Best JRPG protagonists?

Ack, I came in to this thread to say this!

Yuri is my backup

Yuri.jpg

Yuri Hyuga from Shadow Hearts is the best protagonist ever.

Let me add another Yuri to the list.

From Infinite Space. Just look at this bad mofo. Apparently characters called Yuri are badass.

I'll also mention Sagi from Baten Kaitos Origins.

He turns badass after the halfway point of the game. There are a few villains you can choose to kill and Sagi has no qualms stabbing them to death at all.

Zidane from FFIX. After the two horribly depressing protags we get an actually upbeat, funny, social and outgoing one. Then they tried to make him again in FFX and we got stuck with that shit that is teeeeeeeeeduhs. Jesus.
Came in to say this. You are a good man/woman.

Also Fei from Xenogears. Amazing character for reasons I don't want to spoil.
EDIT: Aaand my post was made, making mine here useless. Should have read more lol.
Good choice with Estelle from Trails in the Sky. Joshua was great, too.

Since you picked those, I'll choose others.

Zidane - Final Fantasy IX:

(Dissidia art^)

He's funny, charming, and just really likable in general. I consider Vivi and him to be dual-protagonists, and Vivi is my favorite Final Fantasy character. I liked how Zidane acted as an older brother to Vivi as well. :)

Other option:

Fei - Xenogears:

I really just find Fei very intriguing. He has an interesting back-story and is fairly likable. Plus, you don't have too many JRPG protagonists who
have sex with the female lead during the game.

EDIT 2:This thread made me realize that I should play more JRPGs. I have not finished one in almost 10 years.....

I didn't like FFVII that much, so I was really surprised by how much I liked Zack in CC, he's such a chill friendly guy.

Agreed. Zack really came out of nowhere for me because there was nothing much to go on with his character in FFVII. But after he was fleshed out in Crisis Core, I really liked him (Zack >>>> Cloud).

I'm amazed that someone else would post these two, together no less, besides me which is why I came here begin with. So good show sir. The progression of Yuri is great since Infinite Space is so damn long/encompassing and Sagi is just a badass who only gets better, plus he's got one of the coolest sidekicks in gaming history.

Along with Tales Yuri, they're all just solid characters that don't get bogged down by needlessly corny or shallow backstories or character traits/flaws. They're believable and likeable and don't do shit all the time that makes no sense and cause you to hate the game.

I play all the cool games :P

Yeah, I really like Cloud too in FFVII. Shame about what happened to his character in KH and AC though...
He's not really canon in KH anyway, and AC is a mere movie. Don't really treat it as canon personally. In fact, compilation of FFVII was to me, nothing more than company's greed to milk the game. As such, nothing good can really come out of it since they were all desperate attempts in revisiting the universe.

Heh I played out the ending in a unique way once.

Execute Nasca and let Hughes live and therefore allow him to save you at the end. I guess Guillo's wit if anyone's would have been the one to point out to him " You do know we killed your little brother, right?". Too bad he wasn't there at the moment though. "Not even a mother pow would save the stampeding oliphant that trampled her young!" :P

Fei - Geeze probably one of the deepest/most confusing/most insane back stories and character development in a game. Love this guy.

art-014.jpg

Ashe - SHES THE MAIN CHARACTER GET OVER IT!

Yurilowell.png

Yuri - A common sense character... in an anime/rpg!? THE HELL!? seriously liked him. The only memorable character from a tales series so far for me.

Seth-01.jpg

Seth - really cool character that was female no less. Awesome back story.

Justin_(Edited).jpg

Justin - Grandia was another "adventure" rpg... man this game and this character SOLD IT. I really felt like I was experiencing an adventure, really hard to do right apparently but I don't care what anyone says Grandia nailed the adventure feeling.

lunar43.jpg

Alex - Lunar was the first "classic" rpg I played that was not futuristic. Loved this game and characters. Alex was a likable character through the end. Not very deep but would not want anyone else in this game.

Oooooooh, good one!
Just the right balance of wacky and bad-ass.

Also, OP gets it right with Estelle.
It's rare for a story-driven RPG to have a female protag, and Falcom nailed it.

Also, this gal:

Cloud_Strife_art.jpg

Call him overrated if you wish, but he is a genuine likable character with interesting growth in his game.

Yup, Cloud's always my pick for these. His immense popularity seems to have overshadowed his actual character development in VII, but I enjoyed his journey and found the strength he gained inspiring.

