Binary Domain's Voice Recognition.

Okay I'm sitting here trying to get this thing to work. It can't pick up anything I'm saying. I've used 3 different microphones, an official sony headset, the sony pulse headphones, and the PS eye. None of this works for me. I've tweaked every setting, but no matter which way I adjust things the game fails to correctly recognize me. Using the eye is horrible as it CONSTANTLY picks up the background noise of my surround sound which makes characters respond to gunfire as though I was talking to them. Raising the background noise level to a point where it negates the speakers also means that it won't recognize my voice. I figured I'd try playing with my headphones on, using the built in mic, that's a disaster. 0 things recognized, so I try working with the headphones on while using the eye for mic input. At best, speaking as clearly as I can in absolute silence it's a dice roll of 50/50 and some words NEVER work, important ones, like the word help.

Anyone else have this problem? I don't even have a thick accent! I'm from the northwest and my speech has a totally neutral American accent. What the heck is going on with this?

The worst part is I rear ended my girlfriends truck backing out of the garage to go pick this game up. I swear this game is cursed haha.

I had a huge problem getting it to recognize me in the English version of the game. It's really sad, since in the Japanese version, recognition is awesome and accurate.

I just opted not to use it. It's optional as far as I know, and I hate doing voice anything anyway

Yeah it looks like this is probably the route I'll be taking, which is a shame since when it does work, which is almost never, it's a pretty cool feature.

I couldn't get it to work, I actually forgot that it has voice recognition even though I played through the game like 8 times at this point.

Would have been really fun if it worked perfectly, I was actually looking forward to trying it out before the game came out.

i thought the general consensus was that it simply didn't work well enough to be bothered with

Really? I could have sworn I read all sorts of comments from the demo thread that people had it working really well for them. Then again that may have been the JP version.

I left it on, even though it was very finicky. I just said a simple "Yes" or "no." My favorite line to say was "Love you," however, and I'm glad the game had no problem recognizing me saying it.

An example of me saying it:

Most replies were in bad taste, I felt, but this was a pleasant surprise.

Yeah i played the first area and got big bo and fayes ass shot off with voice commands so i opted out. Its a cool idea just poorly executed.

I turned it off, playing the PC version. Even tweaking the mic settings in-game and on my computer... it wasn't completely broken, but the relationship/trust feature is important for the final battle (AFAIK) so I didn't want to mess with that.

Interesting that it acknowledges curse words, though. heh

I can never get it to recognize damn. Sometimes shit works, but it's usually recognized as another word.

Yeah, it's extremely poor. Just turn it off, it mostly doesn't matter, buttons work fine.

Before I turned it off, the feedback of the game in to the mic would frequently lead to it answering its own questions.

offtopic but this game is on sale at Target with Yakuza Dead Souls combo for $30. Worth it? Looks like a nice shooter ala Kill.Switch from last gen.

Whoa. So I said screw it and just went in without voice recognition. Sucks that I have to use the controller but holy fuck, I just got past the first segment and this game is fantastic.

What the hell? Why was this reviewed so low? This has some of the best shooting mechanics I've played in a long time. The way enemies react to being shot is absolutely phenomenal. Wow.

Yeah, that's pretty much what happened to me. The funny thing was that the game did recognize some sentences and longer words, but i got stuck on tons of monosyllabic words. I'm not a native english speaker, but i like to think that i know how to say "Fuck" or "Shit" correctly. Just like the Giantbomb guys i ended up trying to say it in different tones and even accents, no dice. Greatly enjoyed the actual game, but i stopped bothering with the voice recognition.

It never worked until i swore at my teammates for running in front of my line of fire, then they understood me just fine.

Sorry for being off topic, but BD is $12,49 on Steam right now. I already have it on PS3 but I grabbed it to see how it'll be on max settings! :D

yeah i was playing it earlier and i was like not even opening my mouth and the dude was like all hyped up because he thought we were going to gangbang some asian chick ...lol i had to turn it off after that and other occasions

Like the game, hated the function. I played it in French and I swear every time I tried to say something the game would interpret it as an insult. Switched to English and it was a (little) better but still shitty.

TIL French is language of insults.

/s

You need to use special japanese version of French much like english

I just played through the game last week myself, have to say it only gets better from there man! They vary up what you're doing enough so the game never feels like it's dragging on or anything, I beat the whole thing in like 3 sittings because of how well it just flows. Probably got reviewed the way it did because internet.

It worked pretty well for me on PC, my mic had to be very close to my mouth and I still had to issue voice commands very loudly though.

I thought it was incredibly poor with it not registering my commands 90% of the time. what I don't understand is how it's so poor here but works almost flawlessly in skyrim. what's the deal? developers didn't as good of a job implementing voice commands?

Huh, getting both for $15 wouldn't be too bad. Maybe I should swing by Target today to see if they have them. Probably not though since that deal is like two months old.

I had it in spanish in my playthrough, apart for some complicated phrases it worked good.

Used it in english at the beggining of my second playthorugh, could recognize me also maybe not as good, but it was ok, and Im not even english lol

I have a really cheap microphone with headphones.

Ah yeah, I remeber I had to do the test, if I couldnt use a phrase, I usually used one of the others that had the same significance and worked.

What a timely thread. I just starting playing this last night (despite buying it months ago) and I could not for the life of me get this to work. Half the time it thought I was saying "fuck" or "fire" because it was picking up ambient sound from my speakers.

That being said. The game is really awesome.

Just tried the demo, I really really enjoyed it BUT I have two questions :

1) Does the retail game have actual button icons for the 360 pad instead of keyboard prompts?

2) I turned off voice recognition in the demo but the game still kept putting me in a spot where I couldn't answer people with the game pad. Is this a known bug that was fixed in retail?

Thanks in advance.

1: You have to switch the option on for the button overlays to be 360 instead of comp. I realized this AGES later. :/ "R means X!" etc.

2: No clue, ran into no problems with my mic off and buttons on.

I couldn't get it to work properly either. I ended up not using it and didn't feel like I missed out on much. I imagine it's pretty cool when it's working, though.
