So this is why they were selling those jug things in Sainsbury's when I went in there!!!

Thing is, they were selling the special milk jugs for bagged milk with 'get your easy to use jug for bagged milk' written all over them, but not selling bagged milk, and I had no idea what bagged milk even was until I saw this thread.

What happens when I'm carrying this home with all my other shopping and it bursts? And how are you supposed to store this in your fridge? I guess you have to lie it flat or it will just flop about and fall over. What am I going to put in the door of my fridge now?! TELL ME THAT CANADA. This sounds like a nightmare.

It also seems like it would actually use more plastic than the cartons they currently come in, which are made of pretty thin plastic. Plus the jug thing is made of plastic.

I for one won't stand for this.

You need to buy the plastic jug just once, then re-use it forever. It's a cheap initial investment. In the long run bagged milk is cheaper to produce.

Ugh, I knew this shit was going on in Canada but never would have even dreamed that civilized countries would partake in this shit. Canadians are savages.

Put them on top of the other shopping, like you do with eggs.

Well, since the whole point of the exercise is to use less material, do you really think in the long run these bags will use more material?

It's odd to see so few people in favor of things like this. The amount of food packaging we use in modern society is pretty disgusting.

If I were a supermarket hell yeah I'd go for this. Transport weight alone would drop like a rock. Just gotta make sure to keep a steady supply of jugs with cutters on hand initially.

Wonder if I can convince some supermarkets in the States to try this...

Hmm...

It's amazing how many Gaffers can't grasp this concept. :lol
Its not that some us don't grasp it it just that its so ridiculous its hard to come to grips with it. Its seems like something out of a third world country that is done to reduce costs.

You Canadians are telling us that if you had a choice in the store of box milk or milk in a bag you would get the milk in a bag? I doubt that.

This totally cancels out tomato ketchup flavored potato chips.

Sorry Canada, bagged milk is dumb!

What's next, cheese in a spray can? :lol

Oh, wait...

so now i have to be extra careful how I pack my shopping?

And I still don't see how this is going to be stored in the fridge, or how they will arrange them in shops. How do you even pick it up if it has no handle? So when you're buying a nice big 4 pint bag of milk that weighs several kilos you just have to pinch it at the edge and try to lift it into your basket and hope for the best?

I honestly cannot tell if some of these people are serious...How hard can it possibly be to understand?
Because it's a stupid idea. It saves the manufacturer costs and saves me maybe 10 cents. I'd rather just pay the extra to avoid the hassle of getting my own jug, cutting the pouch, and potentially having it spill over due to there being no cover.

If I were a supermarket, I'd be all over this. As a consumer, however, fuck you.

This is ridiculous. Why not pour the milk in the jug?

Because it would be fucking disgusting to leave that thing open. It will taste like cheese and onions.

But really, I haven't seen anyone here drink from bagged milk in YEARS.

Most jugs come with this

that you can put on the jug near the handle, there is a small hole made for them and they're not getting in the way. It takes literally 1 sec to cut the damn bag without needing to look for scissors, it's not harder or longer to do than taking the carton and opening and closing it everytime you want milk.
That still means you need to use a tool to open your fucking milk. Again, not "difficult", and I "grasp" it, it just seems like a bunch of unnecessary steps. Dealing with a loose bag with a hole on top < an easy to open, easy to seal solid container.

So much less waste! I approve.
But then again, I am less than an hour away from Canada.....

You know, you're avatar alone makes me like you...maybe it's the kitty

Uhhh we do have a choice. Our supermarkets carry both bags and cartons. Usually the bag section is larger than the carton section, so I assume that yes, a lot of us choose the bags.

I can't see any, if you want to use a small amount, you need to put into a small jug rather. A carton with screw cap is the best option.

No, you put the bag in a plastic holder. Cut the top corners and pour. You don't use the whole bag at once...you pour as needed.. its really not hard to grasp. Its quite obvoius a bag is far more enviro friendly than a carton. Saying that out west (Alberta) I have not seen milk in bags since a my very young days.. many many years ago.

What if your carton is leaking? What if the bottle has a leaky cap? You have the same chance of bursting a milk bag as you'd have with cartons or bottles. Don't worry, it's not like theres some super high pressure in those bags :P

Welcome to the milk that tastes better!

Carton leaves more taste on the milk than those bags. Also, fuck off with always opening and closing the carton.

*bows to bagged milk*

I have had leaky milk cartons far more than I would like.. pretty weak argument. If I could get bags I would.

Yeah but with cartons you have to keep opening and closing the lid at the top every time you want milk. Oh noes!

That's just shitty Canadian manufacturing trying to train ya in to using bags. BUY AMERICAN! RESIST!

Alright guys... why don't you keep an old milk jug, wash it out after it's empty... and REFILL IT with milk FROM A BAG! Use, rinse, repeat. The ultimate form of recycling if you refuse to use it straight from the bag.

..................uhhh

how about then cutting the bag out of the equation and ...... just sell the milk in the jug???

you know, like how they do it in developed countries like the USA

We have the same jugs here idiot.

Truth, I've never had a milk bag leak on me, nor have I ever seen someone have a milk bag leak on them. Milk cartons on the other hand....

Bags are and will always be superior to cartons

God I hate those Costco containers. Especially when the jug is full, they are so hard to pour into a small container such as a mug without getting it on the counter. Then again I am just a clumsy person.

I don't get how putting milk in a bag saves space. You would have to lay it down which would take away space in your fridge. Plus I bet there are a lot more accidents with it spilling.

But I guess all of that is a mute point if it is assumed you then throw it in a container once you get it home. Is that the case....you transfer the milk from the bag to a container or does it come in a resealable bag?

Also I once thought this milk in a bag meant the dry milk like what they give to poor people. I had no idea they would put actual milk in a bag until someone actually posted the picture on GAF.

Moot.
Moot point.

Bagged milk is inferior.

How should a milk carton be biodegradable? It has a "plastic coating" otherwise the carton would just soak through.

Less plastic than a bag, and they can always use fax (like paper cups).

Opening the bagged milk and leaving it open in the fridge? Canadian fridges must smell like the devil's meatus. Even your non-fat, skim, 1%, and 2% pussified varieties will rank up the place in a matter of hours. They haven't made a bag yet that can hold Real American (TM) Whole Milk.

zedge said:
Its only a small opening in the bag. Do you think cartons are air tight?

Who cares? Its like putting an open soda can in the fridge. When I screw the top onto a jug its a lot more air-tight than a fucking plastic bag with a hole in it.

I feel like Ive wandered into a thread where someone is proclaiming they have a better way of picking up dog-shit...with their barehands!

Im disgusted that people leave an open container in their fridge when they drink milk this way.

This.

Seriously, I must be totally missing something here. You're putting a bag of milk (in its little jug thing) with a completely open corner in the fridge? Just like that? No seal on that corner or anything? Just an open bag of milk in the fridge?

Yeah, no thanks.

yeah it doesnt seem very clever leaving an open milk container. The air will get at it and it will be messed with. Plus it will smell like whatever else you have in your fridge.

This is the worst idea ever.

People here sure are difficult.

A lot of them are also talk like they are inept at doing anything. It's really not hard at all. I've had bags, cartons, and jugs. Bags are the easiest, and best way.

A bag of milk is easier than a jug. Really? Really?

It might be easy but its disgusting! Do you have anything in your fridge besides milk and pot pies? If you have a potent marinade in your fridge, your open milk will smell and taste like that marinade! Any potent smelling food can do that to other food!

I fail to see how screwing a fucking cap on a jug is a harder way than cutting and leaving an open hole in a makeshift container.
