Because it's a stupid idea. It saves the manufacturer costs and saves me maybe 10 cents. I'd rather just pay the extra to avoid the hassle of getting my own jug, cutting the pouch, and potentially having it spill over due to there being no cover.

If I were a supermarket, I'd be all over this. As a consumer, however, fuck you.

I look at it from an environmentalist point of view. People buy a lot of milk and (in the UK at least) there is a lot of plastic in the packaging. Inevitably it creates a massive amount of waste packaging, so this helps.

Granted it's a weird idea, but none of the objections in this thread really hold any weight. If you worry about it spilling, you be more careful with the bag at the supermarket. If you worry about it being open in the fridge, you put a clip over the cut in the bag when you aren't using it.

It might be easy but its disgusting! Do you have anything in your fridge besides milk and pot pies? If you have a potent marinade in your fridge, your open milk will smell and taste like that marinade! Any potent smelling food can do that to other food!

So fold over the open corner and clip it?

This topic was about bagged milk in the UK all of a sudden , as per usual, turns into another American vs Canada debate :lol

I've never had a milk bag leak on me, and you just store them in the lying down in the fridge. It doesn't take that much space, they aren't huge.

I totally get the environmental arguments here, and they're totally valid points - let's just use those instead of saying that bagged milk is "easier" or "more convenient", because come on, it isn't.

What about, like, a big milk dispenser at the supermarket like they have for "purified" water, where you bring your little milk jug back and fill it up there? Cheaper, and more environmentally friendly. Or, hell... let's just all get milk faucets in our houses like we have for water. *heh*

Don't be so sure. Anything that saves money for the producer/distributor/retailer companies will find its way to America
It's already infiltrated America.

Some school districts in So Cal have been indoctrinating our children with this poppycock for years now.

no it is not. this is inevitable. as soon as the producers of milk around the world see the cost efficiency of bagged milk, they will adopt it.

Canada welcomes you to the 21st century.

In 21st century we drink milk from bag

You putting a couple of laughing emoticons doesn't make it any less true, that some people keep asking all these other questions because they don't get it because they are genuinely curious about how it works.

In America, we drink milk like this:

Try that with milk in a bag in a jug.

How in the hell are we supposed to ban plastic grocery bags AND make the switch to bagged milk? It doesn't make any sense. If you want to save the environment, use paper. If you want to save on shipping costs, set up more local distributors.

And LOL @ price comparisons:
Americans don't buy milk in 2 pint containers. We buy that shit by the gallon, and it's always on sale so if you buy 2 you get a 3rd at a discounted price or some such. Your packaging reduction percentage shrinks exponentially as volume goes up. (See: Volume vs Surface Area)

yeah it doesnt seem very clever leaving an open milk container. The air will get at it and it will be messed with. Plus it will smell like whatever else you have in your fridge.

This is the worst idea ever.
Having used bag milk at one point I can say no, it does not taste funny. The bags are small and last a day or two. Not enough time to get stale.

i had bagged milk in elementary. after i was done with one, i blew it up and skewered it with a straw and made nipples on it.

The UK must be protected by America from villainous heathens. It's World War 2 all over again!

Drinking like a slob is a positive point for milk in cartons, nice.

is it just me or have you lost your tag? I kinda liked it.

Stabbing a straw into an unruly bag. Much more practical than have a lid which you can open and close.

Jesus, it's like I'm talking to CAVEMEN!

Not going to work very well in Ireland and UK.
Fridges that are sold here are made to take cartons of a standard size in the door, same size and width carton for milk and juices.

Can you please tell us the tale of when bagged milk saved you, your mom, and your estranged uncle from horrible death?

People really think that bagged milk taste like whatever is in the bridge because of a very small opening in one of its corner? I've taste milk in all kind of different containers, in the same damn fridge, and it's all the same taste. Dont speak if you don't know anything. My bagged milk doesn't taste like vinegar, marinade or cheese. My carton milk doesn't taste like this either. Keep talking nonsense GAF.

JUGITTM - which contains a spike that pierces the bag, forms a no-leak seal, and delivers milk through the spout.

someone explain this. i grew up with the milk bag/container pictured in the op.

