Bernie Sanders Is Not The Left

It seems "The Left" continues to eat itself.

https://newrepublic.com/article/149378/bernie-sanders-not-left
When CNN’s Jake Tapper asked Bernie Sanders on Sunday if he wants to abolish the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, the senator was uncharacteristically vague. “I think that what we need is to create policies which deal with immigration in a rational way. And a rational way is not locking children up in detention centers or separating them from their mothers,” he said. “What we need is Trump to sit down with members of Congress and work on a rational program which deals with this serious issue.”

Sanders wasn’t the only potential 2020 presidential candidate on Sunday to refuse to endorse the abolition of ICE. “There’s no question that we’ve got to critically reexamine ICE and its role, and the way that it is being administered, and the work it is doing,” Senator Kamala Harris of California said on NBC’s Meet the Press. “And we need to probably think about starting from scratch.” But Sanders’s reticence was more surprising to his supporters and other liberals.
“Come on man!” wrote Splinter news editor Jack Mirkinson. “Let’s hope that the next person who gets the chance asks him why he is still taking such a weak and morally timid position on ICE.” Jeremy Scahill, co-founder of The Intercept, wrote that “Sanders is choosing to be on the wrong side of history on this issue.”

Never thought I would see Sanders on the wrong side of history.

This follows the same pattern as Stalin's Soviet oppression of the Russian people. "You're no longer toeing the party line? To the gulag with you".

It's scary to watch. Democrats, what's going on over there?

Disbanding ICE is another stupid talking point by Democrats that just throw things at a wall and sees what sticks.

“Let’s hope that the next person who gets the chance asks him why he is still taking such a weak and morally timid position on ICE.” come the fuck on. we have to get away from this black and white with us or against us attitude, its nonsensical.

The Democratic party looks a lot like the GOP did a few years ago. No message, no platform outside of 'we hate this guy', nothing positive. I'm NPA but am usually left on most issues and tend to vote Democrat but they've steadily but surely made me feel like I'm not 'progressive enough' because I dare try to understand what people I disagree with are saying rather then shout them down and deplatform them. The Democrats are doing more to disenfranchise me than Republicans ever have.

Abolishing ice is one of the dumbest things Democrats have ever backed, and in this day and age that's saying a lot.

I cant even articulate just how ignorant and downright assinine that position is, and how deeply unpopular it is so simply stating it is a losing fight should be enough.

Someone let me know when the democratic party comes back to their senses.

So he's calling for Congress to sit down and have rational discussions like an adult.

Have you ever watched the congressional meeting on cspan? The democrats act like spoiled children and do nothing but play on emotions. They totally lost it when their goddess failed to win the election - something they still can't get over.

I would have voted for Sanders over Trump in a heartbeat. He isn't a looney bin liberal like some of these are. Like, disbanding ICE is an awful suggestion. And, I laugh everytime they say "well they are imprisoning brown kids". No, they are turning over children of arrested people who tried to illegally enter the country or did illegally enter the country to the DHS who is detaining them as so (mostly because if they don't detain them they lose track of them completely and/or they could end up in child trafficking rings).

Disbanding ICE is a crazy idea.

It seems like every day people who used to consider themselves left wake up and realize that the goal posts have been moved and they are now considered centrists or dreaded alt righters.

Democrats are acting worse than Republicans acted about Obama, oh the irony.

It's pretty clear that the way both sides operate is the President only "counts" if he's part of your party, otherwise they're fair game for any sort of hate or disrespect.

Is this a democrat talking point now? They must really like not winning elections

Open borders and millions of immigrants flooding in with no regulation or vetting! Vote for me!

Sander's is trying to reinvent the left. Let's be honest, his supporters aren't from the right.

For as much as I hate his platform (extremely), he at least HAS a platform. All the current left knows is minorities and women are oppressed and only chaos will fix it.

Huh since when Left means open borders ?
Left means mostly caring for workers and low income families and grand narratives like healthcare for all etc.

This is the problem with having this only be two sides. The Left isn't a single entity, just like The Right isn't. Of course not everyone on the left is going to agree with Bernie Sanders, just like not everyone on the right is going to agree with Trump.

I'd just seen a video about this and thought it was hilarious. The left is pretty much destroying themselves it seems like these days.

Wrong side of history? What are you talking about? Every country on Earth has Customs. Just because the US currently has fucked up, racist immigration policies doesn't mean we need to abolish our Customs department. Sanders is exactly right, we need legislation and policies that make sense, we don't need to start crippling basic functions of government.

what doesn't get communicated in the "Abolish ICE" message isn't that they dont want immigration/customs enforecement. ICE didn't exist before 2003, and INS had oversight in the Justice Department.

ICE is more like Border Patrol, except not at the border. It really hasn't shaken out the way it should have.

the message should have always been "Reform ICE" -- but essentially the same thing that is wanted with the current "Abolish ICE" message. "Abolish ICE" is a stronger message, though.

Reform ICE to what? Something so small and ineffective it's practically non-existent? INS investigated and deported people just like big, bad ICE does.

I appreciate the far left saying "Abolish ICE". I would prefer they be honest about their dumb ideas than playing footsies and coy like they currently do with open borders and amnesty

the culture within the agency needs to be broken. you replace the existing agency with something else, with stricter rules and none of the pre-existing culture, you get a different result.

it's not rocket science. that's what reform is. you reform an agency into another agency that accomplishes the same task, with the intent of improving it.

Oh replace the "culture". I guess ICE needs to be nicer and more considerate of people who break our laws, import drugs and run sex trafficking rings, etc etc...

This is such nonsense. Nothing is wrong with ICE besides them doing a job that Democrats don't want them to do. The Dems can't change the law, so they will just handicap the people enforcing it.

I think that's exactly what they want. No borders, no nations, fuck your deportations is a common protest slogan among the alt left.

At least 19 Immigration and Customs Enforcement investigators are seeking to dissolve the agency, concerned that the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal migrants has limited their ability to pursue national security threats, child pornography and transnational crime.
If that is their word for real then it is really dumb. They are apparently our front line of defense against these things and they want to dissolve themselves in place of nothing simply because they don't like the current administration? That seems highly counter productive. Things are heated cause a small portion of the Democratic party is targeting them.

Even ICE agents want to get rid of ICE.

Agents Seek to Dissolve ICE in Immigration Policy Backlash

At least 19 Immigration and Customs Enforcement investigators are seeking to dissolve the agency, concerned that the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal migrants has limited their ability to pursue national security threats, child pornography and transnational crime.

https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/4562896-FILE-3286.html

the headline to the story is misleading like they want to abolish the agency. the actual letter is in the news article, they want to drop the blanket term ICE which consists of multiple branches the ERO (Enforcement and Removal Operations) and HSI (Homeland security Investigations) which according to the letter already somewhat operate independently to be two separate entities.
