Baby boy due in two months, naming conflict with gf

Worst video game name to give a kid?

Normal names are overrated. You end up having to do stuff like using your middle initial with your name to differentiate yourself from others.

Not a game thing, but a friend of mine gave his kid the somewhat unusual name Daelan. However, he was given a more normal middle name in case the kid ended up hating the weirder one.

I wouldn't want to explain to my kid one day that I named him after a videogame character.

Sure, Robin Williams did it, but he's fucking Robin Williams

Zelda Williams is still a good name, regardless of who her dad was.

Name your kid whatever you like. A good name is a good name. You shouldn't be embarrassed about what inspired it.

But shes not named after the videogame character.

It's pretty common knowledge that she is.

I'm all for unique names but within reason. The kid has to deal with your attempt at being different for the rest of its life.

That's good advice. My daughters name is Piper but she has 2 middle names just in case she doesn't like Piper later on (although Piper is an adorable name).

My mother is a teacher. He had a student called Maverick because his mother loved Mel Gibson's movie. All kids laughed at him.

I like Joel...Voted for that one. I think Geralt is a bit old century and out of place tbh, but not some crazy weird name he’ll get teased for.

I don’t get what’s wrong with naming your son after something you’re fond of? My daughter’s middle name is Autumn because I love that season. First name is Hayley because I listened to Eminem a lot growing up.

Geralt is a real name and would be a fine name. You know, if your girlfriend was on board.

Why not have it be his middle name? I was called my middle name all through my childhood because my first name was so common.

I think given our generation, Geralt should be fine. Would either of you happen to be Polish? It is a name in Polish folklore.

Geralt/Gerald/Gerolt is actually a Germanic and not a Slavic name.

@OP
Do you want the poor boy to have to explain to everyone for the rest of his life that it's actually Geralt with a hard g instead of a soft g?

The Butcher of Blaviken has a nice ring to it. Kids will be too scared to pick on him at least

I'm not sure about some of the other users, but just like them hopefully, I'm completely joking. Please don't name your son after a video game character with such a "unique" name. Just go Dante or something if you want a good video game name. You can even say he was named after Inferno or something too

I have a baby boy due in two months and me and my better half have been going through a whole bunch of names. I've been very adamant about naming him Geralt as an homage to the Witcher series and CD Projekt Red but the gf is not convinced. She thinks that people will think it's a weird name and might alienate him from others growing up. Personally I think it's very close to a normal name and people will just think it's a variation of Gerald. So what do you guys think? Should I listen to her? Is she overreacting? Thanks!

Geralt? Sounds like he will have to be a home schooler. Sorry OP but your wife is right. Maybe get a Witcher tshirt or tattoo or something to show your personal love for it. Don't bestow it on your kid.

Been gaming for 30 years.... My ex wife said, let's name our now 5 year old son, Lincoln, that way I could call him Link for short if I wanted.

I was like... Hmmmm.... Naw that's just opening cans of worms down the road.

naming a kid "Geralt" is a shame; saddling an innocent soul with "Daelan" is a travesty.

I named my first son Blaze.

It's a great name, he's 10 now and loves the fact that his name is different from most peoples.

Here's the funny thing tho. Since then we've had'a daughter and 2 yrs ago another son...who was born on 4/20.

How am I even living on the same planet with some of you...

Name him Sephiroth, and teach some black magic as he growns up :D

I'd love to name my kid Chris, I kind like that name...

If my wife is asian, Kaworu all the way! :D

Why not name your kid Andrzej Sapkowski [Surname].

I'd say he could be the next George Washington Carver but, well, signs point to no at this juncture. Though maybe he'll take after his mother and turn out pretty sharp in spite of the genetic handicap you're saddling him with.

As someone with a different name who tells people to call him something else, don't do it. First days of school always sucked during roll call.
