Bernie Sanders praises Trump for nixing Trans-Pacific trade deal

“I am glad the Trans-Pacific Partnership is dead and gone,” Sanders said. “For the last 30 years, we have had a series of trade deals — including the North American Free Trade Agreement, permanent normal trade relations with China and others — which have cost us millions of decent-paying jobs and caused a ‘race to the bottom’ which has lowered wages for American workers. Now is the time to develop a new trade policy that helps working families, not just multinational corporations. If President Trump is serious about a new policy to help American workers, then I would be delighted to work with him.”

Hilary was against the TPP too.

It's one of those things in which just because Obama was for it Trump would go against it anyway, so I guess that sort of worked out on that front.

99% of the stuff sanders says is 'fuck what trumps doing'

he would lose credibility if he didn't praise the things he's on the record agreeing with him on

Trump is interested in a new policy with his name attached to it. Big business wants this trade deal done, and with Trump it's going to get done. My guess is it will more or less be exactly the same.

That's consistent with what Bernie has been saying and smart politically. Make republicans understand that a socialist is liking what they're doing right now.

Of course he'd praise Trump for doing this.

Killing the TPP was one of Bernie's biggest campaign goals, him being happy of it being gone isn't a surprise.

This doesn't have anything to do with Dems being spineless.

Shh, you can't praise a bad person for doing a good thing. You have to praise obstruction against the people you disagree with, even if the party of obstructionists were doing it against your party of choice for the past 8 years.

Oh my god this forum and it's obsession with painting Bernie as some awful person for having the audacity to run against Clinton.

99% of what Bernie has said about Trump has been overwhelmingly negative, and he's talked far more post-election than Hillary has. The TPP has been something Bernie railed against long before Trump.

Lol.

Spineless Dems as usual.

Maybe do a little reading before posting?

Sanders is being consistent here.

You think he should oppose something he wants just "because Trump?"

In what reality is that logical?

Agree or disagree, at least Sanders has convictions and stands by them.

You prefer Bernie change his stance on the TPP just because Trump shares the same view?
Would have been nice if his statement was paired with pointing out how ridiculous Trump's statements on trade actually are. I don't separate Trump's stance on TPP and trade in general. So seeing him say he'd work with him, in light of what Trump was openly saying earlier today with those CEOs is a bit of a shame.

Nevermind.

You guys can give a pass to someone "delighted" to work with Trump. I won't.

Instead fight for all our rights that are in jeopardy and remind everyone at every opportunity who Trump and his cronies are.

Don't ever use "delighted".

We need Dems and Independents who aren't fucking pussies to stand up.

Just another reason Corby...er, Bernie lost his primary by millions of votes.

What, one of the primary reasons Trump won?

This is Sanders laying the trap for whatever godawful legislation comes down the line from the Republicans, since he can be seen to have attempted to take a constructive position.

At least now we have proof that Bernie Bros were Trump voters all along!

gonna look awful silly when Trump just makes a new "TPP" that's much worse

the only reason Trump's even against it to begin with is that it's a convenient target to rile people up because people know it's name

Bernie was against the TPP before anyone thought being against it was cool, including Hillary who once called it the "gold standard" of trade agreements until Bernie ran the primary campaign against her. The fact that Trump came out against it years later had nothing to do with Bernie.

A lot of people praise this from across the aisles but Free Trade agreements get a ridiculously bad rep. People get hung up on theoretical courts between corporations and countries as well copyright law, thats important to vocalize but the real utilization is duty mitigation. It allows US companies to sell to customers over seas with ease, which promotes production in our own borders. Axing free trade just ends up hurting the complex manufacturing that still remains in the US and benefits from Free Trade, like chemical production.

A lot of US manufacturing companies in the United States rely on NAFTA and were looking forward to the TPP in order to sell their products to countries besides ourselves. We can obviously still do that, but customers in those countries will look elsewhere to avoid the duty. For example, Japan brings in a ton of raw materials from my company and the TPP would have encouraged us to continue that production in the states. It will be easier to do so in south east asia now.

Im not an economist but I was a Free Trade Analyst for a decent while, so Im not talking 100% out of my ass.

I would have been completely fine with reworking the agreement, but cutting it down completely seems like a poor choice.

Bernie has been the single strongest voice of opposition to Trump in Capitol Hill for months.

just the idea someone would work with Trump to do some good has you frothing at the mouth. The next four years are going to be rough if this is your only position.

And this language indicates that he thinks he can play Trump like a puppy. Scold him when he's bad, give him rhetorical cookies when he's good. I think that's a bad fucking idea

Broken clock and all that. TPP wasn't good, hopefully they don't put in something worse.

Bernie keeps offering to work with Trump; would be interesting, but Trump seemed to use Bernie to win his voters undecided on Hillary and nothing else.
