Best 3 / Worst 3 Call of Duty Campaigns

My Favs:

COD4: Modern Warfare
Call of Duty 2
Black Ops 2

Least Favs:
Black Ops 3 (disappointing :( I really enjoyed Blops 1 and 2)
Call of Duty 3
Ghosts (I didn't hate this campaign, just near the bottom tier

Best:

1. Modern Warfare
2. Modern Warfare 2
3. Call of Duty 1

Worst:
1. Black Ops 3
2. Call of Duty Finest Hour
3. Call of Duty 2 Big Red One

What was bad about Modern Warfare 3's campaign? It's the only one of the trilogy that I haven't played.
Waaaay too many set pieces that will make Michael Bay blush, but aside from that, I don't remember the level design being terrible. Probably got a lot of flak for being more of the same during a time where everyone was tired of the formula.

I actually enjoyed the ending.

I might as well just rank them all in that case, from best to worst:

1. COD 4
2. Black Ops
3. COD 2

4. Black Ops II
5. Modern Warfare 2
6. Advanced Warfare
8. Modern Warfare 3
9. World at War
10. COD
11. Ghosts
12. COD 3
13. Finest Hour
14. Big Red One
15. Black Ops III

Black Ops 3 is the worst I've played though the people defending it with the "twist" made it slightly more enjoyable. They should've gone with Troy Baker again.

Let's goooo:

Best
COD2- I put this up in here because when I think of the quintessential above and beyond the CALL OF DUTY experience, this game sells it even better than the rest of the series did after it (even 4 to an extent). This was the chaos of WWII all around you and you were right in the meat-grinder. No, we don't get anything on par with the bigger moments of COD1 (i.e. the Russian campaign), we still have our car chases, Rhine crossing, and D-Day catastrophe happening on screen to the point when it became overwhelming you were thankful you didn't have to fight this bullshit in real life. COD2 takes a step up from the original with regenerating health and really sells the slogan of "No one fights alone" better than the CODs that came after it.

COD4- Despite being initially skeptical pre-beta, COD4 kept what made COD2 great and expanded on it through both the multiplayer and campaign. Through both modes in this single game alone it not only infected the rest of the series, but video games to this very day are still trying to capture aspects of it and make it great on their own with little success. The story mode blew everyone away (lol) with it's unforeseen treatment of the player along with the game's many political statements about US Foreign Policy and Nuclear Proliferation. It took the set-pieces and house cleaning of the previous titles and brought it into the more familiar modern world and still holds the best final act of the series with the momentum moving from level to level as the tension rises at each turn. Yeah, you're still saving the world, but the grounded nature of it feels less ridiculous than what came after it. It was also the last COD where the player was treated as they should be: be quiet and let the professionals handle it until we need you. You were still SAS and 1st Recon, but that never felt like the clumsy "Super awesome squad unit" that we fill in for the rest of the series. Even in the incredible "All Ghillied Up" you're still the guy who follows orders and is only called upon when things go wrong. And even then you're still taking orders. There's a certain "reality" (lol again) that this game had that even its sequel lost and that's why COD4 will remain one of the best, if not the best, in the series.

BOII - Almost tied with Black Ops which was truly a mindfuck (even if a bit predictable), but BOII's campaign added so much more by giving the player agency in the story through choices and decisions (not all of them obvious and none with obvious foreseeable outcomes, either). Standout villain, multi-generational story with player input, fun characters and most important of them all: FUN to play. For both historical and future sections, neither were limited by the time period and allowed for great set-pieces. Don't get me wrong, it's still silly and the Freudian excuse for the villain is super weak (mainly because it feels like we jumped between the defining incident in his life to how he's suddenly a megalomaniac), but it was far more entertaining than it had any right to be.

Worst
BOIII - Fuck this piece of shit, I cannot believe the same studio that made WAW-BOII made this horrid campaign. Yes I get it, but you know what COD had a great plot-twist moment and didn't need an entire Reddit community to figure out? Black Ops.

Ghosts - The dog was the best part, maybe next to Rourke, anyways, who was also the only dude who seemed like he was having fun in the story mode. God damn, the campaign was so lame, I mean now we can say it was better than BOIII, but that still doesn't take away from how dull the environments, story, characters, and levels were. The only parts I remember being genuinely thrilling were the tank assault and the prologue mission in space. The mid-credits ending made my eyes roll so far back I could see where exactly in my mind the game's narrative was rotting my brain.

