This might be the right place to ask this but I want to buy a friend a boardgame. She likes Catan, Carcasonne and Agricola a lot. Are there any other similar games that she might like?

Puerto Rico, for sure.

Edit: Le Havre is Uwe Rosenberg's other worker placement game somewhat akin to Agricola. I'd still recommend Puerto Rico over it though.

RftG online is so good it actually has me jonezin for the tabletop game, which I haven't busted out in a few months.

Also obligatory WHAT ARE YOU PLAYING THIS WEEKEND? post:
-Vanilla Catan 4p (whoo always-popular gateways)
-Galaxy Trucker 4p (whoo chaos)
-Hey That's My Fish 4p (see above)
-RftG+GS+RvI 2pA (finally going to dig into RvI)
-Battle Line I'm sure

I finally finished a Decent quest last sunday! It only took 4 tries!

Descent games can go many ways. Get the wrong group of heroes together and a certain quest will seem impossible, while some times the right gear/treasure and team will fly through a quest.

This weekend looks pretty ace:

- Tonight I am continuing my WW2/Normandy campaign in Fields of Fire. I think I have just about everything "down" about the game except a few rules about primary fire directions and how to best use pyrotechnics.

- Tomorrow myself and a friend will be cracking his new copy of GMT's Dead of Winter and giving it a spin (well, he's already opened and punched/clipped the counters we'll need). The GBACW games are great and this one looks terrific.

- Probably will try to sneak in a game of Combat Commander: Europe at the board game day at the local game shop Sunday-usually it's not hard convincing someone to play a game where we shoot at each other instead of trying to out-grow each other's bean fields or whatever other nutty eurogame wincon is the flavor on the month.

I'm about to buy Dunwich Horror. Any thing that could make me change my mind? Will it make the game even more enjoyable?
It will make the game harder, which is a good thing.

Oh really? I thought the game was sometimes quite hard. Depends of the Great Ancient. There is this GA that spawns 5 masked enemies or whatever they're called. We couldn't get rid of one of the 5. If Dunwich makes it even harder I can't imagine how screwed we will be :lol

If she's fine with Agricola, maybe something like Power Grid or Dominion? Maybe Puerto Rico?

Thanks guys, will check out.

Yeah, it's a sliding scale.

More players=easier to seal, but harder to beat the ancient.

Most people find base AH to be a touch easy I think, at least after you start to figure out which locations spawn the most gates. But it's also possible you're making it harder on yourself through different rule interpretations, which happens a lot.

Ah yes just pulled out a two-point victory by drawing and settling my Favorite Card In Anything Ever on the last turn:

Yeah what happened, Zerosum stopped in mid turn?

I'm hoping to get some board gaming together this weekend, but everyone is busy it seems. So it might not happen. Grr.

He may have thought he took his turn but forgot to confirm his last move.

EDIT: And, Astrolad, I call the Galactic Trendsetters card "Daft Punk" when I get it out.

I really enjoyed the Battlestar Galactica boardgame. While I was somewhat... disgruntled with the show by its ending, the boardgame really managed to capture the flavour of the early show. Jumping only to have two basestars immediately follow you, Galactica getting hammered by enemy nukes, Cylon saboteurs, political conflicts, running low on supplies, making a tough decision to jump the fleet with the risk of losing some people, etc. The mechanics are very well thought out and easy to pick up.

OMG! Wanna come over to my house and we can swap E.J.O. stories and braid each other's hair? My mom says it's ok with her if it's ok with your mom! :lol

In other news, Crokinole DID happen tonight and it's a mega-super-quasar hit. Worth the insane fucking investment already.

I was particularly amused when everyone sort of ganged up on me (loyal) and voted for Gaius Baltar as President. You fools! How could you trust him? :lol

The first time we ever played my good buddy picked Gaius. He's never seen the show, so he didn't know he was "doing it wrong" -- of course we weren't CERTAIN till the end, but he was so pro-human, that it would have gone down as the single worst cylon session in BSG history. We'd reveal a skill check, they'd all be the right colors, and he'd have thrown in like 5 cards to help out. :lol

Yes I suppose I may be wrong on some rule interpretations. The fact that I have the french version doesn't help. They really wiped their ass on it. I just bought Dunwich and I had a look at the investigators. I stopped on Leo Anderson and thought "wtf he suck ass!?"

This is what's written on his card (translated, ofc)

Leadership - Any Phase: Once per game, Leo may prevent 1 point of Stamina or Sanity loss for any investigator.

And this is what wiki says;

Leadership - Any Phase: Once per turn, Leo may prevent 1 point of Stamina or Sanity loss for any investigator.

Major difference lol.

But while I browsed the wiki I noticed something weird;

http://www.arkhamhorrorwiki.com/Leo_Anderson

What are those 4 cards at the bottom of the page labelled "Personal Story"?

I don't have those cards!?

I checked a few years ago for aged copies of "Crossbows and Catapults," one of my favorite childhood games, but gave up since people wanted $100+ for a complete set.

Noticed that a new version is available titled "Battleground: Crossbows and Catapults." Picked up a new copy shipped for $28 off Ebay, and am very pleased with the quality. It's an upgraded version with additional weapons and features.

Such a great game. Can't wait to play with my kid -- just have to wait another 5 years or so.

It's stuff like this that makes me wary to try it. I've never seen the show, and I worry that will hamper my enjoyment.

That game was so much fun.
