

I felt like the standard controls were severely lacking compared to the motion controls (for me anyway) but I'm sure one could get used to them.

I took the switch out of the dock to play in handheld, and I think this is the only game that has made me hear the switchs fan. Thing got pretty hot, anyone notice this?

I did the same, I think it's the hottest my Switch has ever been, but I didn't notice any problems.

any adapter works, just make sure it's USB 2.0 as the switch hasn't been updated to support 3.0 yet

I couldn't get the hang of any of the faster characters, they all lacked the punch and heavy arms that the bigger ones did. I definitely excelled with Mechanica!

I enjoyed the Thumbs Up controls a lot more than I thought. I switched to the portable controllers and it lacked the nuance of the curved punches but was more straight forward.

It's kinda funny how this is probably the one fighting game I've played where button mashing as a crutch dies down incredibly fast in terms of skill gap. Spamming an attack fails so much harder here than any other fighting game I can think of.

If anything the button mashing in this game has less to do with attacking and more to do with dodging. Dodging is way more easier to do than landing attacks.

Something really interesting I feel I need to think about when jumping into the next sessions.

I wish I knew about this lol, I was basically just playing by ear. Took me several V Ball matches to figure out grabs set up spikes on the ball lmao

I didn't try motion controls, are they better than controller? I felt like controller was fine, but I also did not feel like I knew what I was doing lol. Motion Controls seems like it would be a bit more fun, but I'm not sure if it would be better. Any opinions on this?

Played for 70 minutes, no disconnects, no lag, really quick into matches. The Lobby mode is fantastic and warm up mode while you wait is a great addition.

Started out a little rough for me. It took about 30 minutes for me to start reacting to other players (and fighting the urge to waggle more than I needed) and I started doing way better at that point.

Still haven't got the motion controls totally down yet, but it's fun. I'll have to try the pro controller during one of the other slots.

Wish the one on one matches in the demo were best 2 out of 3. Feels like you barely figure your opponent out and the match is over.

I owned at volleyball and didn't lose a match (had a draw in a team game, won the rest). Seemed like a good number of people didn't have a clue what the mode was or how the rules work.

I did the best with Ribbon Girl, Min Min, and Master Mummy.

Still have some trouble blocking, but I'm trying to do that while my arms are still somewhat extended I guess.

In the three player matches you gotta draw from wrestling triple threat match chickenshit heel logic, it worked wonders for me.

This. I was hiding behind the test tubes in Helix's stage while the other two fought. Then sucker punch/throw the person who had the most health at the right moment.

4-way and 2 v 2 are really frantic though. Glad they're in the game but it's too chaotic for a newbie to react to what's going on.

After seeing this, I don't think this will be the Splatoon sized hit, Nintendo is wanting. It could still be a good game. But I currently don't see this selling like Splatoon.

Played a couple of games, only in handheld mode but I didn't really like the controls. Maybe it's better in motion controls. I thought it was fun enough but not enough to hook me in.

Impressions are pretty good. I only got about 30 minutes so I didn't get super used to the controls yet and I mostly stuck with Spring Man. Definitely fun, although I do think 1v1v1 and 1v1v1v1 are a little too tricky, but that could be because for the first 3-4 matches I couldn't figure out how to switch targets.

My lobby ended up spamming the winky/happy faces between matches (Pressing L or R). So that was a thing.

Also, half my lobby was Min Min almost the entire time. I think I only saw Ninjara and Master Mummy pop up for a few matches each and basically saw no one else using Ribbon Girl.
