So I'm going to get one of these in a couple weeks, but I'm having trouble deciding which kind to get.

Sedan

Convertible

So here's thing, I'm buying. So I'm trying to think down the line as much as possible.

Here are the pros and cons that I've come up with.

Convertible
+ Top Down
- Heavier
- Handling not as good
- Slower
- Less back seat space
- Smaller trunk

Sedan
+ 4 Doors
+ Lightest of the batch
+ Trunk Space
- Not a convertible

So yeah, my dilemma is, I loooove driving around with the top down (los angeles weather ftw), but when all i said and done, the convertible just isn't a real M3. Sure, it makes all the right sounds, but since the performance isn't up to par, I might as well get a 3.35i

Anyways, all you car nuts out there, please persuade me and tell me why i should go with the sedan, or the convertible.

Here's the math:

How often do you need an extra second from 0-60, or another 10mph, versus how often do you wish to drive around town with the top down and the car full of ladies?

Also, aesthetically, the convertible destroys the sedan.

I'd go with the sedan. I don't think the convertible outweighs all the cons and it looks a bit tacky for a luxury car.

Like you said, you should just get a 335i convertable if you feel you would be wasting your money on a m3 convertable.

Have you test driven them yet?

yeah, as much sense as that makes, i don't want to settle with a 3.35i, i want an M.

i guess i really just don't wanna give up on the idea of a convertible : /

Does America get the coupe M3? That's definitely my pick. The E92 3-series sedans look like Kia Rios.
america does get the coupe, but again, I'm thinking down the line, and i know 2 doors is just gonna be a pain in the ass. Atleast in the case of the convertible, it has the added benefit of bringing the top down.

1. Fuck you you bastard for being to afford one of the greatest cars to grace bitumen

2. Convertibles are shit and are only useful 4 days of the year

3. The hard top looks ten times better.

1. I'm buying it in cash : p
2. I live in los angeles
3. the convertible is a hard top, and it also sports the greatest hard top design ever created.

Sorry, by hardtop I should have said sedan. I'm aware of the convertible hard top. Got my wording wrong.

You live in Los Angeles yes, but still, I've always felt you need a VERY particular kind of day to be able to truly enjoy a convertible.

But then again, I live in Melbourne Australia. I'll be in Los Angeles on my honeymoon next year so I'll have a better idea of your weather.

But in Melbourne, you'd be lucky to get 4 days a year that are PERFECT for convertible driving. ie. Not so hot that sitting in the sun burns the fuck out of you, or not warm enough that driving with the top down is too cold.

yea they do and I definitely prefer the Coupe to the Sedan. I really don't like the Sedan's tail lights.

My sister drives the 335 convertible and she loves it. The hard top works like a dream and "feels" like a coupe. Get the convertible. You're in LA, you will use it all the time. The sedan looks generic - and you'll use sunchine way more than the perf.

It's LA trafiic, when are you ever even getting to 60mph, never mind more?

why is there even a debate..............................unless u got kids and need to make a wise "family considering decision" which u prlly dont since ur considering a convertible in the first plc...

dude ur gonna get a sedan later in ur life........no question about it....so get the convertible now...DUH!

Honestly I think its a waste of money to get a M3 convertible.

If you want a convertible go for a 335i, twin turbo which can be chipped and supposedly make you almost as fast as a M3. Turbos are awesome too.

I live in the LA area too and for the most part having a M3 does get you looks but most girls are oblivious to the model trim if that is your goal.

The performance aspect is not really worth it if you do not plan to attend track days and such, getting one as a daily driver is a waste.

So IMO sedan/coupe or bust for the M3.

Also you should consider the C63 AMG, those things are beasts!

I'd be wary of not having the trunk space.

However, look there is a value to getting exactly what you want. Seems you want a convertible car... just get that shit.

