Blu-Ray.com reviews Xbox One's Blu-Ray Player functionality

Sony went backwards with the bluray features because it doesn't have kinect......? Or is the ps4 bluray player worse than dirt?

PS4's Blu-Ray playback capabilities and media features are hindered by a new and underdeveloped OS. Sadly, it seems like it might take a while for Sony to even catch up to the PS3's media capabilities, which is the far better media playback device.

At least I had those issues, don't know if the HDMI lip sync doesn't work properly with my setup. But as I said, I never had audio/video sync issues with any other device in my setup.

Yeah, but to assume you're the only one having those issues is ludicrous!

lol j/k ;) ... just surprised that two such new pieces of hardware seemingly aren't as good for BR movie playback as a 7 year old console is all (Especially given the heavy multimedia focus of the Xbone).

More important things to be focusing on for now I guess though... for both.

Voice commands are a dream and they work very well at a high percentage rate of accuracy. The failure to navigate disc menus with verbal commands or hand gestures is disappointing, and that the Kinect more often than not fails to recognize commands during loud playback can be an annoyance

So do voice commands work well or not? I'm confused by this.

They are great except when in menus or watching a movie?

My point was the review experienced playback issues, major ones, with PS4, and experienced none with Xbone. Again, you *might* not experience these issues yourself, but that's the experience of the reviewer. It happened on two of the discs they tried, but that doesn't mean there are only two existing BDs that would have experienced issues.

well, they used firmware 1.50... maybe issues are already fixed in 1.51 released?

New architectures, new operating systems. It's going to take a while for the maturity level to reach that of the PS3, which already had hardware more than capable enough for the task. The improved hardware in the PS4 and Xbox One aren't going to contribute much here...in fact the significant power usage of the PS4 is seriously going to hurt its long term viability as a Blu-Ray player since it's simply going to be too loud for some of the more demanding consumers' entertainment centers.

This site again?

As I said before the PS4 BD player is exactly the same as the PS3 player except you have faster loading movies.

The PS3 BD player was widely considered to be the best on the market throughout the lifespan of the system lol. Now copy / paste the same stuff to a new system and making it faster is a bad thing ... the best becomes bad? Odd.

The gripes this site has I do not experience at all. They must have a faulty machine or something.

3D support is currently missing. they had major issues playing back two of their randomly selected movies on the PS4. I don't see how you can claim PS4 playback is the same as PS3. My PS3 played all my 3d Blu-Rays in 3D.

I don't think any real home theater enthusiast will have 3D in their setup. So for them, it's a mute point. Still, there really isn't a reason that the new consoles shouldn't support it.
seriously, what the hell is this nonsense?

That command never worked for me during Blu-Ray playback (but perfectly during games). Is it real?

Apart from that, I actually had issues with the player. Oddly, sound and picture are often, but not always, not in perfect sync. The very same movie sometimes works and sometimes doesn't work, and I could not yet track down the reason. It also doesn't always remember the exact position where I left the movie to do something else. I never had these problems with the PS3.

Hmm, odd.

I'll be trying all this out soon enough with BluRays. I have a Theater Room with a Sony HW30 projector, and a 106-inch perm Da-Lite screen I will be hooking my X1 too shortly.

I had my PS3 BluRay as my main player and the picture looked absolutely gorgeous on my 106inch screen. I sold my PS3 about 3 weeks ago hoping the X1 would take it's place, I'm just waiting on hooking up my DirecTV in my theater and then my X1 will folllow. I'm going to be very disappointed if the X1's picture quality isn't up to par with the PS3's! :(

My XB1 blu-ray app went out of sync when I used rewind, had to restart the app. Hope that was a one off or it gets fixed with an update.

Yeah...no.

I know a lot of enthusiasts who are getting into the 3D setups. Gravity in 3D is breathtaking.

Do either PS4 or Xbox One support 3d Blu-Rays as of November 25th, 2013? The review suggests no, but that can't possibly be true, can it?

Wait, the PS4 doesn't even have a persistent always-off toggle for BD Live? :O

I'm curious about this statement. What blu-ray functionalities did they take out of the PS4?

I've heard multiple times now that the PS3 is better at blu-rays than the PS4, but I don't know in what specific ways.

I haven't noticed anything major, but it seems like the PS4 has no option to change the time display; i.e. switch between the time of the entire program, to the time of the specific chapter you're viewing. I use that a lot so I can stop watching something right at a chapter break, annoying that it's not there. That's just one example, I think there are a few little things like that. It's enough that I think I'll keep watching blu-rays on my PS3 until they update the firmware. And either release a remote or make the PS3 remote compatible.

They don't do anything for menu navigation because the menu options aren't hardcoded--the one disk may say 'special features', the next 'bonus features', and the third 'extras'.
There's nothing MS can hardcore the Kinect to understand, so you're stuck with a controller.

And they later indicate that in-movie commands were only an issue for them when things got loud--they later say they think it would work better in a family room where you're unlikely to be listening at reference volume.

it's true that they don't. I can confirm first hand that the PS4 doesn't play 3D movies. I'd read the confirmation before it came out, but I still tried Avatar and it played in 2D. Xbox One doesn't currently support native 3D output *for anything*. PS4 supports it (Trine 2 is native 3D) but as of yet the Blu-Ray software doesn't support 3D blu-rays. It should be coming in a firmware update, at some point.

Right, got it.

isnt PS4 quieter when playing BDs than PS3 and XB1? Its BD drive seems to be quieter according to tests. Also, PS4 and PS3 spend same amount of power usage. XB1 spends tiny bit less.

