Best (and worst) Shotguns in gaming

I still think one from original Doom is the best shotgun in all games i played.
Second would be one from Quake 3 Arena.
Saiga 12g from Battlefield Bad Company 2 was also amazing.

The best is Unreal Tournament's Flak Cannon

latest

I don't know if this is classed as a shotgun, if it is then it gets my vote.

This is easily the Gnasher. While there are other games with shotguns that have equally impressive and satisfactory hit feedback (like Doom's double barreled), no other game has a shotgun that is so integrated into the gameplay and game design, and has such a satisfactory hit feedback at the same time. It also does headshots and Gears has amazing headshot feedback, what's more is that due to the active reload mechanic it feels amazing to even reload it. It's the synergy of all these different elements that make the Gnasher so amazing.

Also this one for Postal just for the reload animation :P

I love when you get the first shotgun in RE4. Right after you see the chainsaw guy for the first time then you have to run up stairs and break it out of the glass. Best shotgun moment

Lots of good candidates for best shotgun, most have already been mentioned.

On the bad side, you get a shotgun in one of The Evil Within DLC episodes, and it was terrible.

FEAR wins. FEAR 2 might win worst shotgun, not because it's particularly bad, but just because it's such a disappointment after the first game's shotgun. It's just a typical video game shotgun instead of the unstoppable dismemberment cannon of the first game.

I have to mention Killing Floor 1 and 2's shotguns as well. They all feel amazing to fire and reload, have some decent range, and do a good job turning enemies into chunky bits.

Eh, the new game has decent shotguns but they are nowhere near the original Doom shotgun. The double barrel does have a a nice dynamic if you rapidly switch weapons with hotkeys and use it to finish things off.

Having recently finished another playthrough of RE4, I gotta go with the fully-upgraded Striker with
the 100 round capacity
.

It's all you need.

Even though The Order 1886 wasn't a super solid game, the Three Crown Coach shotgun in the game was pretty damn fun and visually impressive to use.

+1
This thing is a beast.
Man I'd love to get back into Warframe if I could carry my progression from PS4 to PC. Have so much and it's pains me to start from scratch.

Old: Fear shotgun

Halo combat evolved shotgun

New: Legions "burst shot" Titanfall 2.

If that doesn't count then the Mastiff. It's a Laser shotgun than can snipe. It's projectiles have mass so if you manipulate gravity with say a gravity star you can curve burst around corner/walls using the gravitational pull. Cheeky...and oh so fun.

DOOM Double barrel

Don't know if I'd call it the best, but I have a lingering fondness for the Halo 2 shotgun. There was something satisfying about coming around a corner and pumping someone in the chest that hasn't quite been topped for me.

Well one of the first awesome shotgun kill I had was the first RE...turning around in a panic, aiming high and pulling the trigger for a perfect one bullet headshot kill on the Zombie, he was so close, was great. This all happened because of those tank controls and a change of screen lol.

I've always had a fondness for the shotgun from Half-Life 1.
The meatiness and devestating power of the double-barrel shot made it a joy to use.

Prepatch akimbo M1887s got me many a hatemail back in the day.
I think Akimbo 1887's fit both category. They were horribly OP but they felt so satisfying to use, not just because of how great they were but because they sounded good, looked good, had a great reload animation.

My most-hated shotgun is the Gnasher. I'm not good with one, which might color my opinion a bit, but I also dislike the type of game a Gears MP match becomes when everyone is wall bouncing with Gnashers.

Roadhog's (Overwatch) Scrap Grun is a fun tool to use. The primary fire acts like a standard shotgun blast, but his alternative fire shoots out a projectile that explodes and shoots out a cone of pellets. Basically, firing this projectile at an opponent's head can instantly kill softer targets if all of the pellets are headshots, and even bodyshots can be deadly if they all land. Combine that with his hook, and you can really start cookin'!

I personally love how the gun looks when you equip his Junkenstein's Monster or Mako/Sharkbait skins, but the default look is pretty sexy.

Someone already posted that amazing gif, but RE2's shotgun with the upgrade gets my vote.

Worst shotgun probably goes to Doom 2016's regular shotgun, specifically in the late-game. Your not even using the shotgun part anymore, just the rocket attachment. It's obvious that the game wanted the Super to be your go to shotgun for the late-game.

I listed that above as my worst :p Maybe it's just that the MP5 is overpowered for an SMG, but the shotgun feels like a pea-shooter compared to what I expect shotguns to do at close range.

Really? I used the regular shotgun through the end of the game even on Nightmare difficulty. If your combat style is heavy on agility then the regular shotgun is much better than the super for close range combat. The forced reload after every shot makes the super almost unusable for me in regular combat, aside from using it as a finisher on bigger enemies. I guess that's one of the great things about Doom 2016, you have a broad range of gameplay style options between all the different weapons/runes/etc.

I'm surprised to see that the overkill hasn't received any love yet, but maybe that's because no one has played Gears 4.

It's an incredibly satisfying auto shotgun that gibs enemies like no one's business.

The shotgun in Perfect Dark was so fucking terrible. Like, the worst gun in the game.

Came here to post this. The weapon sandbox in Goldeneye and Perfect Dark remain some of the best in gaming to this day, but they both have terrible shotguns. No oomph at all.

I love RE4. I hate all of its shotguns. The riot gun and the striker are like bullet sneezes. They're so unsatisfying and barely even stop the enemies. The regular shotgun is pretty good, but later in the game it doesn't do enough damage. So it knocks them back without keeping them down.

I have played RE4 more than any other game I've ever owned, and if I could change one thing about it, it would be its shotguns.

OP is right, FEAR's shotgun is an absolute monster and my personal favourite. I enjoyed Wolfenstein TNO's full auto one as well, even if the sounds sucked. The sounds sucked for almost all the guns in that game though.

Titanfall 2 had a good one - that automatic one felt pretty satisfying iirc.

Nothing can touch FEAR's though in my opinion.

Rainbow 6 Raven Shield has the best shotguns because they have realistic spread and because you can shoot doors open with them. Popping open a door and then immediately shooting the terrorist behind it is the best.
