BioWare and Ubisoft veterans create Yellow Brick Games, will prioritize a craftsmanship approach with its projects

A group of industry veterans from the likes of Bioware and Ubisoft founded independent studio Yellow Brick Games.

Based in Québec City, Canada, the founding team includes Mike Laidlaw, former creative director of the Dragon Age franchise at Bioware, where he spent 14 years of his career. His most recent experience was as creative director at Ubisoft.

He's joined by Thomas Giroux, Jeff Skalski, and Frédéric St-Laurent B, who collectively have experiences at Ubisoft, Bioware, Electronic Arts and Activision Blizzard.

Yellow Brick Games will be led by Giroux as CEO, with Skalski appointed COO and executive producer, Laidlaw chief creative officer, and St-Laurent B game director.

The new studio promised to "further cement the region's leading role in the global entertainment scene" with its first original project, which hasn't been revealed but already has a team of 15 employees.

It seems like the team is not solely based in Québec City, with Frédéric St-Laurent B noting that the rise of remote work has "rewritten the rules," giving them opportunities to recruit outside of the city -- he for instance mentioned Montreal and "other countries."

Yellow Brick Games also said it wants to prioritise a "craftsmanship approach" with its projects, moving away from the type of AAA structure they all have experience with.

"We want to emphasize a 'back-to-basics approach', centered on the pleasure of crafting new game experiences, in a flexible and more personable environment that an independent studio can provide," Giroux said.

Skalski added: "We have learned a lot from working on world-class, multi-year projects with thousands of colleagues and we want to take a different approach. Leveraging a smaller talented team where people come first, we will create amazing worlds and experiences for all others to enjoy. The market is moving fast, and we have no desire to play catchup and chase it when we can influence where it goes. These goals drove us to found Yellow Brick Games."

I dig their logo.

Will patiently wait to see what they are working on.
Not AAA, but maybe Ninja Theory style AA?
Or the so called triple I game?

I know this is supposed to be impressive, but to be honest it just fills me with dread. It's like supervillains teaming up.

It bolds well for their future endeavors, I look forward to see what they come out with. Hopefully something as ambitious as the first Mass Effect.

So many indie studios being opened from veterans.
Last I remember was Warcraft developers making their own studio to make next big RTS.

Gimme that craftmanship approach!

Somehow this reminds me I still haven't played Ancestors The Humankind Odyssey yet, I'm still curious about it

I think the bureaucracy of big companys is starting to burn out veterans and they are realizing they can still make the product they really want to make, and fans will be welcoming without needing to "sell out".

If publishers get less money hungry, knowing they have staple titles that will make money these vets wouldnt need to venture off.
Let devs make what they want to make.....if it fails it fails.....you have tentpoles to keep you afloat.
The truth of the matter is those big AAA titles that rake in money effectively fund the smaller titles.....the only problem is being allowed to make said smaller title while you are a vet at StudioX is usually impossible.....so you need to start your own studio.
And end up getting bought by the very same company that you left.

Seems a lot of industry veterans have done something similar in recent months and years.

It's way too early to judge if even just a single one of those studios will ever actually release a great game.

But I sure as hell love hearing about those ventures and hope we will one day see great games from them.

I like the sound of this.

You saying women can't HANDLE axes or something? Eh? Eh!:

I'm just decades beyond tired of being educated on the fact that women can do tough man things too, this is not a novel idea anymore. Team of 4 men and their logo is a chick with an axe. Ok guys.

What does it represent
I don't know lol. It's a strange logo I'll give you that, but since we haven't seen a single screenshot of their project I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.
I just hope it's not woke.

I dig a chick with an axe....I like living life dangerously 😁😁😁

I mean yeah I'm not shitting on them or their projects or anything, hopefully they kick some ass, just saying the logo by itself with no other info is a little cringe to me.

They definitely sound tired of the factory made Ubisoft style of game making.

Best of luck to them. Hopefully they end up releasing some good stuff.

It seems like a lot of veterans have opened new studios these days. Guess remote work helping in that. I wonder where do they get the money though. But well considering that today it is relatively cheap to enter the gaming...

Just saying making so wild interpretations about a single logo with no other info is a little cringe to me.

That's all that's in the logo, have a look
Yeah, but what are the implications? There's a silhouette of a cartoony girl with a huge axe. Which may be styrofoam for all we know, it's a silhouette. But my point being, so what? You're reading waaaay too much into it.

Studio #421563 made by former veterans of "insert name here" studio (who did what exactly at their former work place?)

Uh huh now show those great games studios made by veterans #1-421562 did.

I'll wait.

Or it's got fuck all to do with what you just made up.

Yellow Brick is a Wizard of Oz reference. There's plenty you could pull from that as potential explanations. They could be making a twist on an Oz game, and that's Dorothy with an axe. It could just be a more conceptual logo with reference to the journey through Oz to see the wizard as an adventure and/or a classic tale, and the axe represents weapons in a more general sense. Could be something I haven't considered.

Or maybe it's their woke agenda they're shoving down your throat. Maybe I'm the hopeful one for looking at it and not even considering that as a possibility. But games are supposed to be fun - have a little hope!

Who are they or more importantly what games have they created?
Mike Laidlaw was the creative director for the Dragon Age games (lead designer for Dragon Age: Origins). He was also one of the writers for Jade Empire.

Thomas Giroux was the creative director for Livelock and The Crew. He also helped with the art/graphics and marketing for several games such as The Amazing Spider-Man, Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory and Double Agent, Rainbow Six: Vegas and Vegas 2.

Frédéric St-Laurent B was the lead game designer for Assassin's Creed Syndicate and its DLC, Jack the Ripper.

Jeff Skalski was also producer for Assassin's Creed Syndicate and Dungeon Keeper (mobile).

Yellow Brick Games? That is obviously Dorothy with the Tin Man's axe. She just cut the head off the Wizard of Oz. Turned him into the Wizard of Ooze. Turned the yellow brick road red, if you know what I mean, with her menstrual blood. Hawtness, I'd say. These 4 dudes probably thought to themselves, we need a name. And they all identified with the Tinman, Scarecrow, Lion and Dorothy.

Only took 14 posts for the thread to move away from discussing the topic and to "DiVeRsItY bAd". The level of projection on display in just these two posts is really, really sad.

Where is the funding coming from? That will determine how much creative freedom they have. If it's Chinese-backed then it's a non-starter.

Felt the same when "The Initiative" was introduced by Phil on stage, then we saw their logo lol.

Very cringe.

The fact it was Dorothy with the Tin Mans axe was the first thing I thought about when I saw the logo for "Yellow Brick" games. Maybe they will make an adult and twisted version of the story like Alice... We can of hope.
