Ok, thanks. I'll keep an eye out for Twilight Struggle then. The concept of a solitaire (war) board game is new to me and I'm quite interested. What would be a good introduction to the genre?

If Silent War is too big for you, you might want to check out VP's Zulus on the Ramparts! (plays fast, fun game), DVG's Field Commander: Rommel (or Alexander if you prefer Classical period fare) , or Decision Games' RAF re-release.

I like Silent War a lot because I feel like the game is a superb simulation of the role of the US submarine fleet commander in WW2. There's tension, frustration, and elation as the game progresses, and part of the real challenge is to not get put on tilt (which happened historically, many sub captains were relieved of command out of anger at poor performance despite overwhelming evidence of faulty torpedoes) and stick with your overall current engagement and withdrawal doctrines instead of pushing things to far in an attempt to please the brass and instead getting your subs killed.

Too bad the full game takes about 120-150 hours to play through the full campaign, and consumes a not-small tabletop in the process.

BTW, it's always good to have a solitaire game going. Even if it's just on a Cyberboard/VASSAL so you don't actually have anything set up. Really good for learning a new 2-4 player game so you can explain it to others, too.

If you are looking for something one level below Frag Hardcore, but above something like Memoir 44, take a look at Conflict of Heroes--has a solitaire mode built in too.

Do all of the Conflict of Heroes games have a solitaire mode built-in?

A friend of mine works for a company that distrubuted Days of wonder stuff in Europe, so she got me small world ( and ticket). Super enjoyable, some of the random combos of powers and race effects that come up are amazing

Another few pluses for Conflict of Heroes is that it's really well put together-very high quality components-and you get a game that is a good stepping stone to fully hardcore games like ASL/ATS/Panzer Grenadier if you want to go off the proverbial deep end. You'd also ease right into a computer game like Steel Panthers (which is free and VERY popular, about as popular online as wargames get) too, which would open up a lot of really meaty gaming.

Another choice along those lines is the Lock'n'Load games, which are also good and fill a similar niche.

Anyone here going to GenCon? Flynn and I were going to try and meet up last year but never did. All night boardgaming sessions FTW.

I don't think I'm making it to GenCon this year. :( I think PAX is going to be my big nerd trip. My who GenCon crew is flying out to Seattle. We'll have five or six, so that ought to be great for all night game sessions.

Real men go to PAX east! :D

astrocon: my living room, every other saturday (roughly). featuring all the hot new titles, free food and drink, and celebrity appearances.

I bought Robo Rally the other day, I can't wait to play it, it looks like a lot of fun. It would be awesome if they re-released all of the old expansions.

My wife and I are almost certainly going to PAX (Seattle one). I toyed with the idea of putting aside my other projects to get one of my board games in a prototype/playable form by then, but it's not happening.

Newark, NJ right across the street from the Prudential Center where the beloved New Jersey Devils play. If we get enough pre-registrations, we will move things in there.

The next astrocon will feature the original WotC RoboRally and all of its expansions, Union Pacific and Survive!, as well as surprise.

Aphoushole, did you find that RR copy new? Cause if so I must kill you in jealous rage.

Also, is NO ONE going to PAX East? Boooo
So far off; I will probably go if I'm still on the east coast then.

Oh I forgot to mention.

I found someone who wants to trade my boring Agricola for their OOP Betrayal at House on the Hill.

Even if it isn't as "refined" as Agricola, it will still get more plays.

One down, HeroQuest and Fortress America to go.

Goddammit. I've been dying to play this for a long time. 1 of my favorite games. I'll have your babies if you bring it to PAX.

Right on. Lets make a point to meet up. We'll be playing tons of board games.

Definitely going to PAX and PAX East. I'll be the extremely large gentleman in the wool tweed walking hat, hopefully much less large by PAX East.

It's new, of course. It's the Avalon Hill edition, not the really old edition. While we're talking about RR: I am disappointed in the cardboard quality in the components. Maybe I'm just spoiled by non-Hasbro owned publishers.

So do all AH games have components of low quality?
Actually, some of the later AH stuff that Hasbro did has some decent quality stuff. Stuff like Queen's Gambit, History of the World, and Battle Line come to mind.

