Best loot whore game out now?

Delta, traditionally when people think of loot games, it would need to have random loot and be heavily stat-driven rather than the set locations and specific loot that Zelda has. Zelda can somewhat scratch that itch I suppose on just the collection front but doesn't really deliver the stat min-maxing and sense of delight of getting an especially good drop that a Diablo styled game does.
.

This was my exact thought under a wrong understanding, nothing more and nothing less.

Thank you

LOL holy fuck man, you need to relax and drop the attitude. My confusion was that there's already a general definition on what equates a "loot whore" game, which I was never aware of in the first place(So fucking sue me).
IMO if a game has a fair amount of cool things to collect/loot, it could be classified as a loot whore game, quality over quantity IMO, so with saying that I personally think Zelda has an abundance of cool collectible things to put itself within this proclaimed new genre.

Now would you kindly pull your dick out of my ass.

To be fair, when SS's upgrade system was first announced, a lot of previews and discussions did start (attempting) to refer to it as a loot mechanic (however erroneous it may have been), so I suppose you can't be faulted completely. I use that as a stepping stone to say journalists and developers need to be a lot more responsible with how they toss around terminology. Darksiders 2 is widely heralded as possessing loot whore mechanics, but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it turns out to be a dirt simple, super limited, kindergarten implementation like SS that only fits the loosest of definitions.

I have played pretty much all of the somewhat completed Diablo 2 mods out there, and i have to say, Eastern Sun is by far one of the most boring ones. It just feels like an extension of Diablo 2.

By the time i started playing mods, i had already been playing the core game online for 3 years, so the appeal of Eastern Sun is probably lost on me. Median XL and Back To Hellfire are by far the best Diablo 2 mods i have ever played, as they change the game dramatically rather than just add to it. Nezeramontias also had some interesting ideas (mostly regarding the souls and dolls), and more recently, Netherworld Rises is also very interesting from what i've played so far.

Yeah, Median and Eastern Sun are the only D2 mods I've messed with.

ES is basically a extension of D2, but with a shit-ton of stuff thrown in for good measure.

Median XL is practically a game of its own due to the radical changes it does and whatnot.

Both are highly recommended though.

It's not region locked but the serial#'s of the UK version of the game will only work on the UK servers if you want to play online (but that's not a bad thing since they are more active than the US servers).

DLGamer also sells the UK version and I've purchased from them before:

http://www.dlgamer.com/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=sacred 2&language=en

It's actually cheaper to buy both the original plus the ice and blood add on separately as opposed to just buying the Gold version. I'm not aware of any additional benefits that the gold version provides over FA + the addon. And if you want it even cheaper (what I did the last time when I wanted an additonal account for online play) is buy the UK digital version of Fallen Angel from DL Gamer then buy the disc version of Ice and Blood from Amazon here:

Thanks for this, hoping the game is good.

Zelda is like "Loot-whore" lite RPG. You collect some gear, upgrade some stuff, find some materials but its all so minor so people don't get lost in a sea of random stats and grinding for gear.

A loot-whore game is focused around a group of gamers that just love to collect items. Weapon, potions, gold, armour, guns, whatever you want but there has to be loads of it. The amount of useful items has to be heavily outweighed by the amount of useless vendor trash. Zelda has items that are good for specific jobs but none of it would you view as vendor trash.

If people want to join this hallowed group, you have to drop all thoughts of fancy graphics, amazing plotlines etc and focus on one thing...GIVE ME MORE LOOT!

I've never played Diablo II, but I have it on my computer (a legit copy).

If I jumped in right now, would there by any kind of community I could get into?

Hrmm....its a great solo game but I am sure you will find some like-minded people to collect some loot with.

Personally its the only game that runs well on my old netbook, so I am playing it to fill time between now and Diablo 3 arrives/the world ends.

Last time I checked there were about 50k people laddering D2 day or night, and that was before 1.13 which I'd imagine caused a big increase from all the returning players.

GAF had a pretty decent run around 6 months ago where quite a few of us went through the game again. Might be best for you to wait until something like that starts up again.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Its not as vast as some of the games mentioned, but its still fun as hell to try and find all the goodies scattered throughout the land.

HEY GUISE, I GOTS A TRIFORCE

How is Sacred 2 without the expansion? It seems like it mostly just adds content.

I sunk quite a bit of time into it solo when it first came out. My biggest gripe was the fact that I like to play a ranged caster a la the D2 Sorc. In Sacred 2 that means your character is voiced by a valley-girl complete with vacuous comments in combat.

Diablo 2 is still king of this particular domain. i can remember so many nights wasted feverishly bartering with others over impossibly good rares. the neurochemicals released when laying eyes on a one-in-a-million drop are intense.

as for recent stuff, i have been pretty underwhelmed by the cliche ridden Dungeon Defenders. the loot is super tedious to sort through (a huge no-no) in what is surely a case of quantity over quality, and playing it alongside Orcs Must Die has made the combat feel utterly hollow. i appreciate the significance that different stats have on one's character, but unfortunately there are no Visceral Weapon Impact or Art Direction stats to maddeningly pump points into.

Torchlight has wonderful presentation and it controls great, but without co-op partners to share loot with or pubbies to rip off engage in friendly capitalism with the progression lacks context. the sequel should be wonderful, however.

