If I could only get 3-player games consistently would you still recommend BSG?
We had a good time but I can see where it is best with more people. I used last night's game as more of a learning game for this weekend.

I do have a BSG question regarding the chain of command for titles. How does the chain of command work when you have one of heach group. For instance, last night we played with Laura Roslin, Admiral Adama, and Starbuck. Adama, through a bad draw of the crisis deck, was thrown in the Brig. At that point he loses his title and it is supposed to be passed to the next person in the chain of command, however, neither Saul nor Helo were in play so we just passed it to Starbuck who was the closest thing to a military leader we had. Is that right? Also how does one gain the Admiral title back?

Finally in regards to the president's title, when I revealed myself as the Cylon I immedietely lost my title, but again, who get's it when the chain of command for political leaders ends with me?

Heh. Was one of them Alien Toy Shop?

I had a slightly weird one yesterday where I wound up with about half my tableau being 6-devs.
Correct! Never paired that up with Earth's Lost Colony as a start world. Damn nice.

^ Not related, but I love your name, one of the funniest joke from the Simpsons in my book.
Thanks, it really is such a perfectly timed joke. It is a joke that has stuck with my brother and I so I use it with pretty much every forum I sign up for. It's usually available because it is annoyingly long but the people who get the name seem to really appreciate it.

Check page 28 of your rule book:

The orders of succession are:

Admiral
1. William Adama
2. Saul Tigh
3. Helo Agathon
4. Lee “Apollo” Adama
5. Kara “Starbuck” Thrace
6. Sharon “Boomer” Valerii
7. Galen Tyrol
8. Tom Zarek
9. Gaius Baltar
10. Laura Roslin

President
1. Laura Roslin
2. Gaius Baltar
3. Tom Zarek
4. Lee “Apollo” Adama
5. William Adama
6. Karl “Helo” Agathon
7. Galen Tyrol
8. Sharon “Boomer” Valerii
9. Saul Tigh
10. Kara “Starbuck” Thrace

Note that if the President is in the “Brig,” he keeps the President
title and all associated abilities.

Ah, thanks. I keep completely skipping over that section for some reason.

EDIT: It is good to know that we did end up playing it right.

Pretty sure there's an animated gif of him crying/storming out floating around the net. Probably too big to use as an avatar without an edit, but I'm sure someone in that Simpsons thread could edit it for you if you lack the software/ability.

Galactica, this is Pegasus actual!

Its here! I'm going to need some time alone now. :D

Also, the base game is doable with 3. I'd recommend getting it simply because its not that expensive, and should you get 5+ together, you're in for a super treat. Don't expect your world shattered at 3 players though.

UPS was there when I was still held in bed by the dead weight of my sleeping cat. Dropped it off at some of our neighbours, but I can´t fucking read the name and adress. And most are still working :/

Pretty pumped, I never had a chance to play the original or second edition.

Buuut I used the time to test paint a Terminator and it turned out really nice, if I may say so.

Anybody else getting some paint up in this bitch or do you prefer do go in
to the Hulk
raw?

@Shoogoo: Some pretty knowledgeable people basically confirmed similiar limited run boxed games with Warhammer/Heroquest being the next. Probabley a mix between the two, to keep it to one box without expansions. I trust them, but with GW you never know.

No idea how they want to do it, though. They licensed everything boardgame-y but Space Hulk to Fantasy Flight Games.

I think im going to leave everything unpainted for the foreseeable future. Ive been out of practice for years but I think I still remember how to paint blood angels. Would require me to go buy probably at least $30 worth of painting supplies, and im currently hoarding money to buy a new car.

Just waiting on my friend to de-sprue and assemble the marines and clean up the models a bit with a knife, he has a lot more patience for that than I do.

I´ve a great recipe for painting good looking red termis stolen from a GW article about something completly different, so I can´t wait to paint them. Right after I finish the last three guys from my brother´s Blood Bowl undeads.

I got my copy today and FUCKING HELL I can´t open it D:

I ordered from Mail Order Germany, than hit cancel order about twenty times a few hours later after I managed to snatch one of the fifteen copies from Maelstromgames for 25% less than the German version.

Now the idiots still sent me the German one that I don´t want! And I can´t open it! Or play it! As you might see from the use of "!" I have boardgaming blue balls!

The box alone is pure sex, looks and feels better than all other boardgame boxes I handled so far. Sturdy, thick, heavy with content, great print quality for the front art and the backside photos. It just feels like it´s worth the price.

Now I have to sent that massive mofo back and wait till my other copy arrives from England in a week of two. FML

Thats unlucky! Im in the process of removing all the blood angel iconography.. or as much as my limited skills can managed, these things are dripping in blood gems and skulls. Also going on a beach holiday tomorrow, space hulk in the hand luggage! :D

Picked up both the King in Yellow expansion for Arkham and James Ernest' Totally Renamed Spy Game. This was originally published as Before I Kill You Mr. Bond before they got a cease and desist order.

"Spy Game" is a really light card game but it is fun. You play as a Bond like super villan where you lay down cards trying to build a big evil lair in order to capture higher point valued spys. Once you captured them you can just kill them and take there points or you can monolague or as the game calls it "taunt". Taunts are cards with a value if A-I every taunt doubles the point value of the spy. You can keep playing taunts until somebody throws a taunt of the same value. The press your luck aspect of the game is probablly the best part of the game.

I mainly bought it so we have a choice when we want to play something light. Guillotine is fun but it's a game one can easily get burnt out on. We also needed another portable game for when we fly to New York next month.

The game is also really cheap (~$10) and I would recommend it if you are a fan of the Bond films as you would get a kick out of the theme and if you are looking for a light filler game.

