Blizzard is changing McCree's name in Overwatch

I'd like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that the real Jesse McCree's great crime in all this was texting his male colleagues in a private group chat about picking up girls at an event for sex.

So in other words, he has been made guilty of being every man in existence.

Was his name KKK Aryan Supremacy Mcree?

If so, I think a name change is absolutely the right thing to do. There's no place for that kind of shit in Overwatch.

he's guilty of leveraging his position of power to discuss bringing in fans up to a suite specifically for sex, who may be willing to go up there thinking of potential professional upside. This is not a 'boys will be boys', and if your group chat is like the one posted, you may want to reconsider whether you're part of the problem.

Anyone in a position of power or influence needs to respect the responsibility thats comes with it, and recognize that if you werent attratcive or funny before you were famous and suddenly youre hilarious and all the women want you, odds are you didnt get hotter, its the job thats giving you shine and you should never leverage that sexually.

There was a blizzard employee named mccree? I don't and have never played overwatch, this all just comes across as an attempt to distract people from other shit blizzard are doing like the destroying of evidence by blizzard HR.
Looks like it's working.

I'm using an extreme example to point out the flaw in logic that simply because its a fictional, digital character means it should remain in tact.

The real life employee was a named sexual predator in the lawsuit and has a history of problematic behavior. If someone on my team who I worked with for years named a character after themselves (like a moron), and then all that stuff came to light and they were removed from the project I wouldn't want their association within the game either. It doesn't take a whole lot of empathy and emotional intelligence to understand that point of view. Obviously there's a big financial/business perspective Activision-Blizzard is taking with their approach here, too.

but it's just easy to hurr durr at the "woke twitter mob" and blue haired feminists or whatever.
Doesn't that completely ignore the feelings of the audience who had no idea about any of that and only play overwatch because they have bonded with the characters? I dont think developers should be making unpopular decisions in games based only on the feelings of the development team. They could easily choose a different name to refer to the character internally, but instead they are taking away a character's identity for all the players, and the characters are arguably the best thing about the game.

Yea, it's a completely empty and pointless gesture. It feels insulting that they think people would even care, that this is somehow redeeming in even a little way. Meanwhile plenty of leadership who had to be aware of the systemic issues are still chillin' making bank.

I don't like the company and I think someone should be punished for the whole scandal, but it's their game - they don't owe you anything. You can voice your opinion and try to change things but in the end if you don't like it you should stop playing.

I agree they don't owe me anything personally because I don't play the game. If I was a McCree main I'd be pissed though. When the game is an embryo I agree it's all up to the dev team, but once the game is released the audience shares in the ownership, or else who are they making the game for, just themselves? To me it's irresponsible to rip an established character's identity out of their still beating chest because of some workplace interpersonal drama. As others have said this reeks of a useless gesture designed to distract from the real scandal and ceremonially murder McCree to atone for Blizzard's sins.

Full of assumptions. He literally said "you misspelled sex", that could very well be meant as a joke. Where are the pictures of girls actually in the room? I haven't seen it.

After the wow /spit emote, this...

Blizz employees seem so desperate. Prolly rightfully so, if the ship sinks they'll prolly have a very hard time landing a new job...

I mean, it kinda makes sense to change the name. But I wish they would've just said "that guy was an asshole and we don't want to honor him" instead of like, prostrating themselves in front of the woke mob and making a big show about diversity and "equity" and shit. It's so embarrassing.

Why do this? Nobody knew that McAgree was named after someone at Blizz, let alone someone who was involved in the recent shenanigans. It's almost as if this is an attempt to deflect anything negative to the real life McAree, because by announcing this, they are shinning a light on him and waaaay more people will be aware of the relationship between him and the character. It's kinda like, "hey, hey! look at this guy over here! he's bad! don't look at us, keep looking at this guy. did we mention he is bad?!!"

Damn shame, I liked both of his light gun arcade games.

But I guess he used his light gun on the wrong staff. Not surprising, people always said he was a Mad Dog.

Jesus. I mean the only fireable thing here is if he did it at work on a work computer? Otherwise this is seriously pushing the boundaries for cancelling someone.
