Although Nucky did give Eli another 'How's that?' in the finale.

That's two How's Thats dangling over Eli's head from Nucky! Nucky playing the long game I fear. Eli will bite it in a season or two.

Did anyone else think that Gyp Rosetti had experienced a mental breakdown when he first started talking in that weird voice on the beach?

Just saw the final scene on the boardwalk again. Awesome. Meant more to me when seeing it isolated from the rest of the episode (and not still digesting the events). Nucky going underground.

It's possible, though it'd certainly be better to see some year-to-year growth. The S3 premiere was about on par with the S2 premiere in terms of numbers. Would be interesting to see the numbers crunched across all platforms for the various seasons, but I'm not sure that data is available.

I very much enjoyed watching all of the episodes of BE. Hope we get many more seasons.

How does BE compare to other HBO shows in terms of ratings? Is it the 2nd rated show after Game of Thrones?

Could someone refresh my memory, what the heck happened to Van Alden?

Last I remember he was being escorted out of that bar by those goons for selling the alcohol.

My memory is terrible. :(

I for one welcome the transition into full on gangster mode. We get awesome, gory scenes and badass, eccentric mobsters and killers without losing all the technical and writing excellence of the first two seasons. Not to say that we didn't in the first two seasons, but I don't think we've lost anything making it a more straightforward Nucky vs. X story.

You're not alone.

I was confused when Gyp got knifed. I didn't know that the attacker was the guy whose friend was killed on the beach that one night.

It was his cousin.

And I knew from that moment he would kill Gyp.

I'm a bit surprised that people think Season 3 was weak. I really enjoyed it. And if people are making arguments about the multitude of characters working better in GOT seasons 2, they are totally wrong. Season 1 of Game Of Thrones was excellent. Season 2 had way too many threads and not enough breathing time and suffered for it.

Well, I've never been a big fan of this show (understatement of the year), but even I can't see any way in which GOT is a better show.

I liked a few episodes of Boardwalk S3, while GOT S2 was basically a complete failure.

Complete? No. The last two episodes were excellent.

Blackwater was decent, the rest of the season totally sucked. That's enough to label it a complete failure in my opinion.

GOT insults my intelligence when it tries almost every episode to shove its sex and violence down my throat. I much prefer and appreciate Boardwalk's more nuanced and subtle approach. There is violence and sex, but it flows with the story, it's not there as a crutch for the writers. On top of all that, I've read the novels so that takes a lot of the suspense out of the show for me. Boardwalk just keeps getting better, while I'm not sure I'll even take the time to watch GOT next year.

They did but it was alongside plot and character development and substance. The reason it isnt fair to excuse the gratuitous sex and violence in the show just because it was also in the books is because the books are not limited in the content they can present to the audience. Grrm can write as much as he wants, so when he has a lot of sex and violence taking up time, its acceptable. The show however is limited to an hour of content per week. It shouldnt waste time on 30 second sex scenes and unnecessary shots of red shirts being brutally murdered. Once in a while is fine, but it seems like it happens multiple times every single episode. Its like dangling a shiny object in front of a cat and going "oooohhhh look how cool this is!" Frankly its tiresome and boring.

lol perfect.

S2 of GOT had its flaws, and definitely stretched itself thin across many characters and locations, but I still believe it was excellent TV though.

I do prefer the way that season 3 of Boardwalk did with its many characters and locations compared to S2 of GOT though. Even though it was frustrating not seeing Capone, Van Alden, and Chalky for several episodes I think it's better to get episodes that dedicate significant time to those arcs instead of sometimes getting one scene an episode from a GOT ep.

IGN's season 3 review (8.1)

I'm only a couple episodes into season 2, but I gotta say this is quickly becoming one of my favorite shows.

My biggest criteria for tv shows or movies is characters I enjoy watching, and this show has that in spades. In fact there isn't a character I don't get excited for when they cut to them.

Absolutely loved this season, in a lot of ways better than last season. I loved Richard in this season mainly because he finally got more time to expand and have his own little story, the last few episodes with him were fucking intense as shit oh my god.

So Nuck lost his family? :(.

Didn't care much for Gyp, but god damn if there was a spinoff of this show in New York i'd watch it.

I hope Margaret bites the dust. She is REALLY tiresome now as a character. I must say that I was NOT happy when I saw Owen dead. I really wanted to see some epic bath scene where he takes out that New York gangster. Also, Harrow is the man. If he dies, I'll die a little on the inside. Of all the characters on the show, I am rooting for him the most.