MW3 - Honestly, while I'd place it as the bottom of the worst 3, it's the biggest offender for me due to how... average it is. MW2 brought some innovation or at the very least more creative set-pieces and events in the campaign. There wasn't very much new in the campaign that wasn't already done before. It felt like everything was recycled. The story was really middling as well for a plot was really leading up to WORLD WAR 3 in MW2 and here we are, MW3 and in the first two missions America repelled the attacks? Why? Isn't the common thread across both COD4 and MW2 supposed to be America getting spanked because it keeps making dumbass decisions? It played "Murica Fuck Yeah!" straight (as DELTA FORCE of course) and it's mind boggling. Even the god damn point of MW2 was about the dangers of nationalism and patriotism (as demonstrated by both Shepard and Makarov) and yet here with MW3 there's no semblance of a message beyond "The Will of a Single Man, bro" which ends up being both contested against and played straight by both parties. Then we have fucking YURI. I don't give a rats ass about this dude. Game should've had you in the shoes of Soap to bring it all full circle (as the game wasn't shy about referencing or bringing back COD4 characters and events, which was admittedly cool). Ultimately, MW3 is a serviceable campaign, it's honestly not anywhere near being terrible compared to Ghosts and Black Ops fucking III, but it hurts to see this being the campaign that follows up COD 4 and MW2 and doesn't bring much to the table, and at worst, ends up being the very identity that COD up to 4 tried to escape. A mindless shooter where 'Murica, bros, and sub-tier Micheal Bay action replace any potential the campaign could've had to make this one of the best trilogies in gaming.

It's a sad life playing COD for the campaign.

One of my biggest gripes with MW3 was the direction it went in. At the end when your standing on top of the White House and the line of "When do we go to Moscow?" To which Foley responds with "Soon enough and we'll burn it down when we get there" got me amped.I was expecting the gang of Ramirez, Dunn, and Foley to comeback but all we got of them in MW3 was a cameo on a debrief screen. Playing as the Delta team was cool but it felt like something was missing.

Best:

1) CoD4: classic, and well grounded and serious. Not the joke of a campaign it turned into with the latest iterations)

2) WaW: 4 player co-op, intense WWII combat. It was very well made.

3) Black Ops 1 I guess.

Best 3 for me these are all rated as the best overall package, despite certain parts of the game being better in some places rather than others.

1) Call of Duty 2- just played this a month ago and it was still as fun as ever, I love how you are just a run of the mill soldier in this and not some super elite special ops best of his class guy who can slow-mo door breakthroughs like no tomorrow. When the narrative had had to be altered to explain why the guy you play is an invincible mass murdering badass, it moved away from what made the games special.

2) Call of Duty 4- The second one I played on the Xbox 360 after COD2 and I was astounded. This game brought the tense nail biting war theatre into the modern day, respecting the traditions of just being a soldier but at the same time showing how a Spec Ops shooter would operate when their back was against the wall and all hell breaks loose. I am seriously considering caving into Infinite Warfare Legacy edition just to play it with better graphics. Also the multiplayer represented the first time I ever got into mutliplayer and I have not looked back. To this day it remains my most played online game ever.

3) Call of Duty: MW2- Now to preference this, the decline of single player into Michael Bay action schlock started with this one. A war story was turned into an action movie, filled with cliches and TWISTS you don't see coming (but you do) because the story had to raise the stakes and be the second act in a "trilogy". That being said the Single player was still a lot of fun to play because the gameplay was so damn addicting and satisfying, laser precision weapons and unique locations (which were obviously picked before the narrative links could tie them together) added variety and fast paced action to it. The multiplayer was kinda a love/hate relationship with the game. It was fast and it was damn satisfying but, it was littered with problems and frustrations. I got awful unplayable lag for a week before I could play it properly without it crashing and it kind of set the stage for the rest of my playtime. The excellent maps from the first one were replaced with infinite sight lines from every corner, and there was a fuckton of infuriating BS. You could be on top of the world in one match, immediately followed by a rage inducing one-man army noobtube-athon, MLC legit pros dudes knifing you from 10 yards away or spawning right under the out of control killstreaks. The IW lawsuit and exodus really hurt this game as every glitch and exploitation was followed with the community rampantly abusing it, and it took literally weeks to patch it. I started loving it but was eventually had to stop playing it. It was still third best for me still as it provided a lot of fun with friends, I joined 2 gaming communities through it and it was the last one I was really into.

