Battlefield 1 Beta Impressions

So will this game have the obnoxious level of gun customization or not? A torch attachment, and a suppressor seem fine, but there's no way theyll add a bunch of scopes and grips and all that right?

The game plays so well without all that, and I like that the guns have a stock scope

Don't think there is any customization, just different guns or versions of a single gun. WW1 era guns were not made modular or for customization, typically and changes were completely new models, but there was usually nothing you could simply attach or customize on these weapons.

As it is, you have sometimes multiple versions of the same weapon, but you can't customize them with different attachments.

Directly from Battlefield 1 website:

Weapon customization is more focused.
We definitely want to allow you to customize your weapons in Battlefield 1, but we also heard your feedback that we should try to find a way to do this without adding hundreds of additional attachments. That's why Battlefield 1 utilizes pre-set Loadouts for each weapon - you're still able to customize your weapons to make sure they work with your playstyle, but in a more focused way.

Each weapon has up to three Pre-Sets.
Maybe you want a shotgun that packs a little more punch? Or maybe you'd rather one that trades stability for accuracy? The different weapon Pre-Sets should help you out. Some have up to three, giving you different ways to play with the same weapons. You're able to customize them as well, changing the zoom levels, reticles, and more.

i need to stop using the assault kit's AT gun as a primary against infantry

people need to stop actually giving me ammo to keep using the AT gun

i'm a bad person

Right..

lol I'm so glad betas are a thing. Dice will probably fix this.

I have a problem with the snipers and player health recovery. Sometimes I'll put 84 damage on to an enemy, cycle a new round into the chamber and shoot at them again for 40 or more and keep repeating this 4 or 5 times until they finally die. Just feels horrible.

I have pretty much the exact same components on my PC (did you also get the HP Envy deal?) and I would suggest to check your settings on the PC if you think the PS4 version looks close to the PC version. Because there is a pretty drastic difference, especially in regards to both higher resolution and higher frame rate.

In regards to preferring the controller, that is no doubt a personal preference, so all I will say to that is I would urge you to take the time to learn and get comfortable with the KB&M on the PC. Just as the snipers dominate, you can as well. The precision offered with the KB&M over a controller is indeed real. So much so I honestly view it as almost two different experiences entirely. Again, I realize this is a personal preference, but at the very least force yourself to use the KB&M for the rest of the beta.

Needless to say, I am going with the PC version myself, however I may do as I did with BF3, and pick up the console version as well so I can play with friends here and there. The only problem was because my preferred platform was PC, whenever I played with my friends on the console I was always a very low level compared to everyone else. Still held my own, but was missing out on some unlocks.

Yep, I have the same rig. Maybe the reason I thought it almost looked as good was because I went from PC to One to PS4, so seeing the improvement from the One to PS4 made me think it looked near as good.

I realize the m/kb combo precision is way better, but I like the controller because I feel like it balances out the classes better in this particular game (with my limited experience of course). When you have such high precision, you're going to have so many more people going sniper who can get long ass shots off in the blink of an eye, plus they'll be more effective at close ranges with snipers as well. I just think it puts too much emphasis on precision weapons, whereas the controller makes those 300 meter + shots a lot more difficult, giving a more even spread of usefulness across all classes. But you may be right, and I haven't completely made the decision yet.

I know that this is a Battlefield 1 thread, but I was thinking about picking up BF3 on PC because Amazon has the Premium for $15. I'm an Origin Access member, but it's just the base game.

Anyways, looking at BF3's stats, there are still over 5,000 PC players online? Wow. I think I have to get it even more now.

Everyone talking about cavalry being op.....do I have the worst luck on them then?

I get shot like 3 times and I'm dead it seems....

Played a couple rounds this morning, I absolutely love this game. I'm getting the same felling with this game as I did with BFBC2, the last great BF game imo.

Wish it would release sooner.

The mouse and keyboard argument is spot on for this game. I downloaded both to test (PC and PS4) and the console was the vastly better experience for me. On PC, sniping feels like I'm cheating it's so easy. On console, I have to really work for my shots and it felt super rewarding and balanced.

Score was 270-294 when we started a comeback

We had 5/7 flags, 6/7 at one point.

We caught up to 283-300 but that comeback can never happen so long as the enemy held that one flag.

This is what I mean about games being determined by late game, and sometimes even mid game

Maybe we arent supposed to come back and should have pulled the comeback earlier, but I feel as if old conquest would allow a comeback with greater degree than the limited window here

Playing it on PS4 now, it doesn't look great to be honest. Really blurry and bad performance.

Putting AT mines on the track for the train to happily run over is so fun. I would love to see a whole squad do it and how much damage it would do.

That feeling when your mine trap finishes off a damaged train as it tries to escape from a point.

So good.

