Bad Christmas gaming gifts.

I got this but I picked it my self

Never understood wtf was going on and the character always seemed too big for the screen.

Then I got this with the xmas money that year and it sucked also.

When I was a younger lad, my father gave me this for Christmas:

He also gave me Tengen Rolling Thunder that year. I ended up loving Rolling Thunder, but this game... deserves all of my scorn.

Since those were simpler days, when I got a game I suffered through it for better or for worse. I didn't get new games very often.

I beat it and subjected myself to the punishment.

thanks to the adapter, it was easy to find American Snes games at my store, and I couldn't believe they had the LOTR one! In time for Christmas!!

too bad it was one of the worst games I have ever played...that was so soul-crushingly disappointing words cannot express how bad I felt while playing that POS

Most of the gaming stuff was perfect. Toys and clothes were almost always wrong though lol. Up until high school my mom knew exactly what games I already had and would ask my friends what ones I was talking about. Got a few doubles over the years but most of the time I was pleasantly surprised.

I got this for my 8th or so birthday. My parents had recently divorced and my mom was working two jobs, so I was extremely greatful for the gift, but that only made me feel more guilty for thinking it a piece of shit. I had only played a few RPGs, and none of them were first person dungeon crawlers like Shining in the Darkness is. The world map being a literal map with 3 destinations, and only one dungeon, was super disappointing to me as well. It just seemed terrible in every way.

My sister and I would play through games together back then. After watching her play it a bit, and then becoming more involved as she got deeper into the game, I started to understand the appeal. Eventually I ended up trying the game myself, and loving it despite it being a bit too much for me at the time (having no map was very difficult for me).

Now I love this game. Bought the Sonic Ultimate Collection for 360 just for this game. SitD is one of my only experiences with drawing graph paper maps, but I'm greatful for it. This game made me appreciate gems like Etrian Odyssey. I started off hating it because I was to young and dumb to give it a proper shake, and now it's my favorite genesis game.

The Adventures of Bayou Billy, Christmas of 1989 I believe. Awesome soundtrack though. That was the first Konami game I played that I thought just flat out sucked ass.

Since we're sharing stories I have a pretty bad one. I forget how old I was (lets say it was in a time where Funcoland was still a thing since that is where this came from) my mom bought me a NCAA basketball game for... the dreamcast I think. I can't really recall, anyway, I didn't own the console it was for which was bad enough but when I opened the case the disc was literally CRACKED in half. I told my mom and her only response was "whelp it was only $1 anyway".

I wasn't really bummed or anything though, got plenty of good gifts that year and now it makes for a fairly amusing story.

My aunt used to travel all over Europe, and one Christmas brought me like 50 games for Playstation that she paid like $20 for total. They were all bootleg games, with horrible typos like "PLAYSTATYON" and at least 50% of them we're even actual CDs, but plastic discs with reflective paper put on one side of them to appear that they were games.

It was good for the laughs, but I felt bad that she actually spent $20 on them..

I was pretty happy at the time, but I don't think I've ever managed to get past the 3rd level in the office. I was also disappointed at not being able to do any of the cool moves in the game. The move list in the manual was pretty shitty and not being able to really understand English at the time made it worse.

I just got an arcade game PCB for my cabinet.

Kageki.

It's god awful and might be the worst game ever created for an arcade.

(sorry Robot)

Still haven't forgiven my grandparents for this yet. I discovered the ability to trade in games because of this terrible game.

That is a nice story. At first I was like "what!" but I'm glad you grew into liking it.

Very cool artwork all around, and one thing the game did that helped me a ton compared to other (western) first person RPGs was that movement was actually animated. Really helped me keep my bearings.

And really memorable music. I love this song so much, it's probably the most epic dungeon music I've ever heard...the part that starts at 33 seconds is awesome.

It's also the reason I got into Etrian Odyssey too. Looking forward to the next one on 3DS and Unchained Blades which is coming out soon. All because of this great game.

I remember my uncle's copy that I borrowed was busted up and electrical taped together...yeah, I lost all my saves a few times. :(

Before I knew what reviews were. Should have just gotten my own copy of Goldeneye. I always borrowed it from a friend.

another burning disappointment. i was in total MI fanboy mode after the first movie and previews on ONM were so positive, I literally couldn't wait for this to come out. I felt as if they sprayed muriatic acid on my arse

OT, but I can't believe the AVGN hasn't done a video on old LotR games yet.

I actually sort of liked both of the above games. Like, they weren't great, and I didn't own either, (played one at a friend's, rented the other), but I had fun with them.

I thought the Genesis version of this was bad when I was a kid (it was) but years and years later my friend dug up a copy he owned for SNES and that one took the cake by having load times. Lolol.

I never really received any "bad" video game related Christmas gifts. The only gifts I would receive that were video game related were those I had specifically requested, as my parents/family know nothing of video games.

Thinking back on bad decisions that I made, I would say that I can't really think of any glaring ones off the top of my head in all honesty. Maybe ZombiU will prove me wrong this year...

I bought my family a 32X expansion for the Genesis back in the day. It was a ton of money to me at the time. What an utter piece of un-supported shit.

I got the Acclaim football games for the N64 two years in a row, from my cousin. He also got me Extreme-G one year too. What an awful game. Thank God for F-Zero X back then. To this day, no video game has ever given me a headache or made my nauseous That game..fuck that game....made me so sick. Just thinking about it makes my head hurt :/

You have no idea how bad I wanted that thing. Holy shit. I was ape shit for that....I never got one....

My parents and my brother made a wise decision to deprive me of that.

Christmas 1991.

Got a SNES. So many great games out during that Christmas break: Actraiser, Final Fantasy II, Pilotwings, SimCity, FZero, Super Castlevania IV, Super Ghouls & Ghosts.

...

I get this game for Christmas:

Drakkhen.jpg

In my parents' defense they didn't know shit about games and I didn't even ask for/expect a SNES for Christmas.
The upside was that the system came with Super Mario World and I ended up renting a bunch of games over the Christmas/New Years break. :p

In time I came to find enjoyment out of Drakkhen. Really obscure title & not really a good game by any stretch, but pretty ahead of its time and it had a great OST.

My aunt was generally pretty damn good at picking out games to give as presents. Shed falter every now and again though and the worst was the christmas i got this:

I thought itd be great. I loved the the movie! An rpg based off that and the books? Wow sign me up!

Game was awful. I suffered through it, even the overly long Tom Bombadil section, until finally getting stuck in the Mines of Moria like 90% of the people who owned the game

On the plus side: Full SNES mouse support!
Sure, it's still not that great, but it was another game to use the mouse with at least.

Drakkhen was actually my 4th SNES game, after Mario World, Pilotwings, and F-Zero. Sure, it's not perfect, but I always really enjoyed it. Pretty challenging, although the battles are a bit awkward, but a great sense of exploration, and, as you sound, an amazing soundtrack. I wrote a basic FAQ/Walkthrough for it like 9 years ago too, which at the time was pretty much the only one around online (that I knew of anyway), so that was fun to do.
