Beat em up's with depth.

The last 'classic' beat em up that I really enjoyed was Super Double Dragon. Having the ability to block and counter attacks blew my mind away and made pretty much all other beat em up's seem archaic and dull.

Any good beat em up's with combat depth( ie: more than a handful of moves/combos)?

I recall Street of Rage had some fighting game commands. River Street Ransom had a variety of ways to hurt people. Scott pilgrim and castle crashers suppose to be alright, but I never played those.

Any other notable that I should check out?

I recall there was a time where every fighting game has some 'beat em up' story mode or something, any of those good?

Guardian Heroes! It should be coming out on XBLA relatively soon, not sure of the date ATM.

Alien vs. Predator by Capcom. Nice juggling system, plus a huge move set for the time. Don't know if it's been re-released on any consoles.

Streets of Rage 3 is the pinnacle of beat em ups.It is easily the most engrossing beat em up ever made.

Not a Beat 'em up, going by how the OP is using the phrase. Marginally related to the games listed. (EDIT: Muramasa isn't either.) Personally prefer the term belt-scrolling to describe Streets of Rage and Final Fight-like games.

My personal favorite is The Punisher.

Was going to mention this. I remember seeing some youtube videos with people clearing levels without even touching the ground.

Question I've always wanted to ask-

When doing the special attack with Major, does he yell out "FUCK!"????

Better than the 3 titles that make up it. A love letter to the old school games

the Mugen of beat-em-ups. Nuff said.

Why God Hand should be excluded is pretty obvious, isn't it?

Uhh, no they are not. God Hand is a 3D beat em up. It's the best beat em up around.

lol.

3D Beat 'em up is a different genre, as 3D changes how a game plays. This is still true for the pseudo-3D nature of belt-scrolling games. If you want to open that floodgate there is no reason not to post Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, etc etc too.

Ragnarok Battle Offline

There are seven classes. The male and female of each class play differently, so it's like double the characters you can play. There's also a leveling system that gives you new skills as you level up. Three-player co-op on a single keyboard. Also better than Ragnarok Online in every way

Battle Circuit

Rushing Beat Shura

Dungeons and Dragons: Shadow Over Mystara

Sonic Blast Man 2

Sengoku 3

The Bouncer

DemolishFist

SpikeOut: Battle Street

Double Dragon (iOS)

Pick any one of these and you should be OK.

And co-sign on Urban Reign. Underrated classic. Best if played with 4 people.

Have played both God Hand and a game listed in this thread that isn't a 3D Action game?

EDIT: Do people not see that God Hand and, let's say, Onimusha or Ninja Gaiden are in the same genre? Talk about blind.

Considering the OP lists games like RRR, Scott Pilgrim and Castle Crashers, I'm assuming he/she is looking for beat-em-ups in the mold of Final Fight, SoR, etc.

If not, I recommend X-Men Legends 2. Most fun game from last-gen.

It's too good and has enough depth to shame every other title in the genre?
If it was just 3D beat em ups God Hand wins hands down, but with 2D factored in SoR 3 still beats it.

The best two that Capcom put out are definitely Alien vs. Predator and Battle Circuit, for reasons already stated.

Streets of Rage Remake is really fun, but it does feel kind of Mugeny at times. I still think it's one of the better beat-em-ups I've played, though.

Scott Pilgrim is pretty fun, but it's really sloppy (in terms of gameplay design, the art and music are great). I wouldn't recommend it to someone looking for a seriously intense beat-em-up.

god, this thing ate so much of my money at the local arcade. if it's ever been ported, ive never seen it.

also, if anyone's not yet played it, the Streets of Rage fan remake is like a whole other tier of fan work.

I don't know where to start with this post: The fact that you group Onimusha and Ninja Gaiden together or the fact that you don't think God Hand is a beat-em-up.

Sengoku 3

YES.

Also want to throw in:

Shadow Force

Easily one of the more unique entries as far as Belt Scroll games go, as it was one of the few of its that dared to go against the grain of being another who wanted to try and be like Final Fight. Plus, not only did your base character have a pretty sizable moveset, you could change into your enemies and use their OWN array of moves. Plus, by the time you got to some major boss battles, it was like playing a Vs. Fighter!

It's also Technos Japan's last game in their past form. They still live on through Million, but we'll probably never see unique titles such as this ever again...

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game. You can buy power ups and learn moves. Also the story is great.

If you have a PS2 (or PS2-backward compatible PS3) or an original Xbox:

Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks

Nice depth (combos, fatalities, multi-directional combat) and content (single player mode, 2 player coop with new areas, multiplayer mode, MKII-original arcade version, pictures, etc.)
