Blu-Ray.com reviews Xbox One's Blu-Ray Player functionality

Wow, the war takes its place in every single thread these days.

God forbid that a reviewer prefers one system over another because of quality, functions or whatever.

So weird that the Xbox is the better Blu-Ray player as of now. Myself, I have been holding off on starting my Blu-Ray collection until the next-generation so I'm happy to know its a capable product. I'm not an AV nut or anything so I think I'll be fine.

Not really

+ Harmony One support (includes toggle on/off button) - verifying later
= Smartglass isn't a benefit... It really isn't.
- Problems with Stutter (Setting it to 24 HZ seems to get rid of this US/Pal reports as well but might be the same thing - Doesn't apply to PS4)
+ No problems with Disney movies (No Disney movies to confirm/deny - Actually we own Brave so I'll check later)
+ Blue Ray loads faster
- No controller/3D support.
+ Kinect navigation
- Xbox one is louder during playback

Picture quality and sound are the same with both.

I assume the Disney problems are caused by Disney's custom encryption that should get patched. Should is the keyword, but until then Xbox One for Disney playback.

What exactly are you talking about?

What can you do with your remote during Blu Ray playback?

Everything. I turned on HDMI Control on the PS4. TV remote works like a champ (I hear it doesn't work in NetFlix yet, but does in Amazon. Which is odd since they were reversed on the PS3).

Enabling 24Hz got rid of the stutter. Seriously, play some Blu-ray movies and see if you see the stutter. I ran multiple movies and switched back and forth. Movies tried: Avatar, 300, The Dark Knight, and The Avengers.

I noticed the stutter the first night I got the Xbox when I was running audio tests. I was skipping back and forth between scenes and the stutter is very bad. Sometimes it's worse than other times. I do not encounter that with PS4 or my standalone Blu-ray player. It's not motion judder, it's actually stuttering and then correcting itself. So far, 24Hz does seem to have eliminated it.

I'm in the US, by the way.

I was just playing Avatar and in scene 2, the giant yellow work truck stutters across the screen (without 24Hz on). lol

Edit: Now, I just need Xbox One to allow me to let my receiver run the audio so I can have DTS-HD MSTR on the LED instead of PCM. I need it to say it. Bothers me. :)

That would be great to hear.
Another review linked on GAF 2(?) days ago, said that only very basic stuff works during BluRay playback.

Can you open pop-up menus or jump thorugh chapters?
Who is the maker of you TV and remote?

so both PS4 and Xbox One are bad Blu-ray players.

Sony BDP S5100 is $90/80 and it's one of the best blu-ray players in the market, how in hell these $400 and $500 "all on one entertainment machines" don't have good blu-ray players and features and adjustments in them :/

What's exactly better? My PS3 plays Blu-rays just fine and they always sound/look good. I really don't know what you mean.

Im a huge fan of the XB1 but for whatever reason with the same TV calibration settings, my PS3 bluray movies looked better to me to the naked eye. Still going to use the PS3 for Blurays.

Can you snap a Blu-ray while playing a game?

I've always been annoyed that PS3 doesn't let you access the XMB while watching a disk.
I do it every now and then while using PlayTV, and it's nice.

I'm super annoyed to learn that the PS4 behaves the same way.

Very much the same here, not liking the Bluray playback on the Xbox One, and it seems to have some lip sync issues aswell, hopefully they can fix this in an update for the app

Xbox One definitely doesn't have the better Blu-ray player in my experience.

My experience using Blu-ray on my Xbox One:
Lip-syncing being off by a bit

Tries to force my HDTV to a weird resolution of 2880x1080 before switching back to 1920x1080 when going back into the Blu-ray app to resume movie

Has a black screen that will sit there when pressing the Xbox button while playing movie or when going back into movie from Xbox menu

Doesn't have bitstreaming

Has some slight stuttering with 24 Hz disabled
