It's really just those first few years of 3D gaming in the late 90s to early 00s. The graphics are pretty bad and the gameplay is not as fluid possibly due only to the shitty camera. For 2D, the Atari games are too simplistic for the most part.

That said, I played the greats from that era so its not like I missed anything. That adds to me not needing to go back. I replayed a lot of the older Zeldas but did not want to play the N64 ones. The great games of that era should be remade instead of remastering PS4 games.

Well, I replayed Tekken 2 the other day, and my god, my eyes hurt. I rolled a fat one, then resumed sometime later, and it improved slightly but overall, o had to turn it off through sheer disdain.

Well since I was born during the end of the 8 bit era, graphics and gameplay can be very primitive. As long as the artstyle is consistent and the gameplay engaging, that's enough for me. I'd place the limit around the third console generation (NES/Master System). Systems before this don't have enough capabilities to to bring these "complex" enough graphics and gameplay.

I won't deny what the Atari 2600 brought to the video game industry but it's too primitive for me, a child born at the end of the 80s.

Ps3/Xbox360 games aged well.

Mafia 1, for instance, has TERRIBLE game mechanics (for the genre at least), and since the story was the only interesting part, I'm not going to play it again.

Mafia 1's combat was great. You couldn't auto-pilot the combat, like you can in popamole games. You lost a lot of health when shot and the guns had a lot of kickback to them. You can also get stun-locked from a shotgun blast, which meant you were as good as dead and a single shotgun blast from close range usually just killed you right then and there. Same thing with tommy gun bursts.

Every story-related combat encounter in Mafia 1 was intense and memorable. The encounters were usually set up incredibly well, and combat was lethal so you had to pay attention. In the fourth mission you were fighting a handful of guys at a shitty motel, and it felt great when you managed to pull it off. In the newshit you're gunning down policemen by the dozen, and it barely registers with you because the cover system is basically doing the fighting for you. Just pop those moles at your leisure and proceed to watch the next cutscene.

And the new popamole combat wouldn't even work with the more lower-stakes, more realistic shootouts of the original game, so now there's a bunch of inane shit in every other mission, like instead of a mere gang there's now an army of tommygun wielding punks. Levels have been changed to be more action-packed and ludicrous which is mostly to the detriment of the game.

I swear when I come to places like here, reddit, etc..it's like stepping into an alternate universe. Probably somewhat of a generational thing.

I was talking more about the driving rather than the shooting. The action parts were kind of ok I guess, even tho I found some missions kind of exaggerated (no spoiler for who didn't play it, but the further you go in the story the more "one against army" type of missions appear). Then, the lack of bullets fall-off made most missions in "open field" an annoying quest on understand who and from when they are shooting you, since that enemies can snipe you with ANY weapon (maybe excluding the sawed-off shotgun).

The driving was just not fun. Ok, I get that it was supposed to "simulate old cars" and stuff, but why not making the CPU as the same level as you with the cars? You took AGES to get the car going, but the CPU is full speed in one second. Also escaping the enemies at high speeds, when only ONE little turn made wrong would send you car flying, is damn frustrating (the race at the beginning of the game sums it up why I hate the driving by the way).
Then the cops. Bruh, why putting the speed control ALWAYS at 40? I liked the fact that cops now may chase you down if you get spotted holding a gun in public or going to fast, but is just annoying to start a mission; drive three islands at the pace of a one-legged sloth; fail for god's knows reason the mission, and have your last checkpoint set at Salieri's Bar. They could have made something that on some roads you had 40, on others 60 etc...

Depends on the style of game, and the type of gameplay. Something like link to the past on snes or super Mario hold up very well gameplay wise and the graphics aren't distractingly bad as they are "cartoony", so it seems ok.

Where as doom, doesn't quite hold up gameplay wise and the "realistic" graphics don't either.

Also a lot of vertical shooters seem to hold up ok.

Also emulators can help a TON with some older games, look wayyyyyyy better. Starfox adventures upscaled to 4k looks so much better than GameCube it's rediculous.
And remakes too of course.

I replayed DOOM and DOOM II like 1.5 years ago and I had a blast. Timeless gameplay.

Older 3D games without analog movement support I have found the hardest to get back into. However I can still go back and play pong and other games from the atari collection games I have, and still feel fun to pick up and play, especially with a friend. So never too old/Depends

You are entitled to your opinion, but I'm afraid your pretty much alone on this. I'd even dare say that objectively Doom is still to this day one of the best FPS experiences around. ..Just make sure to not play the bad ports.

Anyway, many old 2D games with fluid framerates are still fine to play today IMO, but I do often have an issue with old 3D games on flawed 3D hardware. 3D PS and N64 games f.ex., I just can't deal with it.

Newer games like BoTW bother me with bad visuals, but old games where the visuals are bad don't bother me because I understand the technical limitations of the time.

I mean, Thief 1 was largely ugly at the time because of the horrible character models, but is still a game I can play today due to its brilliance in terms of gameplay, level design, and sound effects for the environment.

There is no 1rule that fits all the games, back in summer 2017 as a goodbye to my outdated pc that couldnt play basically any new/demanding games i played og diablo(no mods/expacks, actual og game that launched jan 1997 for pc, and in 1998 got ported to og playstation(couch coop, was amazing;p) and i fully enjoyed it, beat it even on hell difficulty(max lvl is 50, i reached 42 only but still its srs grind;p), game ofc had some archaic mechanics and graphics, but from overall gameplay and soundtrack standpoint- it holds out to this very day, i will even dare to say- soundwise its best out of all diablo games.

It's game-by-game, but really the only time I find my enjoyment consistently hampered by conventions of old is NES-era games where a game over means you get booted out to the title screen and have to start the entire game over from the top. I think I'm at a point where I'm always going to play those with save states to mitigate that problem.

Early 3D can be pretty bad when it comes to visuals and controls. People were still learning. When it comes to 2D games, in general, if they were fun and playable they still are. Even early stuff like Atari 2600. Sure, they can be super simple, but aren’t unplayable.

I seriously doubt I'm alone on this. You can't even look up and down in doom, a very basic control feature by today's standards. It is definately not one of the best fps experiences around today. I dare you to put this in front of 10 people who have never played it and 3 other AAA fps games and see how it they all score.
