Frasier predates all the shit he's been up to lately. Like trying to launch a conservative network.

It's entirely possible that it's totally agenda-agnostic. But I have to say, at first glance, someone like him portraying some of the worst stereotypes of his ideological opposition makes my eyebrows raise at the very least.
That's true and scrutiny is understandable for vocally political celebs. Just like with the American Carol thing, more than he is involved in the interpretation of the role. I'm not sure that he's even producing this which is odd* I just think that Grammer is a conservative in the same mold that Willis & Scharzenegger are conservatives- They want to make lots of money doing what people want to see and pay less in taxes for it.

I also don't think that a political view view should dictate my enjoyment of a performance & Grammer has been pretty character neutral throughout his career. As an aside, I think 9/11 may have had a pretty big impact on him. If I'm not mistaken one of the Frasier producers died on a flight.

*FAKE EDIT-Imdb indicates he's not and an interesting tidbit is Mario VanPeebles is directing.

Wow, that OP made me want to watch the show. I'm surprised I haven't heard of it as I used to be a big fan of Grammer. Will check this out as soon as I can.

I found myself quite attracted to his daughter. Then I found out she was his daughter and can see his big square head in her face too. Fantasy ruined, ugh.

I wonder when/if the show will be exported. I'm kind of interested but obviously have to see it before making my mind up.

What? You know the actress isn't actually Kelsey Grammer's daughter, right?

Looking to create awareness amidst the myriad content choices available to consumers and ultimately foster tune-in for the series, Starz has marshaled more resources than ever to support Boss, including making the pilot available to some 76 million homes via on-demand platforms proffered by cable, satellite and telco video providers, beginning Oct, 14.

Link to the article.

You can also watch the first episode on the official Starz website:

I'm not sure if it's censored, so I'm going to wait for it to officially premiere.

so yeah after seeing a few eps and looking back on them, this show is fucking great.. it does start off kind of slow, so give it at least 3 episodes before writing it off completely... just know that it sets up a lot of shit and then the payoff at the end of the season is fuckawesome. They picked it up for the 2nd season right after watching the 7th episode (out of 8) because it blew them away from what I'm told.

a lot of it is like city politics minutiae that you should definitely be paying attention to and understand in order to get the most out of it.

Yikes, I hope I haven't made a booboo but I was talking about the pretty (shudder) girl from Greek.

Sounds just like Spartacus in terms of set up and pay off. Fucking hyped to the max.

I just watched this. Review:

- the blonde is a fox. Need more nudity.
- good direction from Van Sant.
- better writing than pretty much all network tv shows
- his daughter is a fox. Need more nudity.
- his wife is a fox. Need more nudity

Ultimately, two parts of it ruined then entire fucking thing. They are as follows:

1. Cutting off people's ears? And then the guy it happened to giving them back to him in a box? And then him putting it down the sink and getting the sink clogged up? What is this fucking bullshit?

2. Injecting his doctor in the car, just to warn her to not say anything? What is this fucking bullshit?

I mean come on. You wait years and years for a good political show to come out post Studio-60 and then you think you found one until they fill it with the most stupid shit anyone has ever heard of. Can you imagine if The West Wing had a scene where the Republicans were caught up in a plot to start
injecting doctors
?

The Golden Age of TV (Buffy, The Wire, West Wing, Sopranos, Six Feet Under) died during, what, 2003-2007? What have we even had in the past 3 or so years, other than Treme? I mean come on.

Studio 60, Party Down, and a bunch of British shows (Sherlock comes to mind).

Anyone else watch this?

I thought it was pretty good. Grammer was really great, and I liked his chilly wife as well. Although Kane's blow up at the Latino guy, grabbing his ear and dragging him across the room, I felt was a little too over the top. Also, when he opened the box at the end, you knew it was going to contain that guy's ears. That also felt out of place.

The daughter is a minister/nurse/drug addict? And she has a strained relationship with her father? I'm interested to see where they'll take her storyline, but it's pretty cliche.

Also, Kane's secretary/assistant...psh. Please. She looks like a porn star that's playing dress up as a secretary. I don't buy her for one minute. She is hot, and I thought that the sex scene was really good, but CLEARLY that's the only reason she's on this show. To look hot, and to provide the amount of nudity needed for a Starz series.

I liked the direction. Definitely stylized, but I thought that it did a good job setting the tone for the rest of the series.

Yep, me too. Injecting the doctor was a total WTF moment. As was the stuff with the ears.

Edit 2:

‘Boss’ Co-Showrunners Exit Starz Series

I wonder what this means for season 2?

I was talking about 1 hour dramas. Party Down and most of the British shows (The Thick of It etc) don't really count, and there's been stuff like Californication, Entourage, Louie etc keeping things going for half hour dramedys.

Also, Kane's secretary/assistant...psh. Please. She looks like a porn star that's playing dress up as a secretary.

Agree with this, and she does look EXACTLY like that, yes, but you do get a few of those types working as PA's/junior associates in the City.

If they lose all the totally unnecessary violence (I get that the dude wrote Apocalypto, which is about as violent as they get, but come on!), this could be a winner. Van Sant has set a great directors vision for the show, cast is great, and writing above average. If some really meaty plots build up, it could be a winner. The stuff about him having to keep his disease secret, and then struggling to act in his role whilst suffering from the tremors/memory loss etc has already been done almost identically in the West Wing, though.

