I'm interested in the PS3, especially after viewing the trailers for MGS4, FF13 and even Heavenly Sword. The potential of the machine has been improved by the gyroscopic controls, which I'm sure will be very cool (though different from the Wiimote).

The thing is, I have had problems with all of Sony's machines. Well, not so much the Walkman or their tvs, but the PlayStation brand stuff. I'm sure I'm not alone in this. And the problem is, they don't necessarily go bust straight out of the package. Sometimes it takes a year or two. But then it happens: it stops reading blue discs, or dvds, or both.

The $600 price tag is enough to make me think twice, but then the thought of it breaking down on me after the warranty is up...

Yeah early adopters are going to get fucked. I wonder what hardware problems the first batch will have :lol

Solution: Purchase an extended warrantee, then get a new PS3 when the warrantee is about to expire if you suspect yours will give you problems.

Are you trying to scare people?

12 month minimum warranty in australia. I'm much more likely to be fucked by the 360 then the PS3.

but if it breaks after 12 months, I guess I'll just have to replace the goddamn thing and curse Sony to hell and back. I'll be working, it's not like 600 bucks when you don't have income.

Yeah, my PS2 refuses to play DVD movies or PSX games anymore. Hell, it won't even play older a lot of older PS2 games likes Starfighter / Kessen (not a huge deal, but still).

Considering I can probably go get some cheap repairs or drop a benjamin for a new one if I had to, that's fine. But for $600, I'm concerned, which means getting the extended warranty, which isn't really all that extended, and zOMG the price tag is already so fucking high.

X-box seems solid, but X-Box 360 has apparently been screwing up a lot, but at least those were defective and it happened early, while still under warranty.

Nintendo's NES would crap out on you eventually, but everything since the SNES seems to work nearly for life. Given that, Wii at launch and PS3 waaaaaaaay down the line seems to be the way to go, or maybe a 360 if they can manage to make some PS3 "exclusives" become not so.

I wonder how expensive those'll be given the price of the machine. On top of that, should I not buy a launch title (or two) to pay for such a thing?

I think I'm at the point where, should any of the majors announce 360 ports, I will be a 360/Wii owner instead of what I assumed would be a ps3/Wii owner. I mean, if even one (either MGS4 or FFXIII) ends up on 360, whats the point of buying a PS3? I don't care much for HD movies.... maybe in another 10 years.

For that type of price, you should get the longest extended warranty you can find. At least in my part of the world, I can get up to three years easily...

$60 for 3 years at Best Buy for anything priced between $400-$600. I just bought a $500 digital camera from them, that's how I know.

Don't buy a launch system if it is a worry. If the PS3 has similar problems like the 360 had, which will happen wait a few months untill the problems are solved for the most part.

I take DAMN good care of my consoles, etc... Never had a problem with any except Sony's... honestly.
I had two PS1's, and two PS2's....
Fooled me once. Shame on you. Fooled me twice. Shame on me.
No way in hell will I buy a PS3 early.

At this price, I really hope this thing tanks in the first 6 months, forcing a major price drop.

1. How the fuck do you know that?
2. Yes we get a years warranty but sony will give you a refurbished model with a greater chance of fucking up (that’s what happened with my ps2)
3. Plus it will take 3 weeks for them to get it to you

Uhh...

Buy an extended warranty?
Seriously. At $600, you're looking at making a serious initial investment.

i got a service plan on my $650 Sony Clie. The screen whined early on and the battery life went to crap four months in. i called the service plan and ended up getting three replacements (i've actually still got the third and i'm tempted to sellit ). Each replacement had a new problem, so i ended up getting a gift card with $650. i was pissed at the time about the wait for each new unit, but it was better than having to buy another one.

i will look deeper into the conditions of each warranty before buying though. It wasn't until i politely complained to a manager about the ridiculous wait time on each call and the disappointment i had with each faulty unit that i got the gift card. CompUSA's warranties (aka TAPs) don't have a no-lemon policy, so i was pretty happy that things ended as well as they did.

I think it's worth mentioning my wife and I HAD the extended warranty from Best Buy on the damn thing, and it crapped out a few months after that.

i dont know worse case scenario you buy a new one 3 years down the line when the price has dropped significantly

I think I remember you, you were that Sony rep I got on the phone after my PS2 went bust right?
