My whole friday morning is gone. I was scheduling some MP play time today, but now have to spend it watching the download snailing towards 100%. Waifu works on friday, weekend is packed. Friday was rustynails time :`(

Developers have really, really gone overboard with downloadable game size. I thought 12 GB for Witcher 2 was pushing it. But 25 GB is way too goddamn much. Aren't there snazzy compression models for them to use? If not, why don't they spend time on coming up with them, instead of plopping the game wholesale on the download cart.

It wasn't all bad though. Got some office work done, which I was putting off for Monday...But anyways I'm mad and you should be too.

People will complain if the game is 4GB with compressed textures and audio, People will complain if the game is 25GB with uncompressed textures and audio.

It's hard to find a middle ground where all gamers are happy.

I wouldn't download a 25gb game unless it was perfect. Will avoid this, was going to look for it in the Steam sales as well :(

Do I have space? Yes, but its like having money to buy a game - I only have it cause am careful.

Game size could be difficult for PC gaming (and all gaming) going forward if this is what its like now :/

It would be cool to have a choice. Some games have optional HQ textures as a separate download.

But yeah, I look forward to playing MP3 but I definitely dread the download. My internet sucks and my poor 1TB is already packed to the brim as it is.

I read the DF comparison and it is indeed higher rez textures and audio but the difference with the consoles isn't as huge as games like BF3 and TW2. still, it's supposed to look better.

First, it's your fault for not informing yourself about it. I mean look at the title: you bought it before you checked its size!

Second, it uses uncompressed assets - embrace it. It's the way it's meant to be played.

Not true. Anything between 5-12 GB is acceptable and most games are around that size anyway.

The problem is not the actual size of a game, but whether you can actually get a good enough speed to download it in a few hours or whether you can afford to download it (a lot of people have bandwidth caps).

25 - 4 = 21 GB of middle ground.

You were saying?

What? You have free HDD space because you're careful? I don't understand.

HDD sizes have grown much faster than game sizes, I'm sure. And this game is just an odd one out.

This is the future of game downloads. Max Payne just got there first. Think about it, when the next Xbox and PS4 both use Blu-Ray for game storage there will an excessive amount of room for content. Half the reason PC game downloads are so low now is simply because on console they try real hard to fit it on a 9GB disk. Once the new generation of consoles hit and developers have 25+ GB of storage to play with you can be sure that similar sized game will be heading to PC.

So what you're saying is that you would prefer a compromised product?

The reason the game is so large is simply because they took the extra step by using much higher quality assets across the board in comparison to the much smaller console version. In particular, some of the cutscenes in the game are rendered as video and they actually went ahead and delivered full 1080p videos instead of the typical shitty quality 720p videos with poor compression.

I'm thrilled with their efforts as they actually tried to give PC gamers the best possible experience.

This game is fucking cool. Best gameplay for a western developed third person shooter for sure.

But god-damn something has to be done about skipping cutscenes. Replaying that shit every time you die can get annoying. And the ratio between cutscenes:gameplay is staggeringly high. Also it's more Tony Scott than Michael Mann sadly (ugly headache inducing color-filter changes, random words popping up as subtitle)

Took a little over an hour to download.

And once you play it, you'll forget about your download, when you see how great it looks compared to the consoles.
Absolutely. I can't believe Rockstar finally came up with a great PC version.

I booted up the PS3 version just to see how it compares and I had a good laugh ! ;p

Get used to it. File sizes will only get bigger with the new gen approaching. And with internet providers bullshitting us on dl speed and service costs, long dl times will make a return. You are going to be dling really big files soon because DX11 raised the max texture size from 4k to 16k and added 3 new shaders. My guess is that the 25gig size for mp will be nothing when 4k textures become the norm and 8k is thought of as good texturing.

Rage's download size is only a few gig less, IIRC.

I dont get the problem unless you have to download to an SSD.

So it takes a day or so to get it. Then you get a better quality experience with no compression. The world is not ending tomorrow. Play it then.

If the "gimme gimme naow naow" ADD people whine enough to cause a decrease in asset quality, I'll be pissed.

Most people have monthly internet quotas they need to keep an eye on.

Great port, stunningly beautiful game! I was well aware of the large install size, so I bought the retail version... which isn't Steamworks and doesn't even unlock in Steam. If you want to complain about something, complain about that, but only if you must. Honestly, at best it's a minor inconvenience.