Knowing NOTHING about the history of Chicago's 'corrupt' leadership (I've read Dreams From My Father though, which didn't really include any corruption I can remember), it's good to know there may be some basis to it. The West Wing has loads of storylines pretty much ripped from the daily headlines of Clinton's presidency though, and Treme does the same with headlines in New Orleans post-Katrina, so the same could work really well with this. Just, please don't turn it into Goodfellas.

Can someone explain the ears? I must have missed something. I know he was grabbing a guy by the ears at point but other than that I'm clueless.

Otherwise it was a decent first episode. That secretary is hot (obligatory).

The guy that went on the TV news and told everyone about the buried Native American artifacts or whatever got his ears cut off because...I think, because he didn't listen to his superior (who was the guy that had his ear pulled by Kane). He wasn't supposed to tell anyone about the NA stuff buried in the graveyard, but because he did, it set back plans that had been in motion for years and millions of dollars were pretty much lost.

The Mexican dude fucked up the development project by talking to the media. His boss had to answer to Kane who was pulling his ear and just humiliating him because his guys fucked up so he told Kane he'd take care of it and went to his subordinate, made him cut off his ears as an extension of what Kane did to his boss. Right when he showed up to Kane's party I knew what was in the box and why he did it.. he told Kane something about convincing him that they are listening which should have clued you in.

I fucking love this show, if only just because Kelsey Grammer played the character so well. It's also interesting to see a show looking at the inner workings of a city council that has more people than 27 states.

It's great to Starz stepping up its game.

I agree. Starz is really stepping up. Did you watch the trailer for Magic City? I think it looks pretty good too, although it's a +1 soapy 60s era TV show, ala The Playboy Club and Pan Am. I think it will be the best of those three though, as the subject content is better suited to a premium network like Starz.

I didn't know Olga Kurylenko was in it. Now I'll watch it for sure.

Yeah, I loved it. It's a much better fit for Starz.

They've had some serious creative stinkers - Crash, Camelot (poor Joseph Finnes), and Gravity. Even their better dramas, like Spartacus, can't really be compared dramas on other networks. Boss is their first that really gives me hope.

It's exciting to see another network getting serious about their original programming.

(Da Vinci's Demons sounds good too, although it'll probably be more similar to The Tudors than Boss or Boardwalk Empire or something like that.)

Just saw the first episode and really liked it. Some parts were a bit over the top but for a first attempt they did really well. Grammer is superb and the writing is quite good.

It was a good episode, although there were several scenes that bothered me:

The senator guy beating the black guy in the video. He was beating the guy, kicking and punching him repeatedly. So then he has a press conference and tells everyone that he was just trying to help the guy? When there is a video proving the contrary? Uhhh...

And then he goes out into the HALLWAY, and fucks the secretary right in the open? FFS, his wife and kids were RIGHT THERE. All they had to do was look up and a little to the right and they would have seen him. Not to mention the fact that there were tons of other people in the building that easily could have seen them as well. It's not like they're two horny teens risking nothing by fucking in public. He's running for senator (or whatever) and she's seems to be sort of a rising star in the political world. They're stupidly risking everything; their lives and careers, because neither of them can wait 5 seconds to find a closet to fuck in? (even a closet would be a really bad idea, but you know what I mean)

In last week's episode they did it in an empty stairway, (in a building full of people) which was also really risky and stupid. I fully expect them to have sex in front of everyone during a press conference in next week's episode.

The storybook reading scene. Kane and his wife were being filmed (I think), but even if they weren't, it really wasn't the best place to have a conversation like that.

And then, towards the end of the episode, Kane is sitting with a naked woman in front of several huge, open windows. He has lots of enemies and they could have a camera parked in a building just opposite of his, waiting for some compromising situation to present itself.

Everyone just seems to be acting so carelessly on this show.

Aside from all of that, I still really enjoyed the episode. I liked that they explained the situation with the daughter. She's a volatile drug addict, and she could be a liability to her politician parents, so they abandoned her. Very cold on their part, but it makes sense.

I'm almost the opposite. I like how the show is presented and how the characters all react to the mayor.

However, Kelsey's performance just screams going against type. This was more apparent in the first episode though, sommaybe it gets better. At the same time he still seems like Dark Frasier to me. It's weird.

Also not buying the sex in public for a recently announced candidate for governor with the wife waiting in the car. That part of it I wish they would just leave alone. Neither of them seem to fit the profile.

I'm pretty sure the show has become a regular for me.

EDIT: My thoughts were largely beaten by RatskyWatsky

Same boat here. I have been a big fan of his since Frasier, but I'm not sure if I'm liking this show or not. I don't know if I'm just being too critical, but a lot of it felt a little bit forced. It's like they are trying really hard to be an edgy show. I will keep watching and develop a stronger opinion, but I didn't come away from the first episode clamoring for another.

Did he really just fuck that secretary in the hallway? The fuck? The part about "is this what you want?" was good though.

"Quicker than I thought" - lol

His assistant also looks like a hooker.

New episode tonight!

Everyone should make a guess as to where the Treasurer and Secretary will sex next! I think this time they'll do it in a car filled with other people, including his wife and kids. While his wife is trying to settle down the kids, and the other people have their heads turned in conversation, he'll turn to the secretary and fuck her. Quickly of course.

SpeedingUptoStop

will totally Facebook friend you! *giggle* *LOL*
Listen, if you wouldn't go balls deep on this woman in front of your children on a kindergarten playground, it's not bad writing, it's something wrong with you, ya feel me.
