Bionic Lens could give you vision 3x better than 20/20

I'm laughing just a little too much at this thread.

As someone who has had glasses almost their entire life but hates dealing with contacts, this sounds like a perfect solution. I wonder if people who have worn glasses long term will still wear a pair of fake lenses just because we're used to it.

Ruby shades, like Cyclops from XMen.

Im too lazy to read the whole thing, but i would wager that they would first need to research if the brain is capable of utilizing that accurate information.
The actual receptors don't change, so I think information should be the same. Only the lens is upgraded.

I'm calling shenanigans on this.

During my stroke last year blood around my brainstem was pressing up against my optic nerve. While things improved a bit after the bleeding receded, here 2 years after the stroke I'm still having significant issue with double vision, blurred vision, issues with focusing, trouble with saccadic movement, and all sorts of other issues.

It's continued to get a bit better with constant visits to a vision therapist and neuro-ophthalmologist... But it's never fully going to get better...

And, I'm definitely extremely skeptical of anything that says that it can "correct vision..." since generally it usually means "regular issues with vision."

Yeah, this is just for people with problems with the lens of the eyes, if you have problems with the retina (common in people with badly treated hypertension and diabetes), or even problems in the nerve transmitting the impulses from the retina, I seriously doubt this will help at all.

We're getting there with other stuff, but for now, it's way too Deus Ex-y.

Not to say this isn't awesome and great for some people.

No fucking needle near my eyes thank you

Anyone who was interested in laser eye surgery is even more interested in this tech. Not everybody was interested in laser eye surgery. Glasses will still have a market.

But when you get old and develop cataracts, you will welcome this needle over blindness. Just take a chill pill before the actual surgery and you'll be fine.

Meh, I'll probably be dead before anything useful gets here anyway =(

Yes! That astigmatism + near sightedness slays me

So would this work for astigmatism? I am 22. Hopefully after/if it passes human trials and becomes publically available I will be 25.
The Visian Toric Intraocular Contact Lens treats astigmatism effectively and has been available for a few years now. The bionic lens should be able to incorporate the technology used in the aforementioned Visian lens.

I would do this in a heartbeat. I have horrible vision and brutal astigmatism in both eyes. I would love to fix my eyes in eight minutes permanently.

Sounds cool. I wonder what it'd be like though. Seems hard to imagine.

Probably years away and expensive as fuck though.

Probably the only con I can think of
This is what I thought of. The pros would probably outweigh the cons, but it's kind of funny sometimes how clarity can occasionally be negative.

I watched the latest Hobbit movie in IMAX and it was so clear, people were commenting on being able to see every blemish on Orlando Bloom's face, and how old it made him look. I know one may have other complaints about that movie, but that one was particular to the clarity and giant screen. :P

Oh my god, yes.

I'm curious though, would this work for everybody? Not all eye problems are the result of problems with the lenses, right?

you could have it fix the different problems with different lens structures. It not gonna fix everything but most reasons people wear glasses like farsightedness, nearsighted ness, astigmatism should be fixable.

I wonder how this affects your perception of color.

color perception is at the back of the eye isn't it they cone nerves? It wouldn't change anything., its a mechanical fix.

We've had artificial lenses for awhile in cataract surgery. This is kinda just combining a contact with a replaced lens.

Don't worry, you can try freezing yourself! It might
probably not
give you time until more things are invented.

Would certainly like to have such lenses, the thought of having such great eyesight, without having to use glasses.

I would ask for this, era of augmentation at hand, I embrace you!

I'm basically holding off on getting lasik surgery so I can make sure their are no side effects that pop up in the long term and that there isn't better technology that comes along. With all the science and medical advancements happening or on the verge of becoming mainstream, even things that were though impossible a decade ago that may be possible in the next decade, I wouldn't mind putting up with glasses for a few more years if there is tech like this possible.

Whatever you do guys don't take the upgrade chip. Makes the boss fight much harder.