Queen's Gambit in particular had some really nice figures, and is probably the best playing boardgame out there based on a movie-license that still retains an accurate connection to the material it's based on. It's also the best thing to ever come out of Episode 1 aside from maybe the pod-racer video game. Hard to find these days though, with it being OOP and all. So glad I picked it up when it came out. :D

Glad to see that it's not the case. The game looks pretty good and interesting as well.

Would you care to explain the what the 3-level building is for?

Unhappy King Charles (GMT Games LLC)
Warriors of God (Multi Man Publications, Inc.)

Best World War II Board Game:

Combat Commander Pacific (GMT Games LLC)
Conflict of Heroes (Academy Games)
Storm Over Stalingrad (Multi Man Publications, Inc. )
The Devil's Cauldron (Multi Man Publications, Inc.)
Valor of the Guards (Multi Man Publications, Inc.)

Fields of Fire (GMT Games LLC)
Day of Heroes (Lock n Load Publishing, LLC)

Some neat games in that mix. I'm going to try out a Lock'n'Load game as soon as I get through a few of the GMT games sitting on my shelf.

Hey does anyone here play any of the 18XX games? I've been reading up on them and it seems like it would be interesting to try one out.

Yes, but I'd recommend having someone teach it to you rather than trying to figure out yourself. 18xx games are fairly long, definitely not for those with short attention span.

gaah might not be able to make pax after all--good chance i'll be out of the country that week. we'll see, still holding out hope.

anyway, goin out of town this weekend and gonna get some 2p gamin in:

Race for the Galaxy + Expansions 1 & 2: Learning the takeover rules right now. As if people weren't already freaked out enough by the symbols in this game.

Battle Line: Perhaps the perfect light 2p game.

Catan Card Game: Probably gonna just go with the base game.

Galaxy Trucker: Comeback kid of the year. Have had this game on the brain since we started playing it again a few weeks ago.

That's the palace where the Naboo player's win condition is. They have to occupy the throne room where the Federation Viceroys are, but they have to get up there with more units than the Trade Federation player has in that room. With the right cards the Federation player can reinforce the room from the Gungan battlefield, while the Naboo player can try to scale up through the windows to save time. The winner of the Jedi duel can also come into the picture and start hacking through the fodder units. Anakin destroying the command ship will result in all Federation droids shutting down, essentially winning the game for the Naboo side (he's effectively a timer for the Federation side, though they can try and stall the timer further through cards).

Here's some review links if you want to know more:

I would be surprised if anyone in the city I lived in even heard of 18XX. The 18XX I was thinking of getting is 1861, since I know of a store that has it. I've read that it's simpler than most 18XX games (most notably the stock market doesn't have much influence on the game play.

That Star Wars Ep. 1 game seems like it would be very fun to play. I'm assuming it's hard to find nowadays?

It's definitely one of the top 30 or so non-wargame holy grails. Helps that it's licensed and there's basically zero chance it'll ever get reprinted.

Reposting for the new page because I don't want people to miss out.

Seems like everybody makes a big deal out of the symbols in the game. I haven't played it myself but I don't how it could be that bad.

Agreed, it's rather overblown. Small contingent of BGG though absolutely insists that the symbols make the game a Heavy. :lol

For a Medium though, it is fairly intimidating to casuals in my experience, but the symbols are only a small and superficial part of that.

Wow, this is a huge thread that I've somehow never noticed before.

I've been playing a bunch of Settlers lately since I finally got it back from my brother. Everyone I've introduced it to is really into it, natch.

I'm wondering if anybody can recommend some games in that same spirit that would be good to take to the beach. One of my favorite beach board games is Scrabble, and I picked up a nice vintage deluxe edition for my vacation later in August.

Did you get the expansion for Galaxy Trucker yet? I've read the rules for the expansion and it seems like masochism in board game form.

No, but it's now at the top of my list for my next order.

If you are into abstracts, Hive is a very good tile game that fits in small little pouch. Not particularly Catanish, but very well suited for beach play.

Catan of course has a travel edition, as well as a dice game. Not very many themed strategy games that are beach friendly (i.e., waterproof and sans tons of tiny pieces), but I don't know how "beach friendly" you're looking for, so I'm assuming a fairly rigorous standard. Other travel editions to look into are Ingenious and Blokus, both abstracts.

A friend and I have been playing Axis & Allies for a couple of years now. I know about risk, but I was wondering if anyone knew any other "Axis & Allies" type games?
