how long does it take for the score to show up in the WFC rankings? I sent mine.

score was 1433286

I'll tackle the bonus content for sure. game was amazing on so many levels, even the story was awesome imo. none of that lets save the world from peril bullshit, just plain old adventure and the ending was amazing very well choreographed. music was incredible Sugiyama :bow :bow :bow. I dont have any complaints, Shiren is a game that knows what it is and runs with it till the end. the experience was awesome and well I gotta give mad props to chun soft for finding way to make the game so different each time you play it. you will never encounter the same situations and sometimes the game really test how are you gonna react toward certain situations.

I really want Shiren 3 and Shiren 2 if it ever gets ported or something. come on sega!

edit: :sigh damn cheaters the top scores stats are ridiculous

top score of the month stats are:
level: 99
HP: 999
Experience: 9999999
Gitana (money): 99999

...

your score is based on what exactly? is it enemies killed? less turns used? the amount of items you used?

I would like to know.

nobody is completly sure but the general idea is that more experience and going deeper give an higher score (notice that i cleared the game at lv 26 while everyone above me is at least lv 29-30) money also seems to matter and someone said the number of turn you use is important too and considering the two cheater have different score although they have the same "999" stats that's probably true too although it doesn't seems to matter too much
oh also getting rescued give you a penality (which is why there is a guy below me with a 70.000 score)

Same here. Its the best little fighter game (SSBB) I've ever played and its something I can play with my wife...but, by gum, I have things still to do in Shiren!

teasel: I see, the leaderboards are a nice idea. but like shown, the cheaters always ruin everything.

armbands are definitely the rarest type of items in the game. I really didnt encounter a lot of them.

i got turned into a rice ball by a Rice Boss and died. :(

havent had too much free time to sink into this game yet, but i cant wait to get a good chunk of hours to sit down and play. so far its awesome.

my friend code: 1719-2879-7611

im not even sure what we can do with our FC's or how to go about rescuing anyone or really how the hell to play this game (ive played a bunch of nethack though, so i have some idea how roguelikes work). but im going to figure it out soon and get back here, probably with questions.

sucks about cheaters on the ranking boards already. sad shit. :/

I've died so many freakin times its not even funny but I've sorta built a momentum now (I just have to setup some security in regards to the equipment I already have).

Also, how do you go about getting money? Whenever you backtrack its more or less rare running into items (or getting items from enemies). You have to keep pushing foward or something? The fear of dieing is strong with this game ;_;

if you return to the starting town your money doesn't reset but the stuff in the first few floors does

This game reminds me of the SMS game "Dragon Crystal". Any relation? I love how unforgiving it is, even though everytime I die I swear to myself that I'm done with this game.

Big time! Only now you can ACTUALLY SAVE!

While possibly not officially acknowledged as such that game was very Rogue/Mysterious Dungeony.

btw, re the music - i find it amazing, one of the big fat bullet points of this game for me.

Night_Trekker, is there any way to check the original SFC score? maybe in an emu?

Ok so I just bought this, bit the bullet. Hope it doesn't disapoint!

What's this friends code thing? What exactly does it do?

Edit: here is my FC 4768-7175-4910 JoeFenix, I added everyone from the list!

I played a lot more today, died a few more times and noticed more differences. They tweaked the game more than I expected but the changes are mostly good ones.

Pick up money you find and sell items you happen across. That's about all you can do. (Going backwards wasn't even an option in the original game.)

And you're going to die. A lot. Plan for it by dropping good equipment in warehouses and upgrading a stored weapon every time you pass through a specific town. After a while you start to get a feel for how much potential a specific run has, though things can change in an instant if you're lucky/unlucky or careless.

blu said:

That would work. There are several YouTube videos out there of the SFC game, too.

And don't pay too much attention to my whining about the really minor music differences. After a while of playing a game you just come to love the exact sound of the music and anything else sounds "wrong".

