Best (and worst) Shotguns in gaming

Best

Never used the default shotgun again after I got this
Fuuuuck completely forgot about scattergun

Getting the right meaties is so satisfying

Basically your primary weapon for the second half of the game. The only good way to blow Flood to pieces.

Yep. With a shotgun and a pistol you were basically unstoppable. Makes The Library into a cakewalk, and it was even effective, if not ideal, at mid range to stumble groups of enemies.

And then they nerfed it to all hell in Halo 2. Never has the shotgun reclaimed its former glory (although it at least feels meatier in later games.)

And to contrast with not great ones:

I hope they add a hero with a great feeling shotgun.

Reaper shoots too fast and they feel wimpy, Roadhog doesn't feel perfect either.

Just a hero with a shotgun that feels like a real ass gun, no longer range alt fire, no dual wielding gun-kata, just a powerful gun that you feel when you fire.

Like if Soldier 76 is CoD man, they should add a Doomguy. Simple abilities, but a (shot) gun that's effective and satisfying to shoot people with.

This is easily the Gnasher. While there are other games with shotguns that have equally impressive and satisfactory hit feedback (like Doom's double barreled), no other game has a shotgun that is so integrated into the gameplay and game design, and has such a satisfactory hit feedback at the same time. It also does headshots and Gears has amazing headshot feedback, what's more is that due to the active reload mechanic it feels amazing to even reload it. It's the synergy of all these different elements that make the Gnasher so amazing.

Yeah the Gnasher from Gears is my pick for best. That thing is incredible.

Mafia 2 had some good shotgun mechanics. It actually works at a decent range like a real shotgun, at least.

A lesser favorite, (and polarizing in online play)
Rainbow Six Vegas / Vegas 2

Mostly because it was realistic. Shotguns don't have a limited range of 10 feet. Some can go up to 50 yards of max effective range. Most players aren't used to this, as it breaks normal gaming conventions and you'd see people getting sniped by shotgunners left and right. It was always so satisfying to do.

Fast paced multiplayer games rarely have impactful weapons, it's a product of the purpose of the game. I can't think of a single really great feeling shotgun in a high speed, high reflex team shooter.

The only one I can really think of is Quake or Unreal but even those while having visceral shots didn't feel like they were impactful in your hands/animation because of balancing for MP stuff.

People might say Battlefield or something but while hectic I don't see the as the same type of games as the ones I'm talking about. It's a slower game.

I would have to say the double barrel from Red Steel 2 is pretty up there.
Worst has gotta be the shotgun from goldeneye, right? At least the worst in an otherwise good game.
No, the worst is posted above as reaper. I'm not usually one for caring about recoil but a shotgun needs some sort of kick.

Gotta give some love to Brutal Doom. Both the single and super shotties are so damn satisfying to use.

Not so good: Doom 3's shotgun. The animations are fine, but the range is about 2 feet. Surely it's done on purpose to fit with the claustrophobic feel of the game, but it would also make the game far too easy if there was a decent shotgun, because 70% of the game is imps popping out of closets and slowly walking towards you.

The Scattergun (and the other Scout primaries) from TF2 as posted above.

And Overwatch isn't even that fast paced.

Honestly I think it's a sound issue as much as anything else (although high damage, enemy knockback, and recoil would also help)

For a game as lauded for sound design as OW is, TF2 has much better, more punchy gun sounds, I find.

Like compare:

I fucking love shotguns.(who doesn't).
Some time ago I made a top ten shotguns lists and these were my picks:
The shotgun pistol from Killzone 3, The resident Evil shotgun, Gears' Gnasher, bulletstorm's boneduster, Advanced Warfare's sonicboom shotgun, Jak 2/3's scatter gun, the Halo 3 shotgun, the shotgun from Metal Slug, the SPAS-12 and no 1 is the super shotgun from Doom.
I would probably change a lot now but those are my picks.

Anyone else pull the trigger/press the mouse button harder than usual when they have a shotgun selected? I always seem to catch myself doing it, drives me crazy.

I do this, with a mouse and a controller. Doesn't really bother me, I don't think it messes me up too much. It's a reflection of how much fun it is to pull the trigger and see so much damage happening.

Ah, someone reminded me of Mass Effect. I definitely concur with the Claymore. I used to
rock that as a Krogan Warlord on ME3 multiplayer. Ran everything over like a truck.

Also, the hunting shotgun from Killing Floor is another good mention. The ability to fire both shells was stupidly entertaining for blowing Fleshpounds to pieces.

The worst shotgun in my recent memory has to be the Reboot Tomb Raider's. That thing is useless outside of blasting off specific barriers

The shotgun in the Brutal Doom mod is the best ever. So punchy and powerful.

*Edit* Didn't realise someone had already used the exact same gif =P

Was just about to post that. Lots of really great shotguns in Mass Effect, especially in ME3MP where you could do absolutely ridiculous things by overdoing spread reduction on weapons like the Claymore, Raider and Talon - enemies would just outright melt.

Shotguns in the Metro series deserve a mention too, especially the Duplet.

Natural Selection's shotgun had a very satisfying "snap" sound when pumping a round in. Always fun when I was able to get that weapon.

Sadly, NS2's shotty didn't have the same aural impact.

The one in TLOU is so good. I wish I had a gif of the enemies' dismemberment after taking a shot from it. It is so incredibly satisfying.

The combat shotgun in Fallout 3 isn't good on a visceral level, but it will carry you through almost the whole game, and plenty drop to help keep it in good nick. I'd recommend it to anyone playing the game for the first time.

Not the best image, but the Conference Call was great fun until the nerfs hit. Got one with a good roll on my group's second run of The Warrior, it saw a lot of use.

yup and in turn i end up clenching the controller and hitting R3(usually melee in shooters) by accident.

if I remember correctly Halo4 actually had an option for this. it was called clench protection.
