Bomb Kills 13, Hurts 24 in Baghdad; IS Claims Responsibility

A car bomb exploded outside a popular ice cream shop in central Baghdad just after midnight Tuesday, killing 13 people and wounding 24, hospital and police officials said.

The Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility for the attack, which Iraqi officials said involved apparently remotely detonated explosives inside a parked car. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

The attack came just days into the holy month of Ramadan when Muslims fast during daylight hours. After sundown, families break their fast and Baghdad's restaurants and cafes quickly fill up.

Videos posted to social media showed chaotic scenes on the streets surrounding the blast. A number of wounded lay on the ground, others propped themselves up on the colorful park benches outside the ice cream shop. One young girl, wearing a ribbon and bow in her hair, wandered the scene dazed.

Ramadan is often marked by an uptick in violence in Iraq.

From last Friday, The Independent:
The terrorist group uses the start of the 30-day period of fasting and prayer to renew calls for atrocities every year, with previous statements linked to attacks in Orlando and France.

A statement released on YouTube said supporters who were unable to make the journey to Isis territories in Iraq and Syria should attack “infidels…in their homes, their markets, their roads and their forums…double your efforts and intensify your operations”.

The message, called “Where are the lions of war?” continued: “Do not despise the work. Your targeting of the so-called innocents and civilians is beloved by us and the most effective, so go forth and may you get a great reward or martyrdom in Ramadan.”

It listed targets including the “scholars of evil and sedition” and politicians, following lengthy articles in propaganda magazines providing instructions on lorry, car and stabbing attacks.

The segment was featured in a longer article by spokesman Abul-Hasan al-Mujahir, which was published in a Ramadan issue of Isis' Rumiyah magazine on Friday, telling readers to use the month to "maximise the benefit you receive on the day of judgement".

Daesh gonna claim any terrorist attack even if it shows them killing Muslims, to prove they just love killing?

For them, shi'a/sufis are not muslims. They mostly target shi'a/sufi event/neighbourhoods.
In any case, any muslims who don't make allegiance to Al Baghdadi is an apostate. So it's just him and his fanclub.

Yeah. It's kind of insane that the majority of muslims are basically killable targets to Daesh, it's way beyond religious reasons.

This is disgusting. The bigots seem to be awfully quiet when it comes to mentioning this attack though (and the myriad of others).

And yet when you point out that it's non-Islamic, people just stupidly respond by saying you're just using the "No true Scottsman" fallacy. No you cretin, it's just someone who understands their religion properly and doesn't use it to justify his whims and desires.

Same reason why you see almost every terrorist attack occuring in Europe by degenerates who don't even practice their faith.

There's a very good article explaining the logic from one of France's top terrorism experts. View the top comment here (as the article is behind a payload).

I don't think so.

See above. I always find it funny when people who ignorant about Islam or think they know about the religion tell Muslim "No, LISTEN, it IS about YOUR religion, trust me."

Like scholar who are way more educated than you and I spend years studying this stuff. Except, you don't even need to be scholared to understand the teachings of our Prophet SAW and what Allah reveals to us regarding these topics. Literally in the last 1400 years of Islam, there's been unanimous agreement from top academic Islamic scholars on this stuff. We don't need people to pretend it's "religious"; whether extremists like ISIS or people who have no clue about Islam.

Yeah. It's kind of insane that the majority of muslims are basically killable targets to Daesh, it's way beyond religious reasons.

It has everything to do with religion since they intentionally targeted Shia muslims, they even said it themselves ("gathering of Shi'a"). Karradah is mostly populated by Iraqi Shia and the same area that claimed over 400 civilians in last year's bombing (the worst ISIS bombing that year) which the world more or less didn't give a fuck about. There's a reason Shia in Baghdad go and shop in areas like Adhamiyah, take a guess why.

Once again radical Sunni Islam and Sunni supremacism are being demonstrated at their finest like in the million of their other bombings; the Shia genocide similar to their Christian, Yezidi and <insert any minority in Middle East here) genocide continues. What's sad is that for a significant amount of Sunnis in the region (and even abroad) this was just a bunch of rafidhi/safavid/persian/majoosi/<insert any racist and derogatory term for Shia Arabs and Shia Muslims in general here> kuffar getting blown up as usual.

and to add to this thread: there was another bombing in the morning in central Baghdad today near Martyr's bridge. Initial death toll at 5 with 17 wounded. This is just the beginning of Ramadan.

Aftermath from the first bombing this thread was about (no body parts or such shown, some blood at most)

Gotta love how the wonderful NY Times didn't even mention once who were targeted or why they were targeted in this bombing or even in the worst bombing from last year. Gotta keep that hidden in the sectarian pro-Sunni West.

Daesh gonna claim any terrorist attack even if it shows them killing Muslims, to prove they just love killing?

They are a primarily Sunni extremist group and their targets are usually Shiite muslim areas. This causes the Shiite militias to enact revenge on the Sunni population and so the cycle of violence continues.

Details of the second major attack via The Guardian: "At least 17 killed as families break fast at ice-cream shop in centre of Iraqi capital, and 14 die in office bombing in south of city"
An Islamic State car bomb that targeted families eating ice-cream after breaking their Ramadan fast has killed at least 17 people and wounded 32 more in southern Baghdad.

The blast outside a popular shop in the Karrada district of the Iraqi capital was followed by another attack, outside an office where people collect their government pensions, which killed 14 and wounded at least 37, according to police.

Isis quickly claimed responsibility for the first attack on early Tuesday morning, which Iraqi officials said appeared to involve remotely detonated explosives inside a parked car.

The militant group later also claimed responsibility for the second attack, saying its suicide bombers had targeted gatherings of Shia Muslims.

The death toll of 31 from the two attacks was the highest over a 24-hour period in Baghdad for several months.

The attacks will exacerbate fears that Isis will use Ramadan to intensify its campaign against civilians as it continues to lose ground in Mosul.
Isis members believe blessings for “good deeds” are amplified during the holy month. Over the past 13 years, Isis and its earlier incarnations have regularly targeted civilians, Shia shrines and Christian churches. While the group’s reach inside Baghdad has been weakened by a decade-long counter-terrorism campaign, it retains the ability to slip explosives past a dragnet of checkpoints and cause devastation to civilian populations.

As an-ex shi'a, i can tell you that the dehumanization is the same on the other side. Thousands of Syrians killed ? "Just a bench of wahhabi/takfiri/mossad agents".

And a lot of shi'a militia are as sectarian as ISIS. They says "wahhabi" but they really mean "sunni".

How does murdering Muslims during Ramadan somehow get twisted into being a justified act of god?

How does that get translated into fighting for Islam and defending Islam?

I don't understand these ISIS freaks. They are completely anti-Islamic. They've killed more Muslims than any other religious group in their terrorist acts of arnage.

Why even call yourselves an "Islamic State"?

RIP victims. I don't understand how people can be so barbaric. Blowing up a bomb near an ice cream shop is pretty much implying they're expecting to hurt/kill children. How freaking terrible can people be....

I really hope ISIS will be dealt with soon and these attacks happen less, but I'm not counting on it sadly. Iraq has a long way ahead to recovery from all the shit of the past decades.