And for my other pick -- I know the XIII saga is the black sheep of the series, but Noel is one of the best leads the series has had. His life wasn't easy but he never really let that bring him down. He's strong, funny, smart, and genuinely like-able.

He's not really canon in KH anyway, and AC is a mere movie. Don't really treat it as canon personally. In fact, compilation of FFVII was to me, nothing more than company's greed to milk the game. Yeah, it's disappointing that so many people focus on his 45 minute depressive episode in Advent Children, and ignore everything else he went though in his 50 hour game.

I think one reason people love Yuri so much is because of his voice actor. Dude had a good deep voice for Yuri.

And I know people will disagree but, Oliver from Ni no Kuni! He was a refreshing change in protagonists. Super naive and unsure of himself, but still kind and driven.

One thing I did like about Oliver was when it came down to doing something he was all for it and didn't back down. A giant monster comes crashing down and standing in the way of the goal, and Oliver gets all serious and instead of acting like a little kid he usually says something along the lines of "Alright, let's do this!"

Yuri is definitely the best protagonist in Tales: Abyss, Symphonia, Dawn of the New World, Graces, and Xilia...all annoying whiny, or passive self-esteem issues, teenagers!

Stocke, Welkin, and Vyse. Ryudo from Grandia 2 and Kalas from Baten Kaitos sound like a lot of fun. The obnoxiousness of the two characters sounds funny, but of course it'll probably wear off by the end of the respective games.

I just checked who that is, and that guy has a SERIOUSLY impressive CV.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troy_Baker

Such a shame. Troy Baker said he did voice work for Vesperia PS3 as I recall, and I believe that he's mentioned Yuri's one of his favorite works. Sure he might as well say that about everybody, but he's come back for Yuri twice after Vesperia 360 so I'd think there's got to be some truth to it.

Been said before, but Yuri from Vesperia. The ultimate anti-hero. And a very different type of main character for a Tales game. Cool, mature, actually KILLS people, law-breaking...

Since then, every main character in the other Tales games is a 15 year old boy who has no personality and probably has never even seen a boob before...

I really loved these ones.

The-Last-Story-Logo-620x350.jpg

I've always said this and it needs to be repeated. Last Story has one of the best cast of characters in a video game ever. They just gel together so well.

Zidane Tribal
Dissidia_Zidane.png

Not much needs to be said. He's a lovable and great character.

Yuri Lowell
55090.jpg

Best tales of character ever. Not preachy and do what needs to be done. Even if it's illegal.

Yuri Lowell-Tales of Vesperia. Yuri is what a real ideal hero should be.

Kaim-Lost Odyssey. In-game he isn't really too good, he's mostly stoic and emotionless. It's mostly in the background story. Kaim is a complex man who has grown cold and detached to the world.

Yuri is good, but he's not the only good protagonist in Tales.

Senel (and Chloe)

Stahn

From the FF series, Bartz (FFV) and Celes, as well as Terra (especially during WoR) are awesome protagonists as well.

Can't forget
Chrono-Trigger.jpg

Silent protagonist at his best.

Zelos and Genis are the punks.

Rather than suffering from paralyzing self-doubt and the inability to make his own decisions, Lloyd was optimistic and determined to keep moving forward in whatever way he could. I liked him.
"Stubborn, headstrong, optimistic, and gets into trouble, BUT has the heart of gold!"

Or, "Alway serious, mature, and cool headed, BUT has a soft spot for cute things!"

The typical character description in JRPGs!

Yuna_Renderin_FFX.jpg

The Kween Yuna.

Obviously because she's a real person with hope no matter how bad the situation is. Humble and genuine too.

I actually didn't like Estelle from Trails in the sky. I thought she was too optimistic and naive
and I'm a bitter shell of a man.
I only really liked the blonde guy in that game before I stopped playing in chapter 3. Now that I think about it I stop playing lots of games because I don't like the characters. I did like the characters in SMT Devil Survivor and Crimson Shroud though. I can't remember the last time I really liked the characters in a JRPG - most of them are the same.

Charlie Tunoku is my pick as well. His personality may be almost entirely defined by the player, but he still is such an enjoyable silent protagonist that bounces off other in-game characters so well.
The supporting cast is absolutely phenomenal, and they are such a pleasure to both play and interact with.