The only one I've played (in the original game) opens up after you complete the main dungeon. The entrance is
under the Bufu monument in the Bamboo Village
, but, again, you have to finish the main quest first.

i made a Shiren avatar. :)

i love this game!

i got farther than i had so far last night. it took me many levels just to find a weapon and then a bunch more to find anything even halfway decent.

one of those kid tanks killed the little lost girl i was toting around through dungeon levels and he leveled up into a Popa Tank (i think it was). that thing was vicious. it would take off like 2/3 of my health with every hit. i probably should have tried to run instead of fighting it, but the battle was soon over.

the run probably isnt worth being rescued over, but i want to try out the system for the hell of it, since its there and all. my rescue code is: 0000-0000-1006.

please post if you are going to attempt it. i will post if i get too impatient and decide to resume my game instead. thanks!

how long does the doppelganger staff spell last?

and in the town before the swamp, some guy gave me a
plating scroll
. will he give me another one on future runs?

also, i've been afraid to try it, but once i've recruited the "masseur," is it alright to let him give me a massage while walking around the dungeons? i'm afraid he'll sap my strength/hp/hunger again ...

I think the prize is a one time thing and getting a massage a believe is taking a roll of the dice (could be good, could be bad). I also don't think you can count on him to always be able to undo the damage he has caused other than that first story event (but not sure).

Since I think (not super sure here) a Chiropractic Jar can undue the damage he cause, you may want to experiment with him when you have some extra jars handy. I thought one of the good things he could do is actually raise stats, but I'm not sure and if a possible bad effect is LOWERING any of your maxes, a Chiropractic Jar can't save you.

So...to sum it up, be more bold than me and tell us what happens! :D

1. go to gaibara with a pot,he will break it,return to him a few times until he make the melding jar
2. meet with naoki on the first dungeon, give him a mamul meat,go to the resturaunt on the second town and order something, meet with naoki again and escort him to the resturaunt, pay him 10.000 gitan,go talk with gaibara,go to the opposite restaurant, next run naoki will leave the bufoo staff and this will open the trap dungeon and the food dungeon... doing these two unlock the final puzzle which are all the bonus dungeons in the snes version
3. go with pekeji alone on the second town, you'll hear of bungee jumping,go to the valley alone and you will encounter someone that looks like fay, after talking to him go to him with pekeji and decide to do bunjee jumping, after a few runs you should unlock the ravine of death
4. not sure about how i unlocked this one... you'll see a man saying there is something weird on B15F town and after that just talk with a courier on the starting town and then return there to unlock the ceremonial chamber
5. tainted path get unlocked automaticaly after finishing the game, just go to the golden city again

ooh. i know! i wasnt even to Table Mountain yet. :lol i was in Cave Mountain Spirits (13th or 14th lvl i believe).

i just found a faq on Gamefaqs (decent amount of action over there on the forums too. Ive seens Gek post there a bunch).

like i said, not really a game worth saving. i just wanted to try out the feature even though it kind of just seems like a gimic.

I'll make an attempt, if I can figure out how to use the rescue code.

EDIT: Alright, I've got it figured out. I'll give it a shot.

EDIT 2: Holy crap. That was very tough. I sent the revival spell over wifi.

When you go on a rescue quest you're playing through the same dungeon layouts as the person being rescued, right?

this game is unbelievably hard. i got to like floor 14 on my first adventure. beginner's luck? after that i havent been able to get much past the first town.

Sometimes you do just get lucky. Unbelievably, I got to floor 17 on my first try (though I did play the SFC original a lot).

