Blu-ray 2.0 profile in new PS3 update

This really does look like a phenomenal update. Kudos to Sony for this.

BD Live will be nice going forward, as will the media improvements (BD/DVD picture quality, greater DiVx support), but I'm honestly most excited about the improvements to the web browser. I actually spend a good bit of time browsing the web (
GAF
) from my couch, and the more they can improve that, the happier I'll be.

Maybe they'll even make it possible to see GAF spoiler tags with the PS3 browser.

Believe.

The best way to see the spoiler tags when using the PS3's web browser is to quote the poster by holding down the X button. It will open a new browser so you don't have to press L1 to go back to the previous page.

That's my solution.

I hope the mosquito noise filter isn't too overzealous. I hate it when these filters remove any and all film grain and make everything look processed and plastic and fake.
If it's that bad, at least you'll be able to turn it off.

Now, if they added some sort of control link to your actual receiver so you could control volume, sound field, second speaker zone, ect. via Remote Play...that would be the ultimate. Hell, I'd buy a Sony receiver over the Onkyo I'm saving for, if it had that feature, no question. It would be a slam dunk.

Oh snap ... just remembered, my new pre/pro can be controlled via RS-232 AND Ethernet.

So I can either directly talk to the pre/pro, or potentially create my own HTML document if the menuing sucks.

Shit, looks like I'm finally going to have to breakdown and get a PSP.

It should be adjustable. That said, mosquito noise is a specific issue, so it shouldn't go too nuts when filtering at reasonable settings.

'Random noise' reduction is usually what ends up being overzealous when turned up (at least relative to misquito).

Oh naturally, I'm just hoping it's a feature I'll be comfortable using. Mosquito Noise is an unavoidable side effect of MPEG2, and I'd love to see it gone. But I hope it's not at the expense of the rest of the image quality.

Pay attention to the resume feature. Movies authored using BD-J (most of the newer ones and likely all future ones from major studio) will not allow for the resume feature.

Thankfully more and more of those titles allow non-ephemeral bookmarking by the user.

O_o

Man, that must be a badass pre-pro...

Are you the guy with the new Onkyo Pro from the HD Movie thread?

Oh shit, how many times have you mentioned your new pre-pro on one forum?

Edit: Whoever is going to be impressed is now suitably impressed. Give it a rest.

I'm confused, isn't this a file system issue? How could a firmware update fix that?

It was an extension/hack added later to the container format. So Sony simply added support for that extension in the latest firmware update.

Slightly OT, but with all this talk about noise reduction, should it always be on or off? I have a 26 inch Sammy HDTV LCD.

At 26", I wouldn't imagine you'd be able to notice noise. Not unless you're sitting as close to it as you would a computer monitor.

Turn it on and judge for yourself if it looks better or worse. It's always going to differ from person to person.

Yep.

To my knowledge, the Onkyo 905, 875, and Integra 8.8 receivers also have this capability (with the 905 also having PlayForSure streaming capabilities).

Nice edit :p

Regardless, I don't recall mentioning it other than when it was relevant to the discussion. Don't be a hater! :D

So...not much to look forward to here. :( I find the PSP remote stuff interesting just b/c I already do that with Remote Play. I mean, you don't need to turn on your tv if you have Remote Start enabled, so I can play all the media on my PS3 with my PSP just fine. I don't really think I follow.

Also, am I reading it right? Will be now be able to copy files from our PS3 to our PSP wirelessly? I always wondered why the "Copy" function didn't allow transfer of files to the PSP's memory stick. It currently only copies to and from the memory stick in the PS3. PEACE.

The browser needs the ability to put the bookmarks in its own individual folders. It's cumbersome having to short through tons of bookmarks because you can't have folders.

When will Blu-Ray specs be finalized so you actually can start buying it? (Serious question, NOT TROLLING)

2.0 blu-ray players are just coming out and all they add is web access for certain interactive content.

Every Blu-Ray player can play every movie. It's just a few particular extras that are only on a few select movies that can only be used on an upgraded player. These are special features like PIP and the afore-mentioned web access and a couple other things.

Having a PS3 or a 2.0 player makes all of the above irrelevant because their firmware can be easily upgraded over the internet and will always support every special feature that comes on every disc in the future.

One more time for emphasis:
Every Blu-Ray player can play any/every Blu-ray movie. No exceptions.

No, you're reading it wrong. Your PSP has to be connected. There isn't a mention of remote play when talking about the copying of playlists.

People can't talk about their possessions now?

same way it is handled on the pc when you view divx files?
Maybe, maybe not. They might "simply" support the subtitles embedded in DMF .divx files, and in that case almost no one uses them as far as I know. I guess it's not too much of a problem to remux a simple avi file to a .divx one with subs though, even if their XSUB format is anything but standard...

Not Samsung players. The BDP-1200 wasn't able to play several new BD movies for MONTHS (including top Christmas titles like POTC3) and still has trouble playing new titles because its firmware sucks. Top-notch picture quality, but shit compatibility. This is largely because Samsung sucks and bites off more than their 2nd-tier engineers can chew.

Onix said:
Isn't 2GB a limitation of FAT16, not FAT32? I think the limitation it had wasn't file system related.
right. two seperate things. fat32 has a 4GB limit, not a 2GB one. the 2GB limit was divx specific as i remember too, i've played larger files in other formats on my PS3.

you can't patch out the 4gb limit, but you can play compatible files larger than 4gbs through DNLA servers.

What is the last available firmware upgrade?

You know ... I didn't even notice your condescending remark.

Seriously, go fuck yourself, jackass.

Yeah, you tell him...maybe he can use your awesome, expensive, impressive sounding pre/pro to help him get the job done?

Yeah...you tell him Onix! You totally kick ass! I'll best you've slept with more fine women than all of us, too. (...or hot dudes, if that's your pref.)

I can tell by your sweet pre-pro you are rich... Loan plz? Anything you can spare (over $3500) is appreciated. Gift cards are cool, too.

Thanks! Your best buddy on the NeoGAF boards,

-Pristine_Condition

Just kidding.

I am not kidding. A small, (over $3500) loan (interest free) is all I need. I am 100% more reliable than a Nigerian banker.

Yeah ... ‘cause that's the way I view this, or any of my possessions.

Pretentious, I am not.

:p

Rich I am not, though I do okay for myself. A/V (and to a lesser extent, PC tech/networking as it relates to A/V) is my main hobby other than art and music, so I allocate a higher amount of discretionary income to it than most would.

· “Resume play” will enable PS3 to start playing a BD and DVD video at the point it was stopped, even if the disc had been removed.

Woah that's cool I didn't know dvds could do that x_X

· PS3’s Internet browser will be enhanced: Video files directly linked from a Web page will be able to be streamed, and the browser’s view speed will be improved.

Yayness! Please stop asking if I want to run plug-ins to!

· DivX and WMV format videos that are larger than 2GB will be playable.

Hope that comes with fuller divx/xvid support!

Oh. My.

My pants just went completely crazy.

You know, when they brought internet radio to the PSP I went crazy. This is nearly as good (or better depending on how you look at it), and really is impressive. Good job integrating things Sony, this is a fantastic vision and it's slowly charging along, getting better with every single update.
