"Although I share opposition to the specifics of TPP, we must take every opportunity to remember that President Trump's misguided and dangerous strategy for America's place in global trade will actively harm American families. Additionally his government, in the span of two short days, has demonstrated a troubling enthusiasm for the tools of petty authoritarian regimes, and we must question the motivations of any action his administration sets forth"
This would have been a preferable response imo. It's just a wasted opportunity to not tie Trump and his lack of understand on anything, in this case Trade, on all he does.

Yeah, Bernie says stuff like that pretty much on a daily basis. Of course our allies are not above criticism but him saying "delighted" in this context isn't something worth getting especially worked up over.

I think this is great.

The right attacked Obama on everything he did, I'd hope the left isn't as horrible as this to try and fuck over Americans just to spite Trump.

If he does something good then that's good for everyone.

Have you not been paying attention?

Has anyone in this thread? This is not a normal administration. Let Obama go. He is gone.

Focus. Jesus Christ. This is why the far right is dominating our lives.

Lol.

Spineless Dems as usual.

Nevermind.

You guys can give a pass to someone "delighted" to work with Trump. I won't.

Instead fight for all our rights that are in jeopardy and remind everyone at every opportunity who Trump and his cronies are.

Don't ever use "delighted".

We need Dems and Independents who aren't fucking pussies to stand up.

This right here is what I can't stand about the anti-trump stuff. It's not the sentiment of anti-trump- I am all for that, but people like you being this childish and ridiculous is going to cause the right to push back harder.

Bernie has stood strong by his convictions with TPP. What is spineless about him praising trump for this? He has openly criticized the fuck out of Trump, he's also made it clear he will try to work alongside Trump in order to try to essentially knock some much needed sense into the moron, but he will absolutely push back as hard as possible against his Misogyny and Racism. Trump is there now, and I know damage will be done, but I have hope people like Bernie and others can try their best to work with Trump rather than against him to try to sway him. Trump is one of the most petty individuals we've seen in the public space, he'll do things straight up to spite people. I think Bernie did the right thing here. Trump flip flops as much as anybody I've seen, I think it's clear he's easily manipulated. Hopefully people like Bernie can play a factor in his decision making.

Am I the only one getting a vibe from this post and others like it that there are people out there intentionally trying to stir shit up to keep people from uniting against trump?

"Yeah well LOOK AT THIS ordinary and menial action, you guys better argue internally about it and distract yourselves instead of organize and do something against trump"

Well, OP was a Trump supporter judging from his post history so you may be on to something. :p

YES. YES IT FUCKING DOES. TRUMP'S GOVERNMENT IS PRACTICALLY RUN BY NAZIS. NO-ONE SHOULD WORK WITH THEM ON ANYTHING

This is political theatre from Sanders. The Republicans are ideologically unable to put together a piece of legislation progressive enough for Sanders. This is a public attempt to show him trying to reach across the aisle, before the Republicans inevitably put out some hideous bill that he will publicly oppose as a "betrayal of the voters Donald Trump claims to represent".

He isn't actually going to turn into an arch-corporatist overnight.

People like Bernie will never have a factor in his decision making, and you can either accept that reality or not.

So after recent events, just in the last few days mind you, people like me are at fault? What I post on GAF will cause the right to push back harder???

Holy fuck I am done with the internet today. Have it it guys.

You missed out, America. Maybe in 2020 you'll pick a better candidate like Bernie. But the DNC will probably run another shitty corrupt politicians like Booker. We need Bernie/Warren 2020.

But yeah, TPP is shit. Trump has his silver linings. It's just unfortunate he's an Authoritarian Fascist.

It's hilarious that, after all we've seen, people still think this is possible.

Do you really want Bernie to be the latest dummy to make the embarrassing and ultimately fruitless trip up Trump Tower?

Trump isn't going to work with anyone that Republicans won't let him work with.

I hope that everyone here who is saying how happy they are that TPP failed is never going to complain about China abusing their power in foreign trade.

The whole point of TPP was to get China to agree to more ethical trade by forming a Trade Deal with a bunch of China's neighbors.

Were some parts of it bad? Yeah, but overall it could have been a REAL way to put a stop to some of China's bullshit.

Agreed. We're gonna had to ride this storm out till 2018.

we don't need Bernie/Warren 2020, there'll be plenty of fresh faces that show up in 3 years

what we need to do is make sure Trump brings the right down hard enough for us 'filthy socialists/communists' to start running the show

edit: repeated what a bunch of others have said so feel free to disregard or whatevs.

after the lack of principle displayed by mccain and rubio today I'm just glad that some people (he and warren) have actually stayed consistent to what they've been saying for ages and not tried to coat it with any bullshit spin. Even if I don't agree with all of what he has to say on the issue.

as long as he continues to oppose trump on nigh on everything else I'm ok with this. there are plenty of battles still left to be picked.

I don't think people realized that TPP wasn't replacing some better deal - there's no current deal in place at all. It was a chance to rein in China by establishing some rules and cutting down on companies stealing IP. It wasn't selling out American workers to China, it was an attempt to protect them.