I don't like the m3 convertible, but the m3 sedan is a sexy beast.
Congrats either way, I strive to be like you one day.
or just get an R8

Save the money go with a 335i coupe convert right now the price is right. And it saves a bit more gas too. Better for a daily driver.use the rest of your M3 budget to get some nice things for the 335i or another car...

Out of those 2 I would go with the sedan but I think the coupe is better. I actually was pricing out the coupe today on the BMW website. Its definately in my price range but priorities come first..like my upcoming marriage and a house.

He's getting either car cash, I doubt he cares how much gas costs.

Your performance concerns can only be addressed by test driving the two cars.

Not that it's comparable, but when Top Gear tested the F430 vs the F430 Spyder, the regular F430 couldn't pull away on the track at all. The extra weight etc didn't seem to negatively impact it noticeably. Unless you're doing 1/4 mile drags, I'd say off the top of my head if you want the convertible and it looks great with the top up and down...go for it. Though, what the hell am I thinking...I'd never own one of those cars :P ... test drive them both, then decide.

Exactly. He lives in LA. You never know when a bum might fall out from behind some bushes onto the road.

TRUNK SPACE.

I've driven a convertible and I LOVE IT! I don't think most users here have experienced being in a convertible. Test drive both of them and decide yourself.

Convertible
+ Top Down
- Very gay/flamboyant

Please don't take this the wrong way - you might even actually be gay (I am myself), in which case go for it.

I just think there's something very very emasculating about taking an incredibly fast, grunty car and taking the top off it. I can just see some queen rolling up in it (top down of course) and screaming "heeeey!" to his friends outside some trendy cafe. Not before completely curbing the likely very expensive wheels thoughÂ…

Again, don't be offended - that's just how I see convertibles. Leave them to the 50 year old valley women who no longer have a need for their 7-seater SUV.

I'm thinking of getting a 3-series convertible, but the tail lights and roof curvature look kinda goofy IMO. The coupe looks so much nicer from the back.

Also, I'd give some thought to whether you can really use an M3 in LA. I hit 65mph maybe twice a month if I'm lucky.

Right on. I'm probably getting an M3 at the end of this month/beginning of next month. I think they all look great but it sounds like you have your heart set on the cabrio so you should go with that. I wouldn't worry about the performance hit due to the weight of the roof in a convertible. If performance was what you wanted you'd be going with the coupe in the first place.

Personally, I like the idea of a cabrio but I could never see myself actually driving that around town. There is something so inherently ostentatious about a convertible car that I just don't agree with. That's just not my style. Maybe if I lived in LA. I'm getting the coupe.

Sedan or Coupe. A convertable M3 is not an M3 as has been mentioned

also, if you're buying it in cash, care to throw a few k my direction for my own car project? :) I'm in AU so it wouldn't even be that much right now..... ;)

If you live in LA, and the convertible is a hardtop, go with it.

Sunshine and teh ladies ftmfw.

Even though I love it here, he would have to consider those super sunny days, and the only days it wont be above 85 F are gonna be cloudy days.

During the summer it will be useless since all the air round here is gonna be hot.

Convertible....

Live in LA... why even kid yourself?

Convertible, seriously.
You'll regret the sedan. You'll also get much better gas mileage with the top down vs. the air condition on.

I'm really shocked at all the convertible recommendations. But that's what I get for living in a climate where it rains. BLAST YOU SUNNY CALIFORNIA!

I miss weather... I'm still getting used to this perfect weather every single day thing.
It's starting to weird me out. (From New Orleans, now in LA for about 6+ months now). It literally doesnt ever rain, it's been months since it rained. And since I've been here, its only rained like 3 maybe 4 times total. Crazy huh?

I drive an E92 - 328i Coupe, so I speak from experience. I love it, and think it looks 10 times better then a 4 door.

Save your cash, man, get yourself a 335i Conv.

I need days where it feels like it's OK to be staying inside, because in the back of my head, I know that everybody's inside too because of the rain. It makes ya feel less like a bum.
