Battlefield 3 PC time warps to 1999 for server browser; using All-Seeing Eye

I would assume you still need to ping all the servers, no? It can't be instant.

No, it doesn't. It does a priority ping, servers that best matches your filter settings etc. are on top and get the pins, rest of the servers are updated with all the info except ping. That's what it did to me in the Alpha - It's perfect and it works.

If you find a server that isn't pinged, click on it and that's refreshed too.

It's instant.

To download and install the game?
That's not the point I was making... my freaking web browser could download and install the game.

I was under the impression the game was going to be integrated into Origin, like (dare I say it) how Team Fortress 2 is integrated into Steam.

Bah.

I never remember needing to alt-tab when I was playing the alpha? What the hell? Also, Battlelog ran great and I would prefer it over to having watch the Nvidia, DOLBY, EA, DICE, MCDONALDS SUPPORTED, splash screens.

If the game starts up incredibly fast I could see myself being fine with it.

In the alpha it was fast. I had no hiccups or waits. I'd click for a match, say "I like pie," and the game was ready to go. Unless something changes from alpha, then people will be pleasantly surprised how quick it is, and that all this bitching going on is unfounded.

At least for the alpha it was quite snappy. I actually liked it more than BC2 because normally you had to do this:

Start the game -> shitty Logo spam -> login to my account -> wait to server refresh -> join game

With Battlelog:

Login to Battlelog with origin running -> double click on the server to join the game

It completely bypasses the need for me to have to go through the motions of the game startup

the only downside I found was I had to exit the game completely to access another server (no in-game browser while you are in a match).

Probably because once you join a server, you tend to stay on that server for hours and when you quit, you just quit. People make it sound like we're server jumping 3 times a minute and it's the biggest hassle in the world.

typical sensational journalism but I think it's most likely that they haven't played alpha.

Battlelog have the best server browser I've ever used + VOIP system + friends system + chat system + stats system. And all this is much better done than Valve's offering.

The best thing about it is that you don't need to load the game, then connect, then load server browser (and you know how good DICE at making fast server browsers). You just click on the server and the game dumps you straight on the map.

I hope all EA's multiplayer games will feature this system in the future.

Not sure yet. You could edit them in-game in the Alpha and they confirmed there will be many more options to adjust in the final.

That sounds pretty good.

Changing in-game settings is actually a bit of a worry with me. I'm pretty notorious for spending 1-2 hours configuring my game properly when I first get into it. I hope it's easy to hop in between settings...

As long as it alt-tabs alright and doesn't screw up like BC2 did sometimes, I'll be fine with it. I do that a lot in steam anyway.

It seems all the configuration options will be in game once you launch it. That's up for speculation though. Once you got in game you would hit ESC to get graphics options to pop up. I imagine that will stay the same, and control options will be there too.

I don't see why they wouldn't let you tweak options before ever hitting into a game though from your PC. You shouldn't have any problems configuring the game for that 1-2 hours you spend here, even if the ones you want to tweak require you to close a game before the settings take place. Like stated before, closing out of games is just alt tab - close game button, and to relaunch a game is just as quick----maybe even faster if you use 1 server to go about it from your favorite server list and just use that one to keep going in and out.

Beta will be the time to see if the speed is even better than alpha about games loading up which I would wager will be improved.

I don't get what the issue with making an in-game interface is.

Make it so you can click on the BF3 icon from Origin and have a menu load up straight away. I'm sure they can work an in-game server browser into it. Why you need a browser is beyond me. The launch will be just as fast (if not faster) if it's in game. Just cut out all bloat.

If they're going to make you have Origin open all the time during the game, they might as well make it so that you can have a server browser in a overlay or something while playing the game so that you don't have to quit while changing servers.

well i certainly AM surprised.

by EA's decision to handle server browsing in this manner. it's almost as if you were expecting one thing, and then get something else entirely at the last minute. now you're questioning if you still want it or not.

I have a two display set up - I'll have Battlelog open at all times on one monitor and the game on the other.

Still wouldn't be annoyed if I had to quit and relaunch - it was relatively fast during the Alpha and will probably be polished even further for release.

If theres no in-game menu and everything is done through your browser, does that mean you couldn't get into a single player game without an internet connection? Or is there some kind of offline workaround?

funny enough it is there best server browser by a long shot, just weird how they essentially couldn't fit a web kit browser into origin/bf3 menu.

I don't know. To me, it seems that making a web-based server browser is a direct response to the fact that DICE can't code a working server browser that's worth anything.

Since BF2 (and probably BF1942, which I didn't play) their server browsers have been atrocious. They either don't update correctly, lock up the entire machine while pooling server ping values, display outdated information or simply don't work. Outsourcing it to the web makes it easier to update (it's all server-sided) and removes that from Dice's obligations.

Still, it's stupid as fuck.

At first my decision to stick with BF2 was driven by finances. Now it's driven by principles.
The browser in BF2 is awful. Even Netscape Navigator on a Pentium 3 would be an improvement. The only thing I ask for is an option to close my web browser after the game launches.

I went from "MAX EXCITEMENT!!!" for this game after the initial reveal and PC lead platform mumblings from DICE to "don't really care anymore" after all of the Steam/Origin bullshit, DLC plans, and pretty much every announcement surrounding Battlefield 3 in the last couple of months.

I can't believe I'm saying it, but I almost certainly won't be buying Battlefield 3 at launch.

Hey I remember ASE! I used it for a quite a while for several games; counter-strike and bf1942 being two of them. :P

Wierd to see it return after so many years.

I'm guessing there will be separate executables for single player and multiplayer.
There will likely be TWO entries in your Origin game library, similar to how Modern Warfare 2 lives in Steam.

Need a gif of chicken little making a mountain out of a molehill.

You answered it yourself, we're PC gamers and the game looks awesome. If we were PC Interface Luddites, then yeah, there might be a problem.

I'm excited about the game, everything around it / external stuff just pisses me off.
