Black, Minority and Ethnic Leads in Videogames

whenever these threads pop up, this is what it sounds like to me:

White guy: Gee, I wonder why there aren't enough non-white lead characters in games? All the poor minorities will feel underrepresented!

Non-white guy: Hey, man, I don't feel underrep-

White guy: SHUT UP, no one cares what you think. By the way, I wonder why there aren't enough non-human lead characters in games?

what i'm trying to say is that it seems like people think they're doing something to benefit a group of people without actually getting input from those people.

Hmmmm I'm the "non-white guy" in this scenario but I also understand why people are concerned. It's a good discussion to have, minority leads in games, even if I don't personally care what color/race/ethnicity they are.

Minority posters have made threads like this one several times and they usually devolve into sensitive white dudes taking offense or posting animals, and other minority posters proudly proclaiming that they don't care about being represented, presumably for approval.

Having broader and better representation isn't just about being a fun bonus in entertainment, it's about getting other people to see you as human

Clementine takes over in Season 2 being both black and a female and a child. That was a doozy.

Whats great is that people love the walking dead BECAUSE of Lee/Clementine not despite it.
Although there are some people who will challenge the idea that Clementine is an african american.

Then show them this picture found in the first episode :

He might look a little bony, but Manny Calavera from Grim Fandango is Latin American and voiced by Cuban American actor Tony Plana.

Still the point and click genre is not doing a good enough job adding diversity in their protagonist cast.

Telltale is even confirming in this article that Clem is the same ethnicity as Lee.

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2012/12/26/creating-clementine.aspx

Telltale had considered other backgrounds for Clementine, such as being from a single-parent family, or being the younger sister of the player character, but found that the pre-established emotional bond between the characters did not fit well, and instead opted to make Lee Everett her father-figure. This led to changing Clementine's race from white to African-American, as to give her the appearance of being Lee's daughter...

ftfy

You are not each and every one of those people.