Milk bags come like this at the store

milkbagcandada.jpeg

The top of the overall bag is easy to hold onto and the inner bags aren't so fragile that you really have to worry about breaking them as long as you use common sense.

I use something like this to store the bags in the fridge when they aren't in the jug since then it takes up less space that way

Btw having that one small opening dosn't effect the taste what so ever. Their's only enough milk for a day or 2 tops per bag and you'll drink it long before it gets "tainted" a little air isn't going to hurt it.

This really is true. Bagged milk is coming your way America, whether you like it or not.

One thing though, why does that milk look beige?
shit looks like pond water

Milk- the Canadain way:

Buy 3-pack bag of milk. (be extra careful not to accidentally pierce the bags in transport)

Open 3-pack of milk and remove individual milk bag, store remaining milk bags in fridge for later use. Dispose of larger bag that individual milk bags came in.

Insert milk bag into specially made, commie built, milk bag jug.

Using specially made, commie built, milk bag cutter, cut off corner of milk bag.

pour milk.

fold opened corner of milk bag and secure using chip-clip, or go out and buy a specially made, commie built milk bag clip.

It's the superior way!

And you wonder why people think Canadains are screwy in the head.

you can't LOL at price comparisons because you have no anything to back you up. the article states that the supermarket in question will save money, and pass on the savings to consumers. there is no argument to that, unless you're a conspiracy theorist. go weigh the amount of plastic in an empty gallon container, then weight the amount of plastic in 3 1.3L bags and the bag they come in, if you really want to start on this route.

furthermore, as someone who enjoys skipping the glass and going straight for the container, it is actually easier to drink from a bag than a carton. your mouth forms a seal around the bag and there is no chance for spillage.

Yes I believe it was a tuesday... it was a cold dark day ... you can feel the tension int he air... tense sweat built on furrowed brow... clenching a fist as I made wayward towards the outskirts of town... milkbag in hand, I threw it at the savage attacker blinding him terribly and it was enough to incapicitate him long enough while we made our wayward escape... Uncle Bob, mother Tessa, and the twins, all made it home in time for Pancakes...

Victory, but at what cost?

That's awesome.

honest question here: how does the bag not fall out of the container? is there something to hold it in?
you don't turn it upside down:D. But really though the bag is heavy enough and the container is designed to make the bag stick. Not positive on how it works but it doesn't come out.

No, it wont. No one will fucking buy that retarded shit. Youd have better luck trying to get us to go metric.

Fuck bagged milk.

the most you invert the bag is 90 degrees, and that is only when the bag is empty. picture pouring liquid form a pitcher... the bag acts the same as that liquid does, ie only comes out when it you pour... the bag never falls out

when i was a younger man we used to have them out here (vancouver).

i don't see them anymore though and it's probably because it's stupid. i prefer cartons.

Ok let's see:

- Buy a 3 bag of milk (reality is that they are tuff and they DON'T pierce during transport more than carton bottles)

-Put the 3 bag of milk directly in the fridge. (you don't even use grocery bags for a 3 bag of milk.)

-Take a bag and put it in a milk jug. Cut the corner in 1,3 seconds with cisors (who don't have that at hand in the kitchen wtf?)

-Pour into glass and drink.

See? for normal people like me it's much less assle than what you describe. And I don't have to open/close the thing each time I want to drink but only 3 times (3 bags). And your fridges are fucking small in the states if space can be a concern. It roughly takes the same amount of space than a gallon of milk.

.

Yeah the metric system really took off too, we are a stubborn and ignorant bunch...and if our refusal to accept change is what it takes in order to stem the tide in the battle against the bag, so be it.

How old are you? I am 23 and have had people tell me that it was like this before, in the darkagaes but I refuse to believe them.

Let's see here:

- Buy carton of milk

- Place in fridge

- twist cap off and on in the time it takes to carry it from fridge to countertop

Seriously, neither is a real hassle, but trying to argue that using milk in a bag is somehow easier and involves fewer steps is nonsense.
