Best Clones/Copycats/Rip-Offs in gaming?

What exactly did it rip off from loz? For that matter which loz game did it rip off from?

People say that because it has the general structure of your 3D TLoZ game, involving dungeons, the usage of items, and even a mount. That said, it also has a Portal gun, God of War-esque combat, and a Devil May Cry gun. And that's just the first.

The second has RPG elements and Prince of Persia traversal mechanics. It's also less GoW and more Devil May Cry in its combat.

I would say they are less TLoZ clones, and more of a Zelda-like.

Van Helsing (XBox/PS2) is a straight-up Devil May Cry clone. Straight up, no joke. It fucking works, too.

Dungeon Hunter: Alliance is a Diablo clone. It's pretty decent. Like, the most rock solid, adequate, definition of the word "decent" there could possibly be.

It's a great Legend of Zelda clone.

You're good people

I saw it more as a Soul Reaver inspired game tbh. Which is what drew me to it.

Soul Reaver and Darksiders are both heavily influenced by Zelda. Darksiders moreso, to the point of borderline absurdity. I really don't see much Soul Reaver in Darksiders.

I don't think Saints Row 2 was trying to copy EXACTLY GTA (SR went its own direction afteer a while), but goddamn that game was fraking fun. Still play it today.

latest

The first Saints Row felt to me like more of a straight up GTA clone, but SR2 was certainly "heavily inspired" by GTA.

I don't actually remember if it was good or not, but to this day if my parents see me playing a 2D Zelda game they ask if it's Golden Axe Warrior (which was of course a zelda clone.)

Streets of Rage was a blatant rip of Final Fight (mechanics, enemies etc) but the second game was arguably better than any FF game.

Run Saber on the SNES? Its heavy inspired (cough *clone*, coughcoughcough) by Strider and is a little forgettable except for...

... having two player co-op, which is rad. Its not a better game, but is a very fun 2 player game. A bit short, but worth a playthrough or two for sure.

I wouldn't really say thats very accurate.

I loved Run Saber.

Yeah, Darksiders felt so much like some executive somewhere said "make a video game that is just like the other video games", and the devs were like "but which ones" and the exec was like "ALL OF THEM" and then they shoved everything in there.

And somehow, it WORKED.

xbox one s is improving older games???

why is the ps pro not doing this? it needs an additional patch for each game?
but hey, the fans are buying it, so who the fuck cares. good job@sony.

I don't think that was meant for this thread. Or, indeed, any thread on NeoGAF.

How about Nighty Nine Nights as a clone of Dynasty Warriors? I recall having a pretty positive opinion of it, but i can barely remember anything else about it.

This is obviously not meant for this thread, but i'd like to address you anyway as it seems you have some misinformation. The S makes a tiny improvement to games that would be unnoticeable to most players in most instances. It's a great bit of kit, but aside from offering HDR it is not an upgrade over the base model for gaming, just a minor hardware refresh. The original PS4 supports HDR with 4.0 firmware.
Most seem sure the Scorpio will require games to be specifically optimized for it for any major improvements, just like the Pro.

Pffft, we all know that the Xbox was a blatant clone of the Dreamcast anyway!

This thread needs more Limbo of the Lost :)

I wouldn't used the word clone on a good game that tried or happened to be similar to a more popular counterpart because it's disrespectful. It's put the "clone" game on an artificially inferior position and render any discussion on their quality and each different take on the genre meaningless and muddled.

Would Streets of Rage count in relation to Final Fight? If so, then that.

It would very much count, they were totally going for a clone of FF. Though, SoR1 is kinda trash in comparison, and SoR2 is probably the better than FF ever was.

Streets of Rage was a blatant rip of Final Fight (mechanics, enemies etc) but the second game was arguably better than any FF game.

^ yeah man

Would Kingdom of Alamur count as a Fable clone?
Not at all. It has almost nothing in common aside from being a fantasy RPG. I always did feel like it had some Fable in it, though, so I'm glad I'm not the only one that felt that way. There was just something about it that felt so familiar. Personally I wish it had a little more of Fable in it in the sense that there was more dialogue options and interactions with NPCs. And also some weird hidden bullshit like Fable had.

Oh, and some actual enemy variety, though that's a gripe with the game as a whole by itself.

If I recall from the original Game Informer interview back before the first game dropped, the director said that they wanted to make a game that was like all the games they liked. So you're not wrong. They also said the reason they changed the Horseman's names from Famine and Pestilence to Fury and Strife was because they thought about what would look better on a character select screen.
Lord of the Rings: The Third Age. It's pretty much FFX. It's also pretty good.

My only gripe is that you basically can't get anywhere without Berethor because he's so damn OP. Then again, so is the Elf chick.

I'm pretty sure both were developed by Ensemble Studios.

Wooooow, and I always thought it was a blatant rip-off (that I still loved, because Star Wars). I had no idea Ensemble made it.

Plays basically the same, apart from mind-blowingly difficult puzzles and a way darker plot.

Edit: not first, but damn it deserved some thumbnails.

Clone: Aggressive Inline

Taking the same tight responsive controls, clever objective based levels and addictive score attack gameplay of Tony Hawk but then opening up the levels by removing the time limits and making the maps bigger and the objectives broader it created a game so good that Tony Hawk would then rip off their campaign structure for Tony Hawk 4 and beyond.

The best example, first thing I thought of reading the thread title. It's not like a distant cousin or anything, it's a CLEAR clone, but it's so so so much better than its inspiration. Aggressive Inline is criminally forgotten and unknown at this point, It plays just fine on 360 backwards compatability too, played it again a couple of years ago and it's STILL the best tony hawk game by a mile. Perfectly nails the goofy atmosphere of those early games while expanding to the 'world' style of gameplay instead of the couple minute runs. I felt every Tony Hawk after this correctly copied the style but lost bits of the soul, never did it quite as well.

It's very satisfying to unlock more of the stages (Both through completing later levels/getting keys, and through altering the layouts by doing things in the stage) and gain mastery in this game. Even as a Tony Hawk veteran playing AI has a very clean learning curve with ample rewards as you improve.
