Battlefield 4 Beta Thread: Prepare 4 Battle (Update to beta drivers)

What was wrong with BF3 beta for PC? Didn't get a chance to play it. Terrible performance like BF4?

The performance was OK, but it was buggy as hell and had some wierd animation placeholders and stuff like that. Beta and retail was like day and night. DICE stated several times that the beta was running on an older version of the game, which is probably the case with BF4 as well. They just want to look for small details that they might have missed.

Nope, I threw a kit to a couple of guys who were hurt and I didn't get any points.

Bummer, I used to rack up some insane points in Operation Métro with the healthpack. :P
Also, shit goes flying wildly when I just want to throw it at someone.

Hahahaha, that's true. "You're a medic, not a pitcher"

I've played a few rounds now in the beta on PlayStation 3 and it hasn't got me thrilled. I was going to take up the upgrade offer but, after playing the beta, I think I'll wait (for the PlayStation 4 release) - it's only a month (or so) after all.

The visuals are empty and bland - I feel 3 had a better atmosphere. When the dust covers everything it looks, well, horrid. The improved sounds are rather great, though, for some reason, everything is quieter. The on-screen information is big - it's in the way, frankly - fingers crossed that's just because of the lower resolution on the older console.

I really like the extra weight to your actions - it'll be bliss playing this with the higher framerate on the new consoles! The loadout screens are great, too - I really, really like seeing my kit and what it'll look like. The emblems are a nice touch. I much prefer the feel of the weapons in 4 to that of 3: much more weight in their use.

It's a shame, though, that the weapon selection is so limited (and stupid). I really hope this is changed for release! Each nation - as in 3 - should have a default set; I hate having to use the same stuff over and over. (Why is the AK-12 fitted with cherry furniture? Why have they chosen the likes of that Beretta?) The customisation options are way superior, mind - fucking awesome, in fact.

I've been on full servers playing Conquest but the action has been sparse - 32 players isn't cutting it anymore. Tanks don't seem to have the power of 3 - they remind me of the mediums in 1942. Sniping was much more fun than in 3 - I feel useful with a bolt-action rifle now, not limited. Still unsure about the easy access to the roofs on this map - again, the 32-player limit is stifling the action, I think.

Conclusion: this is just an average port - stick with 3 until 4 arrives for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

PS: Kinda tempted to return to the PC... (Last there with Battlefield 2 on an outdated machine.) If I win the lottery!...

PPS: Sorry if this post is too long...?

never understood the "war tapes" option. what is it?

makes explosions and mechanical noises clearer and more realistic. if you have surround sound or headphones its the best setting :D

The betas that Dice does with the BF games are always too close to release, with too little time to fix things meaningfully.

well the BF3 beta did have a lot of changes done to it before release, graphicswise there were touchups and they even removed vehicles etc. for balance.

I hated having the spot button as 'Back' on the 360 controller. You couldn't aim and spot at the same time.

Yes you could. Take your finger off move. This is exactly why spotting was better that way. Trade off movement while having ADS+Spot+Shoot. Now you have to take your finger off the trigger for two seconds to spot someone. Horrible.

You lean out slightly when you're close enough to corners and such, pressing left trigger edges you out further while aiming down sights.

Except there's no "rhyme or reason" to that system. It's pretty bad because I can see what they want to do there, but pressing against an Elevator door's "wall" to pop out and see if someone is there to surprise them while in cover isn't possible. Same for some corners. I'd rather they just drop it. Cover systems in shooters are just plain bad everytime I've seen them.

I have always felt that wartapes messed with my ability to hear footsteps in bf3

Yeah it definitely makes those sounds more "realistic" too so you cant really hear small personnel noises that well, especially around gunfire and explosions that muffle everything else.

So it's not for the pro-players :D but it does sound the best overall in my opinion.

yeah i had a lot of fun. the last few matches were intense lol. Cool pics too!

Nice pics. Game looks boring and sterile in simple map shots; it shines in action.

Yeah they really balanced that Metro map because of the BF3 Beta they did.

What I don't get is why the E3 build ran without these issues, what build did they bloody give us.

Played a couple quick matches on PS3 while my girlfriend tip tapped on the lapper. When I was done I commented on how crappy it looked, seriously looked like BF3 to me. Her response, and she is not even close to a gamer, was "yeah, it looks really bad. i wanted to ask you about it but didn't know if you paid for it."

