I am really hoping I start getting better at this game, but I don't think it's happening. I sometimes get hands that I don't know what to do with, and it kills me. Or about a third of the way in, I see an opponent doing something that will make him win, and can't figure out a way to stop him, and I just have to suffer for the rest of the game...
I was looking at pics of it on BGG, and holy shit you weren't joking. That is insane.CiSTM said:Just bought War in Pacific with my friend. The freaking boarad takes almost one room :lol
For me, the key to any hand is figuring out a way I can get card-flow from it. Sometimes that means dumping some nice synergistic stuff just to get a tradable good on the table. Sometimes it means a quick explore or two to get the card-flow started. But the key is to get it started early.platypotamus said:Damn, I wasn't here to join

So awesome.Fragamemnon said:Oh sweet god. Isn't the book-keeping in that game nuts (it is on the PC, not sure about the board game version).
That being said, the maps in that game are soooo nice. And you get seven of them!

No, I suggest a separate thread for all drinking-game related stuff. Seriously speaking, there's like six people on all of GAF interested in board games of any sort outside of Scrabble and Risk, I don't mind having it all in one place and this is one of the few threads I look forward to seeing new posts in. Even if it's about one of frag's crazy wargames. Or someone asking for the same kind of recommendations that have literally been asked for like ten times before in here.aphoushole said:Yea that makes sense, I wonder what would happen if someone's robot dies?
I'm thinking that a separate thread could be created for all the online RftG gaming discussion/meet-up stuff.
Flynn said:Well, Astrolad.
One thing we COULD do is create an Official online board gaming thread. We could put together a big first post with links to all the good online board gaming sites, links to instructions, then maintain an ongoing list of NeoGAF usernames so people could friend up and whatnot.
That might be a could way of bring people over to the fold.
AstroLad said:As far as your robot dying, I guess you could take two shots if that happens. But don't forget you have two more lives. In a game with 4 or more people with some close flags, people would be getting pretty annihilated just with those rules.

If you don't mind me asking, what is funny about this?

Edit: Flynn, only other one that's free that I know of is BSW, which is here: http://www.brettspielwelt.de/Spiele/
but.... look what I just found, this might be awesome:
http://boardgamingonlinetheindex.wordpress.com/
EDIT again: Oddly, it doesn't have either our RftG or T&E, though it has other versions. Also seems to link to less than ideal implementations. Also not everything on there is free. So many it's not awesome.

Related to GenCon maybe?Fragamemnon said:OK, ConSimWorld can come back alive any day now.I swear, half the comments over the table last night were "I wanted to ask so-and-so this but ConSimWorld's been down!".

I meant perhaps GenCon happening soon caused a spike in their traffic that finally killed their server software. So what you said, basically.Fragamemnon said:I think it's just due to their old-ass software going kerplunk. Seriously, I like the format bit the whole thing looks like it's fresh out of 1997's internet.

I wouldn't necessarily classify BSG as a gateway coop title. You could move on to it pretty easily, but the theme isn't necessarily universally appealing - you'll bound to get more than one "oh, I've never seen it, I don't think I want to try it" type of comments, which isn't what you'd want for a true gateway game.Neverfade said:Should I field this one guys?![]()

I knew I needed more nerdy friends.AstroLad said:Definitely on the heavy end when it comes to euros. Also not very good with two, which might make things even more cumbersome.

Sweet spot for Power Grid is around 4 or 5.KingGondo said:I knew I needed more nerdy friends.![]()
What would you say is the ideal number of players? The more the merrier?
Sorry, but that just doesn't happen with general newbies. People can easily grasp thematic concepts like curing disease or farming. But the minute you use a sci-fi licensed property, there's a good chance you'll get a skeptical initial assessment. I've run into it several times.Neverfade said:That excuse is about on par with saying "Well I know nothing about medicine" for Pandemic or "I've never raised sheep!" for Catan.
It blew our fucking minds. It made a great game so much better.Neverfade said:Amen.

My girlfriend loves the theme of Pandemic but is a bit hesitant because of the co-op aspect and our roommate is not into the idea of co-op games at all and those are the main two I can get to play at a moments notice.AstroLad said:For gateway co-op, I'd say Pandemic. Red November is good too, but a bit more complex.
That's what I thought too but it really only takes one or two right games for your friends to be hooked as well. Catan was pretty much how I got my friends into it and that was only a few weeks ago. They love it now and are more willing to play what I throw at them. I think the big hurdle with Catan is the box art. It seems superficial but it's the truth. It looks like a really dry educational game that you would find in a school library. The good thing about it though, is once they get past the shitty art and realize how fun the game is they are more open to the other "weird" ass games you bring out.KingGondo said:I knew I needed more nerdy friends.![]()

I wouldn't have gotten the same reaction for BSG if it was a different theme but the same mechanics. And I know other people who made these comments that aren't newbies and play stuff like Agricola with no problems, so it's not a complexity issue, it's a thematic one.
That's all I'm saying.![]()