The man is using Comic Sans as his desktop font, we're well and truly through the looking-glass here.
haha, surreal.

btw i'm glad i'm not the only one that calls it Blands. didn't someone compliment that game's gunplay earlier in this thread? even more surreal!

Man, am I still the only person to have mentioned Dungeon Siege 2? Has Dungeon Siege 3 soiled the franchise to forgetful levels?

Anybody mention Darkspore yet? Not that it's great overall, but for pure mindless loot-grinding it's worth a look if you've exhausted the better-known (and generally better :p) options. It has a very solid loot system and practically infinite opportunity to keep looking for something better.

I loved the DS games, even DS3. Despite them going down the set class to choose from route, it was a fairly good loot game. If they do a DS4, I would much prefer they go back to DS, though I don't see that anytime soon, despite DS3 selling ok.

Qualifies as a loot whore game ?

Other than Collecting Em All, what other loot is in the game?

Diablo 2, no one has been able to simply recreate Blizzard's loot system and I don't understand why.

Its simple and it works. Most games that copy Diablo tend to add more and more clutter to game, which actually detracts from the simple truth...all people want to do is collect loot.

As well as the previously mentioned TL2, D3 and PoE set to drop in 2012 I forgot about Borderlands 2. Now I know the first game wasn't all that but they did have a solid loot mechanic at the heart.

The sequel is supposed to have far more varied environments and armour drops iirc, should be good.

Diablo 2 and Titans Quests are still my favorites. Sacred 2 on the PC with mods is very good as well, but avoid the console versions the frame rate is horrible at times. Torchlight is ok for the price, but it gets a little repetitive. I even enjoyed Too Human for the loot whore aspect, but the animations and some of the high end gear drop rates is ridiculous. Dungeon Hunter on PSN is surprisingly solid as well. Having said all that, if you havent played much Titans Quest or Diablo 2, I would stick with them.

Alright, acquired Titan Quest in a trade. Should I wait until I get Immortal Throne to start playing or can I just go at it now?

Go at it now. Get use to how the game works and you will also find out if you actually like it or not. :D

I am tempted to re-install TQ gold actually, but it does take so long for the game to warm up and the loot to change from wooden spears and sandals. I remember when I first got it and people were posting pictures of their "endgame" characters in amazing armour and I thought it must have been a different game, 20 hours in and I still looked like Spartacus.

Just a shame it's a seriously bad game in most other respects. Can't understand the love.

We loot whores are a starved breed, we will often overlook terrible game-play mechanics if there is a chance of a +3 stat modifier in it for us.

Borderlands was "ok", better with the controller for sure, with all the content packs it's not bad but by no means is it perfect, with only one uber hard boss to run for loot and terrible vehicle sections.

The second game, so far, looks amazing though.

*nod nod*

At least the future is looking pretty bright for us loot-whores.

It's funny. I came in here to suggest Torchlight as it's truly all I'd played of the lootwhore genre in the past couple years, but I thought about it and decided to back out of the thread without posting it. Why? Well, I never finished Torchlight. I believe I got pretty far into it, but ultimately, got bored and quit. I never could really place my finger as to why it bored me, but after reading some of the opinions in this thread, it helped give some vocalization to my feelings.

Basically, it's just overly simplistic. When it comes down to it, that made it boring. Items didn't really change as much as I'd like, the enchanting system was wonky, and you never really used more than a couple offensive skills and otherwise just had to keep yourself constantly buffed (which isn't fun, just a nuisance). I played as the Alchemist (aka, spellcasting class) and damn, it just didn't do it for me.

I think the main reason is that is felt like playing Diablo 1. Just dungeon upon dungeon, without the feeling of actually being in a world full of loot. Some cool ideas but is was all a big test for a large MMO. Torchlight 2 will be much more interesting but by then most people will be playing Diablo 3...maybe. :D

I enjoyed it, didn't finish it because it's absolutely massive, but was fun. On PC if you have Windows 7 the patched expansion version (2.65.2) is far more stable. The original game was only patched to 2.43 and is far less stable under Win7. If you're playing the original version make sure to change compatibility of the sacred2.exe to Windows XP SP3 (right click the exe > properties > compatibility tab).

Torchlight was a budget MMO test from some of the guys behind Fate, D1, Mythos etc...

The game is shallow and the loot is all the same in terms of models, barring a few uniques, the armour is all based on about 3 models per class.

It's still the best of the genre in recent years and if they can take those solid mechanics and great art direction and make a real game out of it for TL2 I will be a happy camper, especially as I won't need to be on a solid wi-fi network 24/7 just to play it...

I've only played the demo but isn't Deathspank pretty much a Diablo-clone, or is just a lite version? I'd recommend that for the humour though, if not for anything else.

I feel like I've played nothing but crap.

Sacred 2 - World is too damn big, far too many garbage quests, very easy to screw up your character, bosses have too much HP/Armor.
Borderlands - Almost all of the loot is ass, difficulty is unbalanced, lots of wandering back & forth, shoddy mechanics.
Torchlight - Just absolutely hate it. It's like the paint-by-numbers lootwhore game. Nothing unique or interesting about it.

I wish I could give up on the genre, but I know the next one that comes out will eat up all of my time no matter how ruddy it is.