Trump said he was against it because he thought we could negotiate a better deal, but he never specified what provisions he wanted changed or why.

Bernie's prepared to focus on policy, rather than just blindly denouncing everything Trump does because Trump. Full credit to him. It should be about policies rather than personalities. If you hate on everything Trump does including the good, you're hardly going to convert his supporters to your side.

And Bernie has been fiercely critical of the bad policy decisions Trump has espoused.

Trump literally didn't do anything though. This executive order was meaningless.

Well, honestly Bernie shouldn't be giving trump any praise over a meaningless executive order.

Someone's got to try and sweet talk their way into influencing him back to the left. I mean, if the approach works for Putin it might work for someone that Trump has already admitted to admiring on some level in Bernie.

End results. If the occasional pat on the head gets us even one more cookie out of Trump than we would have otherwise, it's probably worth it.

Plus the opportunities are going to be far and wide anyway. Proving that we put policy first and partisanship second, is good. So we probably want to take all the chances we can get, as they're going to be rare.

Bingo. Globalization is happening. US just made it real easy for China.

As for Bernie, his views are centered on white middle class. Namely men. So he still thinks this kleptocracy is negotiable.

Him and every other dem thinking that are gonna get people killed learning their lesson.

The next time Trump tries to pass something disgusting, Sanders will be at the forefront of the movement against it. It's completely pointless to get angry at Sanders just because he agrees with a single policy change.

Trump isn't going to work with anyone that Republicans won't let him work with.

I know that in my mind, but I also believe as many others do, that he is incredibly thin skinned and easily manipulated. I think people buttering him up is the best way to gain access to him. It won't play a huge factor, but I think at this point it's a better option then pissing him off, because I think it's clear he's motivated by that and will personally attack and remind you of what you did to him.

So after recent events, just in the last few days mind you, people like me are at fault? What I post on GAF will cause the right to push back harder???

I said people LIKE you feed the fire. The right in general is so dug in and set in their ways, but I think when somebody does something good, and you turn on that idea JUST because of who did it, it validates this notion that nothing will ever be good enough. Bernie is right here and I'm with Bernie. I personally think Trump did this for all the wrong reasons and likely will make it worse with a deal with his own name on it, but still this is a start and Bernie is being honest about it.

edit- and others have said, I expect Bernie to be incredibly vocal throughout this entire thing as he has been. Bernie will be right there the whole time pushing against him, but will praise him when he once in a great great great great while (once every 4 years?) makes a decent move.

TPP wasn't corporations taking over the US like the far left loved to claim. It was a trade deal that would have given the US more leverage to put a stop to some of China's bullshit.

Now that the deal has failed, China is stepping in to make their own version that will allow them to continue all their bullshit:

So you want Trump to have free reign? In order to defeat your enemy you got to control them and the first step is to work with them. If everyone turns their face fully away from him it would look terrible what he will do

I can't sit and watch people arguing that Sanders is nobly consistent when he's spent the last several months decrying "identity politics," but then had the stones to show up at the Women's March and give a speech about intersectional progressiveness because he saw which way the wind was blowing.

The claims from day one that this guy is somehow above politics really get under my skin. I liked his play to drag Clinton to the left at first, but now he's an earsore.

This is basically what I'm trying to say. My tag suits my I suppose, but I think it's the better road to take then just sticking your tongue out at literally EVERY action he takes, even if it's a good one.

Opposing TPP is a bad policy decision. Bernie should absolutely be criticized for this.

Who's side do you want to be on Obama and 99% of economists or on Trump's side?

So when Obama/Hillary tried compromising with the GOP, they were neoliberal centrist shills. But of course when Bernie does it, he's being a good politician willing to do what it takes to win over Trump's
deplorable

Thought Emoji Movie was good. Take that as you will.
Bernie's a socialist and ran on this stuff.

People just ignored and listened to free school/healthcare/etc...

Also funny that anyone in the GOP is against free trade, it's been a staple of there's for a LONG time.

In the long term, I think it's a bad move.. as I think free trade creates as many jobs as people think it loses.

Like on NPR today talking to beef producers who aren't happy with this move as it closes up rules that would have made selling beef in Asia easier to compete with Australia while hay producers are happy as it keeps the Japanese dairy market in tact that could have been weakened to due to decreased tariffs.

Look, Trump's got cultists lost in a miasma of personality. So does Bernie. So does Corbyn. As with most Liberal policy since the 70's the rest of us will have to negotiate the fragile egos of Bernie's purity-ponies to get anything of note accomplished. Fug'em

LOL Dem voters off to a good start too, I see. Bernie wanted TPP gone too!

And keep calling them all Deplorable and alienate them for the next two elections, instead of understanding them and flipping them back to blue.

Well this is the irony right? Trump has taken up two popular left-wing positions with regard to free trade and foreign intervention. It's pretty funny because it seems that in doing so, he pushed a lot of people on the left determined to disagree with him to the right on these issues.