I think the main fact here is that right now, everyone has better BD player than PS4 will ever be, and they probably paid at least 4x for it. PS4 will never again be main BD player because dedicated players will always do it better. At very least they have chip designed to spend 4x less power, and million more outputs.

What they need to do is to make it "good enough" BD player with good picture and 3D options.

I have checked various AV forums for reviews and seems like very few people are actually using PS4/XB1 for BD... about similar amount of issues was reported for both.. basically nobody really cares. Back when PS3 was introduced, threads there had hundreds of posts within week.

Believe it or not this is very important in my decision on which one I'll get.
Been waiting for some real world good enthusiast reviews on bluray functions n features.

Ok thanks for the details!

Some people wish they had the chance to kill Hitler, might be a selling point for them.

I don't understand this part. My question is why couldn't the PS4 be at least equal to the blu-ray player of the PS3?

That's the least I would have expected. I certainly didn't expect it to be worse than PS3.

I wouldn't base your decision off of this.

"Star Trek: Into Darkness Audio Glitch"

I can't replicate this glitch but I'm using the latest firmware 1.51. I'm also using bitstream with my 5.1 setup. I assume this was fixed in 1.51?

Note: I do not have Beauty and the Beast, so I'm not sure about that. I have watched Star Trek just to see the issue. Normally I would use my dedicate Blu-Ray player.

PS4: Pro not as loud during playback.
Xbox One: Pro voice command. Note:louder the movie the lower the accuracy.
Neutral: Video quality and Audio quality (going by HDMI for both)

Can anyone confirm Beauty and the Beast with the latest firmware?

So doesn't the XB1's crushed gamma affect media playback? That alone would make it worthless as a blu-ray player for me.

No. At least for 1080p native Blu-Ray's this doesn't seem to be a problem. The scaler isn't being applied.

Note: I believe all Blu-Ray titles are 1080p.

Note 2: I haven't tested DVD playback, but I don't really watch DVD's at this point this may cause crushed blacks if the upscaler is being used..

I think a more common defect like the drive defect/grinding issue garners more response. Is there a known bug with those two movies?

When Blu-ray first launched disc mastering was at issue on some titles, but at this point? Unlikely. It's probably a player software issue at this point. I know GAF wouldn't be GAF without grousing, but this isn't a huge issue for either console IMO. Both players will be updated many times throughout their life cycle. At this point in time, Blu-ray.com prefers the XB1's player. That's all.

So what does the Xbone BRD do the PS4's doesn't?

Well, for an example: My PS4 refuses to play my "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" BD among a few others (it just goes to a black screen), whereas the X1 has played everything I've put in it.

I'm keeping my PS3 for BD playback for now.

Could you list some of the other movies so I can try? Guess I've lucked out so far,

I understand you want a good player, but reviews like this are just a slice in time. The PS4 and XB1 will update their players over time. My guess is both players will rock after a few updates. And BTW, if you want a good Blu-ray player you might take a look at the OPPO BDP-103D (Darbee Edition) player with Darbee circuitry built-in.

Nobody is replacing their OPPO for these. It's not even close.

I don't remember for sure off the top of my head. I'll try again tonight and update, but from what I remember for PS4:

Worked:

The Police: Certifiable

Did Not Work:

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
Disney WoW Calibration Disc

I tried several Disney blu-rays but I can't remember which ones worked and which didn't. All the DVDs worked, though

Darn...I don't own any Disney movies. :-/ Is it bad that I like to test things. :-P

The Xbox One works with remotes. My Harmony One controls it well.

Woot! Something else to test. That's actually pretty cool!

Either MS or Sony needs to update with 3D Blu Ray playback ASAP.

Not having it at launch is ridiculous imo.

Yup, just select Microsoft, then type in Xbox One for the device.

There is no discrete on or discrete off, unfortunately. And some of the stuff is mislabeled. But it works.

Hopefully MS will put out an official remote, too.

I bought a PS3 slim for playing Blu-rays and then bought a dedicated Blu-ray player a few weeks later. Consoles are shit at this.

No they're not, or at least the PS3 isn't. Both dedicated players I had were awful and I've used the PS3 as my Blu player for two years now. I'm sure higher end dedicated players are equal to the PS3 or better, but the standard ones you get for $100-200 are clunky trash. My Samsung 3D BR player couldn't make it through anything without stuttering and freezing in places the PS3 played with zero issues whatsoever.

Even with the next gen consoles in the rack, the PS3 will remain the Blu-ray player for the moment.

Ugh, no. Do people forget that the vast majority have either garbage internet speeds and/or data caps? Physical media for movies is not going anywhere for the foreseeable future.

This. Physical media for MUSIC is still reasonably strong. Video is going to take longer to go away than music.

Protip: buy Japanese. My Panny is much more pleasant than the PS3. Pretty sure a dedicated Sony would be too.

That's lame what's the point of a remote if you have to still turn the system on/off/standby. Hopefully the get that fixed. I'm going to try it when I get home. :-)

I was using the android app as my PS4 remote, it actually allowed you to enter suspend and shut the console off. If it's in suspend mode it'll turn the console on for you when you load the app on your phone. It actually surprised me...

Until it didn't work with Resident Evil Blu-Ray, Amazon Prime or Netflix. >.> The Netflix app worked though, and let's you navigate the PS4 via your phone. The really odd thing is the PS button works the whole time. Hope they fix that.

I hope this no 3D crap is because they rushed these out the door and not because they're cheaping out on licensing.

XB1 badly needs a remote. Kinect doesn't cut it.