100%. BF4 feels like a stiff janky mess in comparison. Plus I'm having more fun with the beta map than any Vanilla CQ map in 4.

I was picking it up regardless, because it's a main line Battlefield, but wasn't expecting it be nearly this great. Kinda throws a monkey wrench in my fall gaming plans since this is going to be one of the primary things im playing instead of just a rotation game like BF4.

Stupid question: how do you take out and use the sword while on a horse?
I was using that one. It did 9.

Distance doesn't seem to affect damage as much as the previous game. I wonder if that is in the testing phase too? It seems too close to launch to make such a change.
Someone mentioned there are changes to the beta that will be added when going gold.

Has anyone seen a horse die before it's rider? Just wondering if it's even possible.

I have a feeling Dice tweaked the horse health to be higher than it's intended to be just so that people get to use the horses more than they usually would. They probably need a lot of player data to see how they should balance them.

I've never been one to cry "It's not realistic!" in a battlefield game, but watching horses shrug off tank shells regularly just breaks muh immersion.

I just got 40 kills in a heavy tank without dying. Lol. Just patrolling C,D,B and wreaking havoc. I do think they're a little OP, but the thing that allows you to get so many kills in them is that no one bothers to do anything about them, allowing people who are good in tanks to steamroll pretty much everyone. There's so much at your disposal for dealing with tanks too, mines especially are incredibly effective and important in this game, a few of those at C and you're almost guaranteed a kill. That's what ended my streak.

I am certain they will patch AT Mines to survive after death.

Those things were great at regulating and punishing tanks with instant death, but they always stayed in the world after a player's death. It's not the case in this beta.

I think that alone will help curb a lot of tanks that roam freely.

2 on PC, probably a D-pad direction on controller, when you first get on a horse it should show you the prompts on the right side of the screen.

There's the gun, sword, ammo pack and health pack.

On PC, press 2 and press 1 to return to rifle. On PS4, pres triangle. On Xbox press Y. Theres no custom controls on horse yet u_u

Cavalry troops need an off-the-horse armor nerf in the worst way.

But it's so fun to go on a 15 man killing spree because nobody can bring me down while I 2-shot them. Kill dude. Throw medpack and heal. Kill person. Throw medpack and heal. Refill ammo. Rinse and repeat.

That guy is a 1-man army =)

Thank GOD!

I HATED the COD level of customization. It was ridiculously over the top and just made balance feel overwhelming.

Restricting the balance this way is great. No more foregrips and angled grips and all that stuff

Less is more, and I hope DICE follows through.

I love, love, love the way they restrict and focus the game instead of going full out customization/freedom that usually screws over some games for the label of having "tons of content"

My beta impressions after about 8 hours.

Hit detection is still awful. I shoot someone in the body at least 3 times plus a headshot and they don't drop. They hit me twice in the body and I die. And the death screen shows their health is 80 - 100%.

The spawn system is awful. Insta-killed when spawning multiple times, especially in aircraft.

The Hype Train is some rubberband fake comeback bullshit. It doesn't even work. It just pointless disrupts the flow of the game.

Yes, I actually prefer the lack of customization. It gives each weapon it's own identity rather than creating some Frankenstein's monster with various scopes, grips, magazine sizes, and whatever else they have in FPS games these days.

I love the relative simplicity of these weapons. Hell, I wouldn't mind a bigger jump in this direction, something similar to 1943 where each class has their one weapon and that's it.

So I've had a go at all the classes now, finishing with Assault. All this time, I've been complaining about tanks in Rush, yet its very easy for one determined assault player to deal 40-50 damage to a tank just with the grenade bundle. Which makes me wonder what people are actually doing letting a guy in a light tank dominate the map on his own, when it would need maybe two assaults attacking him at the same time to stop a 30-0 kill spree.

Try shooting someone 5 times with the shotgun point blank and getting 80 damage each time. By the time this guy died I got 400 points. Dude was just camping in his corner and I looked through the window shooting in his head.

Or unloading a whole clip as the sentry into a guy from behind getting 1 damage per hit...

They need a lot of fixing there.

1943 was perfect in that regard. It made the game so much more immediately playable because you could adapt your tactics to what was coming towards you.
Honestly I probably would prefer a sequel to that game over BF1. MP only, focused and trimming all the fat. Just a few more maps.

They're on the spawn map. Pick the tank when one is available, and you choose one of 4 options. One is the light tank (another is the Landship).

Well I didn't know I could change which one I spawned. That's pretty neat. I guess I just jump on it too fast to notice I have options.

Thanks.

I really hope the maps are consistently good. I wasn't a huge fan of most BF3's maps, and BF4 maps were pretty much downright awful, even the DLC ones. But even outside the map layout, nearly everything about it really feels good to play, and it feels fresh which is something I haven't felt from a BF game since BC2.