Make sure you play through all of the tutorial puzzles, which teach you lots of tricks and ways to use items. Good advice for anyone playing the game for the first time.

yes, in the first 15 floors I could muscle my way to the entrance/stairs but that's really not going to work for table mountain, it all comes down to clever item usage and what you have in your inventory. that's why I love the shit out of the game.

i got way further than i ever had last night! 26!

i was doing pretty good, had decent plated weapons/shields/bracers, a nice collection of staves and scrolls, good food supply, and even a blank scroll i found.

then i stepped on a trap that spawned two mages, a dragon, and a tiger around me. tried to read a scroll but a mage "sealed" me. tried to put a little distance between myself and the group so i could start picking them off one by one with staves, but then i got turned into a rice ball. i didn't even get to take anyone down with me. :(

I finished Table Mountain last night (and made a new icon to celebrate!), but it was through some extremely gracious rescues by some friends. I got through some tight messes, but it's always the weird things you don't plan for that do you in.

15F: Oryu got herself killed by a double-strike crab-bug, and as I was running from it, I got ambushed by a radish and a haniwa, so I was continually confused and leveled down like crazy, and when I finally got out of their clutches, I was taken out by another double-strike crab-bug because I was half of my former level. The marsh is EVIL.
24F: Hit a bomb trying to stop it, but ended up making it explode. Walked a step, got killed by an invisible air demon.
26F: I was all prepared for the ravine! I knew what I would do if things got hairy. I postponed a death angel to the exit, and switched with it. It got a few hits in, and I didn't want to go to the next floor so low on health, so I grabbed an empty paralysis staff, but hit swing instead of throw. Killed the next turn. The unbelievable sense of horror I felt dying standing on the exit. That's just awful.
After the revive, I entered the next floor in a room with some nasty enemies though, so I had the right idea to wait, even if I messed up a button press. (although I realized I had a scroll of need that would've helped me out, but it's hard to remember what you have when it's all in jars of holding).
Has anyone killed the boss head-on? I only hear about tricks to take it out, since it's so powerful. Of course, that's part of the fun, I guess. And I think
a doppelganger staff
is one of the more fun solutions.

I want to start opening up the other dungeons, but for now I have a lot of rescue karma to pay back. :)

lakupo sounds like he gathered tons of experience ; )

i had a close-call moment myself - after stumbling across some truly nice equipment right before cryptic rock, and leaving the most of it at the store house there (god save the little girls!) i decided my (newly regained) mastersword needed some upgrading so i took on the way back to mountaintop on non-full stomach and no rice supplies. got to mountaintop pretty casually, upgraded the sword one level, and then i decided i needed the inn money for some extra upgrading and potentially some shopping at bamboo village. so i left mountaintop at 20 fullness. and that nearly costed me my life (read: the freaking mastersword this whole journey was about) - that rush back to bamboo must've been the most intense rush i've done in any RPG to date, includingly real-time ones! i'll just say i stepped into the final dungeon exit to bamboo at 3 units of health (out of my original ~90), after using up all of my health restorative inventory to keep me alive on a growling stomach. 'a wonderer' indeed, phew.

ps: the shop at baboo was rather barren, even after a few re-entries to the place to reshuffle the merchandise. so i eventually said WTH and headed back to the hamlet for some good old fey's pillaging, stature be damned ; )

yeah on level 26 it did takes 11 arrows,a few knockback staff,a dragon herb,a powerup scroll (and several swings of a katana+9) and 3 push of a chiropratic jar

Hello, long time lurker, first time poster. This game is finally the one to push me over the threshold though, very tough game. Currently I have made around 6 or 7 runs. The game sorta reminds me of how BoF:DQ works with how the important dying is to progression, though I have only played like a half an hour through that game.

Anyways, by FC is 2535-3368-9074. I'll add everyone in the op, and try to help out with any rescues as I can.

Retarded OR the next new Jackass Challenge? Take a naked cart ride right from the first hamlet to the Tainted Path and see how many levels you can decend until something looks at you sideways. THE ULTIMATE STEALTH CHALLENGE!

I bought Shiren last night. It has been great so far.

I just hope that there is some way to revive dead companions. I don't want to be stuck having to use the fat dude. Oryu where are you?