Yes, i will tune in. I would like to believe that this season was the worst that the show is gonna get. Especially in TV, you're 'entitled' with 1 weak season pass. I just hope they regroup themselves. Plus, new writers joining may help.

S4 is a 'test' season for me. If i won't feel there's improvement i'll probably stop early on.

It just isn't well-written. My most liked characters in game of Thrones are the females. That's another show with a huge cast that struggles with dividing air-time but relatively to BE they do a much better job at it.

More often that not it's interchangeable. My mind about this season hasn't changed after it came to an end. As a whole it was still a misguided and ill-conceived endeavor for me.

If you have read the books, then the bolded amazes me if you actually believe it.

EditL Woops, sorry for double post. I just finished watching Season 3 30 minutes ago.

Haven't read a word of this thread all season. About to watch the season finale now. This has been one hell of a season. Can't wait to see how it all goes down. I'll be back with impressions later! SO EXCITED!

Oh my God. It's really amazing to see how the entire show was transformed by the events at the end of the second season. It's rare to see a show so confident in its own ability to dictate the actual tone and pace of the series without holding on to what's safe or what people expected when the show started. The natural progression of violence being introduced as a solution is that eventually if it becomes the norm, nothing is safe as long as there are enemies in the trade. By becoming a gangster, Nucky let Atlantic City become a gangland, and this was the ultimate price.

The rivalry between Nucky and Gyp totally made this season. No holds barred, a mad dog versus a master schemer, tons of great moments between the two of them all over. Gyp's insanity never got old, and Bobby Carnival was SO GOOD at it. I hated the guy but I loved the performance. The escalating violence making Nucky start to think about what's really important to him is something which was due, but I couldn't really feel sorry for him, or really any of the other people around him. They all knew what they were getting into, and their greed or loyalty landed them in the same spot as the devil himself.

Billie Kent was probably the weakest link in the season, because we was a new character, a stupid actress, and just another pretty face Nucky wanted to fuck. I didn't feel anything for her, and I didn't feel anything for Nucky when she died. It was just one long drawn out plot device to drive Margaret away from him again, and that does she or doesn't she thing since season 1 has been getting old. I hope for her sake she has really made her decision at the end there.

The strongest subplot for me would be the Harold and Tommy storyline. I really felt bad for the kid. He's probably the only innocent one in the entire show left, and Harold is the most honorable and just person in this unjust and wretched setting. Lol. That finale with him just killing the fuck out of everyone to get Tommy away from this crap was really uplifting in a really disturbing way. Not that I would advocate what he did, but everyone in there was an asshole anyway.

I'm sad that he did put a bullet between Gillian's legs though. I fucking HATE that bitch-whore. I wonder if she actually survived. Unfortunately it looks like she did. I hope she's in an asylum in the next season. Ugh. What a terrible woman. Makes me sick just thinking about all the crap she did in the show so far, and all the people she's been trying to manipulate to create her perfect delusional world.

I hope Harold finds peace with Julia in the future. I really like his character, and I was really happy that he finally found someone who could treat him like a normal person. It'll be interesting to see where the series goes in the next season especially, considering how messy the climax was this time. So much uncertainty for everything looking ahead. Quite a huge contrast from the finality of the previous season, in terms of how everything tied up more or less. There wasn't a cliffhanger here like the first season either. I kinda dig the decision to leave it open. Much more exciting.

I'm hoping he does as well, especially after we got that wonderful final scene where he brings Tommy to Julia.

But we all know he's pretty broken, and Harrow may not be able to bring himself back to a normal life no matter how much he wants to. We'll see.

I don't think he can bring himself back to a "normal" life, but I think he can surround himself with a small circle of people who understand him and can help normalize his day to day interactions. We've already seen that despite all his personal issues, the way he deals with Tommy shows that he still has a decent human spirit in him. That's the most important part imo.

So his name is Harrow? I don't really read much stuff about the show in fear of spoilers, and I always thought it was pronounced Harold. Lol. :(

Yeah it's Richard Harrow.

There's a lot to be said about Richard surrounding himself with typical day-to-day situations. Obviously he had Tommy, but he also had the veterans hall and Julia. He also looked fairly comfortable on the boardwalk.

I'm guessing Gillian will be a problem for him (and Nucky?) next season. That's probably going to slow down his return to normalcy, so to speak.

I realized that I didn't even mention Owen. That goes to show how much of an impact he really had on the series. I liked the character and the actor, but it was clear from the start that he was small time and he would never really replace Jimmy or have a part in the "larger" scope of things. I never believed that Margaret would ever really run away with him, and I always thought he would just die some day doing the shit he was paid to do. And... he did. Nothing much to dwell upon.