Map was okay. I wish Rush had been offered in beta as I prefer it and may have been more apt to forgive how crappy it looks.

So pc people should we talk about recoil? To me it is the biggest change so far gameplay wise. I used the starting pdw all of last night so I could unlock the carbine. Had tons of fun playing engi, the rpg changes are awesome. Recoil wise all the weapons I have used so far have decent first shoot recoil but after that they are really easy to control. The carbine shoots like a damn laser beam, if it stays that accurate I could see it being hugely popular. PDWS seem more deadly too, I was doing real well with the starting one, even got some kills at range.

Pffft. Get gud. ;)

so what option is for pro-players? :D

Console player. I found Conquest a little empty. Domination is really fun. I hate the new tank controls. Some problems with the change of buttons between crouch and knife, but it seems is to standarize with other shooters. The helis are really responsive. The new running animation is great. How my soldier yells when he is shot is fantastic, I can feel the pain. I found the grenade icon a little too big. The new HUD is really sweet. Big numbers and letters and using so little space. Except for that cross below, but I think you can turn it off. The new battlelog (browser) is really good.

Few snaps I took from spectator mode.

what is wrong with the MK100, cant hit shit with that gun, unless you tap the trigger like cray cray

lol wut. That gun with it's default loadout from DICE is insane. No recoil. High damage.

Put it on full-auto, spray a dude until kill confirmed, aim at next dude, spray until kill confirmed, reload.

Wow those are absolutely beautiful. The removal of colour filtering makes everything look so much better.

I think the assual rifles and machine guns need more upwards recoil. Side to side seems about right. PDWs felt about right as well. Not a huge fan of the rfb, going to test out the mk11 today.

It's amazing how the altered firing sound alone makes the RPG so much more fun to use.

And it seems like it has way less drift. I fired three RPGs in a row at a tank across the river and hit almost the same spot every time. Now, why the hell the tank driver didn't move after the first one is beyond me :D

Looking at those shots, I can see why some people are unimpressed with the graphics. But they're still a step ahead of BF3's which looked damn good for 2011.

I don't think we're going to see a "graphical leap" in Frostbite for another good 2-3 years.

I admit I am sad thus far with the 360 graphics. I am buying next gen version and console, preordered last summer. However between this and GTA V our the 360 is just not able to keep up anymore. This gen is done.

This is probably the cringiest post I've ever read on neogaf

Hearing a lot of complaints about the new med kit. I don't think it can be used like the med bag. I thought you could toss it onto people to use, or they have to pick it up to use it. It doesn't auto-regen health, right?

Yeah, it's based on the low-recoil Ultimax 100. Seriously, it's ridiculous.

Im pretty sure the current gen final game graphics will be improved over the beta (they were from the BF3 beta to the retail release) but still, the maps feel a little empty on conquest since you have 24 players stretched out over such a huge map.

In the plus column though Im glad that suppression is gone for the most part. It doesn't feel like Im missing shots for BS reasons anymore. Although the hit detection still feels a little wonky at times.

For example, I saw a guy up on the road when I was down near the water and all I could see was his head...so I shot and hit him but it didn't register as a headshot. O_o.

BTW playing on the PS3 version

Jesus that's a big picture. How did you get that since Steam overlay breaks the beta right now.

And what FoV is that?

Used FRAPs to take it. Its 90 FOV, I'm surprised they let you do more in this game, I can basically see like a frog if I go up to 120 FOV

BF3 BETA was unplayable in PS3 (Bugs and stuff), hows BF4s ?

Well i suck at twitch gameplay and i run a noob 60hz monitor so I like to take every little advantage I can get

Right, they have to run over it. Like the ammobox. I think that's peoples problems with it.

DOS GRAFIXXXXXXX. D:

Otherwise minus pop-in and changed controls it plays fine.

Bf3 had pleanty of performance issues during its beta that were mostly fixed by release. I also remember a few mechanical changes between the beta for 3 and final release.

The net code hit detection issues are still present, but maybe not quite as bad. I don't thing I rubber banded any last night.

Regarding medics, the game still has the old style pack, I just don't think it's part of the beta.

Played it on my PC using an Xbox controller to get a feeling what next gen consoles on 64 player maps will be like, gents, it's going to fucking rock so hard. So, so hard.

taking on a helicopters on a skyscraper is rather fun, I'd say this map is 10x better then what BF3 has after addons as well.