Worst Three Cods, rated by overall disdain towards them:

1) Call of Duty 3: To start it off I think Treyarch literally performed a miracle with this game, they made a full fledged sequel from single player to multiplayer across 5 platforms (Xbox, 360, PS2, PS3, Wii) in eight months while simultaneously working on other projects. That being said, coming off Big Red One, this game was awful. My issues lie in early Treyarch COD shenanigans with bad hit detection, wonky framerate, bad hit registration for objects where you could be shot through cover and the story was just outright filled with forgettable and terrible characters. Big Red One was filled with a unique and well written squad, and being that you are fighting the war with this squad from Africa all the way into Germany over three years means you really got attached to them. When a squadmate died there was absolutely nothing you could do about it, you just had sit there and watch and proceed forward as the germans were coming down on you and it was a very crappy feeling. When your squadmates die in COD3 I couldn't give a fuck about any of them. The only that was compelling was Cpl Dixon, he was leader and looked out for his squad. The previous sergeant was an ass and dies in "EPIC CUTSCENE" and the guy who replaces Dixon just bitched the whole game and they made him the Sergeant..fuck me. It was interesting to see the Polish and Canadian sides of the war but the missions were less than stellar and pretty forgettable. Polish missions especially. Didn't have Xbox live back then so I have no idea how the multiplayer played out.

2) Call of Duty Ghosts: EWWWW!

3) Call of Duty World at War (DS) version
I liked the console version so this one was going to be good right? Oh boy was I wrong! Just a clunky and uninteresting shooter. The mediocre Brothers in Arms DS game was vastly superior.

The only CoD campaigns I've completed are the 3 MW games and WaW, so I'll just rank those from best to worst.
CoD 4
MW2
WaW
MW3

One of my biggest gripes with MW3 was the direction it went in. At the end when your standing on top of the White House and the line of "When do we go to Moscow?" I could've traded away Delta for the Army Rangers in a heartbeat. Those characters worked off each other so much better than what'stheirnames in MW3. Dunn and Foley were good, and their melodrama added a lot to the American Invasion. MW3 should've seen them in battle taking Russia.

"When the time's right gentlemen... when the time's right."

Best:
1. Advanced Warfare
2. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
3. Modern Warfare 2 (No Russian is still super lame though)

Worst:
1. Black Ops 3
2. Call of Duty 3
3. Black Ops 2 (I really liked some parts of the future missions at least)

Ghosts is nowhere near my worst 3. While it's pretty mediocre overall, it features two of the absolute best COD missions back-to-back (Legends Never Die, Federation Day). Modern Warfare 3, with all it's recycled assets and on-rails sequences, also features a few great missions that preclude it from making the bottom 3.

Seeing people rate BO3 worse than Ghosts worries me. I'll be playing it this summer and I can't fathom anything being worse than Ghosts (mind you I never played CoD3).

1. Modern Warfare 2
2. Modern Warfare
3. Advanced Warfare
4. Black Ops
5. Call of Duty 2
6. Modern Warfare 3
7. Ghosts
8. Black Ops II
9. World at War
10. Call of Duty 3
11. Black Ops III (only campaign I never finished, it was just awful)

COD3 had a pretty good intro and outro levels. Plus, dat Joel Goldsmith score.

BOIII doesn't even have that.

I actually really like Moden Warfare 3. Amazing final shot for the close of the series (the cigar!), and some really fun missions. You can't tell me that the submarine scuttle, disintegrating airplane or sandstorm in Africa weren't great setpiece levels. That shit was cool!

Best Campaign
- Modern Warfare 2
- Black Ops 1
- Black Ops 2

I think MW1 is really good. Don't get me wrong but BO1 and BO2 hit the right tone for me more. I really enjoy the MW trilogy. I don't think MW3's campaign is bad at all. It's really out there but given what the 2 did it was kinda par for the course. I can understand why some would rank it low though.

Worst Campaign

- Black Ops 3

There are very few CoD campaigns I think are bad. Some are more average then bad. BO3 holds a special place though because of how far it fell compared to past games especially after BO1 and BO2. I get what they were trying to do but I don't think they managed to pull it off. I also don't like feeling like I wasted my time. It's hard to list other campaigns along side it.

