Best Games Nobody Played in 2012

Another vote for Dust. If the art style turns you off... shame on you.
Free to play MMO Dragon Nest.

Just came on Steam today and it has the best combat in an MMO/Dungeon focused RPG that I've played.

Also has great writing, very funny game, more so than any other game I've played in recent memory.
Yeah. Dragon's Nest is actually super solid despite how it looks. Controls great, you can combo, takes a good amount of skill to play well.

Dunno how it is since I last touched it in beta and how they are handling monetization though.
Dustforce.

Actually has a unique aesthetic and gameplay, no reliance on being OLD SCHOOL or advertising how SUPER DUPER CHALLENGING it is or anything.
I always knew I'd like it, but would either never play it or only spend 1-2 hours with it :[
Ended up not picking it up.

Ace Combat Assault Horizon Legacy

Really solid game but was a complete and total bomba. You can pick it up for $15-20 now, and I'd definitely recommend it if you're one of the people complaining about your 3DS getting dusty lately.

Reading this thread has almost convinced me to pop in the copy of Binary Domain that I bought early in the year. Still sealed.

For my pick, I'll say Skullgirls. It roster and its art style seem to have put a lot of people off, but what's underneath is a quite fantastic fighting game. Reverge/Lab Zero have implemented tons of features that all fighting games should incorporate. After a lengthy wait for an update, they continued to do just that. Really hope they do more with the franchise.

Mark of the Ninja, Dust: An Elysian Tail, Binary Domain & Lollipop Chainsaw are already mentioned so I'll say Warp, great game that so few people in here played. :(

Awesomenauts
The Pinball Arcade
Sonic & Allstars Racing Transformed

Some are popular on GAF, but I bet tons of people don't know these games at all, or think they're crap.

My Pick would have to be: Lord of The Rings: War in the North (PS3, 360 and PC, I believe)

The game have one amazing Soundtrack. They performed on the last Year's E3 and I loved it. The orchestra is simply amazing. I recommend you watching the Behind the Scenes.

The Story was nice, locations are great to be played in the cold Winter and the combat is a simple Hack & Slash.

You can play it Co-op, up to 3 Players. It's pretty cheap. You can buy a Collector's Edition there's two, one for NA and one for Europe. Their art is also very nice.

I played Awesomenauts for the first two months after release, but with the way characters like Lonestar were over-powered essentially forced me to quit playing; it wasn't fun.

Binary Domain is a phenomenal game. One of my favorite games this gen.

It might not be Double Dragon, but it's a damn good time. Still waiting for the online bro-op patch though :(
And those credits are awesome.

Such a delightfull pirate-themed exploration RPG. Combat needs some getting used to and sucks againts monsters, but that doesnt matter. It's all about the atmosphere and exploring. And Piranha Byte nailed that.

Such a delightfull, weird little platformer. A real treat :)

Mark of the Ninja and Binary Domain. Also in my top 5 this year.

Was super hyped for Lollipop Chainsaw because of the people involved but I wasn't really feeling it. Don't know how people say it's better than Shadows of the Damned.

The Sea Will Claim Everything. My absolute favorite point and click adventure from this generation (yes I meant generation). Most people have been saying the walking dead has the best story this year, but I don't think TWD touches the humorous, charming, witty, and oddly philosophical and political nature of TSWCE.

The throwaway dialogue alone is incredible.
I need to look in to this, absolutely love adventure games. Looks very interesting.
Need to check the Point & Click thread more often D:

If i'm not wrong lots of vita gamers bought virtue last reward....

It's not a 2012 game but i played it on vita, it's called crystal mines(for psp, but there is for ds and ios too if i'm not wrong) and nobody played it for REAL.
It's a remake of a clone of boulder dash... Oh man it's so good! It's an old style arcade puzzler with 300 levels(THREE HUNDREDS LEVELS, i finished it in 3 or 4 months lol) most of them are really genial, well designed and devilish, you are a robot that has to get all the crystals in mines full of enemies, traps, dynamic gravity and many more.
You'll hate it for the difficulty of some levels and the sadism of the developers, but at the same time you will not leave it until you finish it!

Botanicula

1) If you have ~3 minutes, listen to this music and try not to smile
2) If you have ~40 minutes, watch this delightful Quick Look

From the makers of Machinarium and many other games, Botanicula oozes charm and personality more than anything else released this year. The sound design is consistently excellent and the scenarios you run into are really bizarre and creative. You get to play volleyball at one point, for example.

Know what you're getting into, though; Botanicula is a fairly simple point and click adventure game that's more about poking around and exploring than challenge. It provides a nice change of pace from, say, an FPS campaign, but it might not be for everybody.