Had a brief half-game of Middle-Earth Quest as a learning experience. Everyone else has to get up early in the morning so we didn't finish, but we got the mechanics down and it gets a tentative thumbs up out of the gate.

I played Small World and found it to be fairly enjoyable. Stumbling onto Dragon Master Amazons in my second turn was not unpleasant, in particular.

Played Endeavor at PAX with friends. Looking forward to a second play. Its really good.

This is high up on the wishlist. Pretty frustrated with myself. It released the same day as BSG:P and Chaos so I could have thrown it in the buggy and gotten some free shipping.

Looks like a pretty sweet Euro-y game.

Also have an eye on Mission: Red Planet. Has anyone played that one/have anything good to say about it?

I wish I'd played it one more time this weekend.

Played lots of Race.

Tried Pirates Cove and didn't dig it. Lots of Dominion with the new cards -- still getting used to them. Taught a friend to play Memoir of '44. Played a rusty game of Agricola and feel like I'd forgotten all the efficiencies I've learned.

Strangest moment of PAX was sitting down to watch a game of Space Hulk and having Dennis Dyack coming to join us at he table. Turns out he's a huge tabletop fan -- buys tons of FFG games and tries to get the guys at Silicon Knights to play them all the time. Had a nice chat with him.

He's certainly not alone amongst the game dev board game group.

Sorry I never even tried to hook up and play anything with you Flynn. You're probably thankful though, because if I had play board games with you, you'd have probably caught what I am now calling "The Pax Pox".

Yeah, we should have worked harder at that. Was in the same city as Astrolad and didn't get together either.

How'd you spend most of the show?

I worked a ton the early days but found time in the last day or so to really sit down and play some serious games.

My group is talking seriously about Texas for BGG next year.

No worries, the "pax pox" turned out to be the flu, so now I'm really glad I didn't board game and infect too many people :)

I spent most of the show checking out various (video) game presentations, and/or visiting with friends and former coworkers. Also, waiting in line to play Diablo 3.

Friend is coming over this weekend to start painting his Space Hulk set. Has anyone else done that yet? I'm not a huge fan of minatures (generally they are basically pretty wargames with bad rules and ahistorical setups, two things consim players loathe) and was looking for any tips or shortcuts.

I played it for a couple days. The selection is great but the interface just really turned me off.

My gaming crew plays at BSW on Friday nights. Gonna start trying to meet up.

Anybody give Race a shot at Game Genie. Are people following the suggestions when you call a game private?

I really only want to use it to play dominion. The lobby is a pain in the butt to navigate, but I like the interface for the game it self. Figuring out how to set up private games would be nice, but it being in half german makes it difficult.

Haven't tried to set one up yet.

Anyone here up for a game in a little bit?

I'm playing right now. I see he also added a tie notification for goals. I'm up to play with NeoGAF.

Oh, ok, that's cool. I wasn't sure if you were just some random dude who ignored the comment or not. Should've posted here, we could've done a 4-player.

Bought Small World on Monday and played a training game against myself last night. I am hoping this acts as a nice, lightweight wargame proxy for my wife and our friends. Something like Risk without the boredom or frustration- no need to spend four hours reaching a conclusion that's obvious within the first 45 minutes. I see that some of the regulars bought and played it months ago; as usual I'm late to the experience.

Over at BGG a frequent complaint is about Small World as a re-imagining of Vinci. That doesn't concern me at all, I never played Vinci, and at any rate from what I'm reading the game is improved in many ways. The other gripes are that it doesn't hold up to many repeated plays as the strategy and mechanic can get stale. OK, I'm not expecting a game with the replayability of Agricola. I'm not blessed with a group of boardgame enthusiast friends so I'm likewise not cursed with becoming bored with any game after playing it a dozen times within two weeks.

So... Small World. Beautiful boards and pieces, fantastic box (this is probably the best factory-standard game storage box in existence), nice rulebook, and handy rules sheet for each player. It's board gaming luxury in that the players have everything they need for all occasions at their disposal with no requirements for fiddly adjustments for various numbers of players (just use the correct board, there are four total for each combination from 2 to 5). Every little mechanic has its own specialized tokens made of heavy cardboard, from racial skills (troll lairs and hobbit holes) to special powers (encampments, dragons, and so forth) to even cut-out mountains for making combat calculations easier than they already were. The artwork is fantasy standard fare but whimsical and consistent.

The box and the website claim you can teach someone to play Small World in five minutes and I'd love to see someone try. I think it's better to say it's a self-evident game... once you key into the handful of key concepts it's safe to start a learning game- the goal, how you score, how you take territory and hold it, and the signature mechanisms, multiple races with randomized powers and the process of putting races In Decline. From there the game should be intuitive enough that most neophytes will pick up the nuts and bolts of the rules within a few turns as long as one player knows what they're doing. Even so the rule book is a dozen pages long with an addendum, there are thirty-four racial and special powers to contend with that usually but not always can be learned on the fly, and there are fussy little details that might bog down a group if a few people are strict on precise rules interpretations. Any game that has a five-page-long rule errata FAQ on BGG can't claim to be the most streamlined, but in the case of Small World almost all of these issues are small quibbles on the application of very specific race and power combos that won't interfere with a casual group.

I like it, or at least I want to like it and I'll see how things fare if I get a chance to put it on the table with a few friends this weekend.

hoi BGGaf, what's your thoughts on Tannhauser from FFG?

tannhauser-board.jpg

Content looks nice from that picture.

Tannhauser is an ok game, I was not to crazy on it. The movement/aiming system they use is pretty neat but it seems like the game often plays out the same way. They try to keep things interesting with new characters you can buy plus new downloadable items/tokens to spice things up.

I would wait on it though as FFG recently acquired the property from the original rights owner apparently and is gonna release a new edition it seems like.