Best
1. United Offensive
2. 2
3. Modern Warfare 2

Worst
1. Call of Duty 3
2. Ghosts
3. Modern Warfare 3

Secret best COD game.

My list:

Best:

1.United Offensive
2.Modern Warfare
3.Tie between COD 2 and MW2

Worst:

1.COD 3
2.MW3 (I might be being too harsh, I haven't played it since it came out)
3.Black Ops 3

Bear in mind that I haven't played a few of them. (Ghosts/AW/the Xbox/PS2 ones)

Original Modern Warfare/2/Black Ops 1 for me.

BLOPS 1 had a lot of missteps, but Treyarch tried plenty of cool stuff that was interesting. And the way they mucked around with the menu and being strapped into an interrogation chair, the easter eggs lying around, that was fun.

Advanced Warfare and United Offensive just outside the favourites.

Seeing people rate BO3 worse than Ghosts worries me. I'll be playing it this summer and I can't fathom anything being worse than Ghosts (mind you I never played CoD3).

Ghost I feel at its worst is bland and maybe really safe. There isn't really anything offensive about it I think. Where as with BO3 I feel there are big issues with narrative and actual design.. I don't remember CoD 3 to be honest. I think I played it but there is a good chance I didn't. I know I didn't play Advance Warfare so can't comment on that game either.

Best
1. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
2. Call of Duty
3. Modern Warfare 2

It's kind of hard to place COD, COD:UO, and COD 2 here. It's been so long since I've played them, but I think the original deserves a slot for the wow factor at the time. It really was a jump up in the single-player FPS experience when it released. But really the slot is more for that pre-MW IW era, I might replay these in the near future and have a more concrete opinion.

Worst
1. Call of Duty 3
2. Call of Duty: Black Ops III
3. Call of Duty: Black Ops

Hot take, Ghosts and MW3 were perfectly cromulent campaigns that I would happily replay.

I know lots of people really loved Black Ops so I'll expand on my position a little. I thought the plot was stupid and the set pieces weren't that interesting. The last mission was incredibly lame as well. The only redeeming feature for me was the AMERICA FUCK YEAH looking scene at the end. Black Ops II was the only Treyarch COD I liked for single player. III was complete crap but the co-op campaign was good for some laughs at least, and it had Ben Browder and Katee Sackhoff which kind of hurts, because I would have loved to have had them in a COD game I really liked.

Call of Duty 3 wasn't just the worst COD campaign, but it is also in contention for worst single player game I played to completion.

Best:
1. CoD 4: MW
2. CoD AW
3. CoD 2

CoD 4's single player was one of the top 5 best SP FPS campaigns ever so this is a no brainer. Advanced Warfighter was the most fun SP of the last few years though Blops 1 and 2 were also a lot of fun. CoD 2 because of that awesome bunker on the hill level.

Worst
1. CoD 3
2. BLack Ops III
3. Ghosts

CoD 3 and Ghosts are the only SP that i never felled compelled to finish. CoD 3 did have a pretty good MP setup, while Ghosts had the absolute worst multi in my view. Black Ops III's campaign was just so appallingly bad, it boggles the mind. I'd rather it have been forgettable and bland rather than just something that made me feel bad for the actors.

I haven't played CoD since BO2, so I can't really say. I generally liked most of the ones I've played at least in some respects. UO, 1, and 2 have the best campaigns, though.

Call of Duty 3's bad campaign really sucks, because the multiplayer was some of the best they ever made, and a lot of people didn't try it.

Yep. It managed to balance having tanks in a CoD MP.

Didn't the WIi version of CoD3 try waggle for the QTEs? I will admit that I kind of liked the det charge QTE, at least on 360.

Best 3
Modern Warfare
Call of Duty 2
Advance Warfare

Worse 3
Black Ops 3
Call of Duty 3
Modern Warfare 3

I actually really enjoyed Ghosts

Best:

1) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
2. Call of Duty: Black Ops
3. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Worst:

1) Ghosts
2) Call of Duty 3
3) Call of Duty: Finest Hour

Waaaay too many set pieces that will make Michael Bay blush, but aside from that, I don't remember the level design being terrible. Probably got a lot of flak for being more of the same during a time where everyone was tired of the formula.

I actually enjoyed the ending.
Iron Man suit Price made me go "are you fucking kidding me", but strangling Makarov at the end was satisfying as fuck.