Oh, and the art design. This game is gorgeous.

(I also wrote in further depth about the game's soundtrack recently)

I agree... I think that the Internet crapped on it on Day One because the controls didn't feel exactly like people expected them to, and then nobody else gave the game a chance. If nothing else, I thought that both the writing and the music were among the most hysterical/clever stuff this year, and I thought it was a blast to play through!

Botanicula is a good choice. It's pretty lightweight as an adventure game, especially compared to Machanarium, but everything about the game oozes charm. Music and art are great. It almost seems like the best platform would be iOS.

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 is my favorite game this year that no one has played.

It's a DS SRPG. Of course no one's played it :)

EDIT: in case someone wants to be a smartass, that's the Japanese release date. It released 2/28/12 in NA.

Would have bought if it came out on 3DS. I'll wait for the upres version.

Gateways - Easiest way to descibe it would be to say it's a 2D Portal-style game, only with puzzles that bend both space and time. Awesome game.

It's a technical mess, but at least it had the fucking balls to adhere to the conventions of the survival horror genre in a generation where so many publishers find it more marketable to turn their franchises into outright shooters. Disempowerment, an inventory system, encouraged exploration in a semi open-world setting, side-quests and the best protagonist to star in a Silent Hill game thus far. Great game.

Agree with this 1000%. I really enjoyed the game, especially the side quests. And like you say, its more true to the genre than anything else. Having played this and RE6 this year, reminded just how far RE has fallen, and how far from its roots its gone.

this looks like a good one. may have to check this out.

I'd double dip for DS2 3DS no sweat but I wouldn't count on it happening. I think DSO only happened because they needed a bone to throw the 3DS in its first couple months.

But yes, full voice acting (I really liked DSO's english voices), moar demons and hopefully some added plot for the endings... I'd be all over that.

Alan Wake's American Nightmare, FTL, all of Tropico 4's DLC, and Orcs Must Die 2.

It's $20 at Best Buy right now.

That one was really hard for me to pass up. I'll play it someday.

Erm, I picked it up for $10 on Amazon this summer. It's a fun (surprisingly well-written at times) game--not a great game, but a fun game.

Another vote for Silent Hill: Downpour. Got shit on and undeservedly wrapped up in the HD remaster mess. It's a worthy entry in the series and better than most of the recent ones. The atmosphere, main characters' downward spiral and especially the awesome side mission stuff worked together to make the years best survival horror game. If you shit on it without playing it or giving it a fair shot, you suck. I'm looking at you Giant Bomb.

American Nightmare too!~

Little Inferno - Just oozes with charm, some great dark humor and an engaging puzzle mechanic. Plus, you can burn things.

agreed - the gameplay grew a little stale towards the end (and it's not like the game takes longer than 3 hours to complete) but the presentation totally made up for it.

If I see it anywhere for $10, it's in my cart instantly. Backlogs and wife be damned.

Best?
A little too much maybe, but a game i advice is sound shapes.
It is becoming my most played of 2012 after GT 5 clearly.

Sound Shapes
Dyad
The Unfinished Swan
Papo & Yo
Gravity Rush
Gungnir
Growlanser IV
Rhythm Thief
DJ Max Technika Tune
Binary Domain
Lollipop Chainsaw

DROD: Gunthro and the Epic Blunder.

I made a topic about it and got like 3 replies.
No one cares about the best puzzle game series ever made?

More people need to play FTL.

Double Dragon Neon is a super good time.

Dodonpachi Maximum is shooting bliss on iOS.

OH, and Code of Princess is the best sequel to Guardian Heroes you'll ever get.

I already mentioned Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, but I'll actually explain why I recommend it.

514AIfEYX2L._SL500_300_.jpg

Developed by FROM Software, the game is much more like the PS2-era Another Century's Episode games than the PS3 disaster that is known as ACE R. It was released at a lower price point than most PS3 titles, but in truth it's a complete game with lots to do. You can follow the storyline via numerous characters, as well as a Custom Cast mode where you put together a small battalion of mobile suits and a warship. The combat is competent and the controls aren't as janky as I like to joke.

As for DLC, it does exist. Some of it is total fluff, but other items are well worth your moon bucks. There's a prologue mission that gives background on the origins of the Sinaju and Full Frontal, plus you can buy Full Armor Unicron which is a total beast.

The game sold poorly in Japan and is pretty cheap at the regular places online. If you like Gundam, have a PS3 and don't mind playing games in Japanese, think about giving it a chance.

Gametrailers nominated it for best adventure game. Good explanation in the video. All aboard the charm-train!

Any good description of it? How does it compare to Persona 4, being the only Shin Megami Tensei game I'm familiar with?
