Anyone here going to GenCon? Flynn and I were going to try and meet up last year but never did. All night boardgaming sessions FTW.
aphoushole said:Ok, thanks. I'll keep an eye out for Twilight Struggle then. The concept of a solitaire (war) board game is new to me and I'm quite interested. What would be a good introduction to the genre?
Fragamemnon said:If Silent War is too big for you, you might want to check out VP's Zulus on the Ramparts! (plays fast, fun game), DVG's Field Commander: Rommel (or Alexander if you prefer Classical period fare) , or Decision Games' RAF re-release.
I like Silent War a lot because I feel like the game is a superb simulation of the role of the US submarine fleet commander in WW2. There's tension, frustration, and elation as the game progresses, and part of the real challenge is to not get put on tilt (which happened historically, many sub captains were relieved of command out of anger at poor performance despite overwhelming evidence of faulty torpedoes) and stick with your overall current engagement and withdrawal doctrines instead of pushing things to far in an attempt to please the brass and instead getting your subs killed.
Too bad the full game takes about 120-150 hours to play through the full campaign, and consumes a not-small tabletop in the process.
BTW, it's always good to have a solitaire game going. Even if it's just on a Cyberboard/VASSAL so you don't actually have anything set up. Really good for learning a new 2-4 player game so you can explain it to others, too.

Flynn said:I don't think I'm making it to GenCon this year.I think PAX is going to be my big nerd trip. My who GenCon crew is flying out to Seattle. We'll have five or six, so that ought to be great for all night game sessions.
ditto that (at least that's the plan unless other obligations get in the way).platypotamus said:My wife and I are almost certainly going to PAX (Seattle one).
AstroLad said:astrocon: my living room, every other saturday (roughly). featuring all the hot new titles, free food and drink, and celebrity appearances.
Gatekeeper said:Well, where the fuck is this at?
platypotamus said:and how much is admission?
AstroLad said:Newark, NJ right across the street from the Prudential Center where the beloved New Jersey Devils play. If we get enough pre-registrations, we will move things in there.
The next astrocon will feature the original WotC RoboRally and all of its expansions, Union Pacific and Survive!, as well as surprise.

So far off; I will probably go if I'm still on the east coast then.Neverfade said:Aphoushole, did you find that RR copy new? Cause if so I must kill you in jealous rage.
Also, is NO ONE going to PAX East? Boooo

AstroLad said:RR has hilariously crappy components. The pieces are OK and the flags are the only thing better than the original.
Actually, some of the later AH stuff that Hasbro did has some decent quality stuff. Stuff like Queen's Gambit, History of the World, and Battle Line come to mind.aphoushole said:So do all AH games have components of low quality?

Queen's Gambit in particular had some really nice figures, and is probably the best playing boardgame out there based on a movie-license that still retains an accurate connection to the material it's based on. It's also the best thing to ever come out of Episode 1 aside from maybe the pod-racer video game. Hard to find these days though, with it being OOP and all. So glad I picked it up when it came out.![]()

That's the palace where the Naboo player's win condition is. They have to occupy the throne room where the Federation Viceroys are, but they have to get up there with more units than the Trade Federation player has in that room. With the right cards the Federation player can reinforce the room from the Gungan battlefield, while the Naboo player can try to scale up through the windows to save time. The winner of the Jedi duel can also come into the picture and start hacking through the fodder units. Anakin destroying the command ship will result in all Federation droids shutting down, essentially winning the game for the Naboo side (he's effectively a timer for the Federation side, though they can try and stall the timer further through cards).abhoushole said:Would you care to explain the what the 3-level building is for?
Zalasta said:Yes, but I'd recommend having someone teach it to you rather than trying to figure out yourself. 18xx games are fairly long, definitely not for those with short attention span.
Yeah it's like $150+.That Star Wars Ep. 1 game seems like it would be very fun to play. I'm assuming it's hard to find nowadays?

Reposting for the new page because I don't want people to miss out.aphoushole said:What board games are people going to play this weekend? I'm not sure myself, maybe Space Alert or Robo Rally.
AstroLad said:Race for the Galaxy + Expansions 1 & 2: Learning the takeover rules right now. As if people weren't already freaked out enough by the symbols in this game.
Agreed, it's rather overblown. Small contingent of BGG though absolutely insists that the symbols make the game a Heavy. :lolaphoushole said:Seems like everybody makes a big deal out of the symbols in the game. I haven't played it myself but I don't how it could be that bad.
AstroLad said:Galaxy Trucker: Comeback kid of the year. Have had this game on the brain since we started playing it again a few weeks ago.
No, but it's now at the top of my list for my next order.aphoushole said:Did you get the expansion for Galaxy Trucker yet? I've read the rules for the expansion and it seems like masochism in board game form.
If you are into abstracts, Hive is a very good tile game that fits in small little pouch. Not particularly Catanish, but very well suited for beach play.I'm wondering if anybody can recommend some games in that same spirit that would be good to take to the beach. One of my favorite beach board games is Scrabble, and I picked up a nice vintage deluxe edition for my vacation later in August.
