Bravely Default: Demo coming to NA January 2

Downloaded, played for a couple of hours, don't know what the fuck I'm doing, had a great time! The only problem is my Black Mage has no "magic" attacks. Also can't help but laugh at the "run away" animation.

You have to buy spell scrolls in town, but on the bright side they're shared between all party members.

For "melee resistant enemies" I change his sword by a Staff and a Shield (YES, you can change your weapons IN COMBAT) and destroy everybody's ass with black magic.

:O

Holy shit, I never noticed that! That means you could also switch between carrying a big shield when you´re in the defense to a two-handed sword when you´re going in for an all-out attack. That´s crazy!

Does the full game ease you in better to the combat etc ? Demo just seems to throw things at you.

Yes, the (optional) quests at the beginning are super basic "how to" tutorials. I agree, the demo just throws you kinda in there... would have made much more sense to have that tutorial stuff in there as well.

Thanks :) I kinda expected that but just wanted to confirm, happened a few times with RPG demos.

It's sort of odd how most of the world map encounters are your standard easy enemies who hit in the 20s and then now and then you come across a floating cat who one-shots one of your characters with a 3000 damage Aerora.

I see that you have encountered night time.

That's the thing! It's not a night monster, it's... the White Cait I think they're called? It's a normal encounter, I think they even drop the liver you're supposed to harvest for the first quest.

Ah, right, I must've forgotten. They should at least be quite simple to kill, right? I think other monsters drop the livers as well, at least.

Yeah, they go down quickly. It just surprised me the first time they showed up and instantly took out my Valkyrie. xD

So, BD was just a blip on my radar before with my experience from 4 Warriors of Light... Something I'd pick up eventually after it dropped in price.

It's now my most anticipated game of 2014. Thanks, demo!

...and actually, in the very beginning you can´t even use Brave or Default at all. The first battles are very basic. It´s actually paced very well. You´ll get introduced to Brave and Default very soon, though, so there´s no tutorial slog - the tutorial quests are all optional and very unobtrusive (consisting of stuff like "rearrange your party" or "use four brave attacks in a row", all stuff you can do whenever and whereever you please).

Games like the first Etrian Odyssey (let alone The Dark Spire!) were oldschool not only gameplay-wise but also in how obtuse they were, dropping you in the cold water without any big explanation. BD on the other hand really has all the modern ease of use elements you would expect.

Well, after getting to put more time into it after work, I think I'm starting to get it and like it. Did the first side quest to get more money for better equipment for my party, and grinding up to level 6 now. Much better than getting slaughtered by everything like I was earlier.

Yeah I've been putting a lot more time into it and it seems pretty damn great so far :)

I like the way you set/change jobs for your character (basically a set class) and as well as that you can have another ability which is essentially another job class to choose from. Many many choices to mess around with which I really like. I don't see why you'd pick separate White or Black Magic over the B/W combo one though.

A quick question though to anyone, how do I get more workers ?

Has anyone else been getting absolutely slaughtered or is it just me?

I started the demo on 'Normal', but these monsters are brutalizing my team.
The one lady in town recommended going to the cave to the west for some easy monsters to train on. I go over there, whole party gets blinded by a trap, then the lizard monsters start munching on my party. Barely made it back to town without wiping after two encounters.

Is....is this normal?

Fight a few battles on the world map. As soon as you see the White Cat enemy, do everything in your power to wipe it out first. Then go to the cave to the west. Having the Freelancer ability "Dungeon Master" will protect you from traps and other hazards in dungeons. Remember, that if you want to flee from a dungeon, you can also lower the random encounter rate to -100%, meaning you avoid battles.

Think this is hands down one of the most satisfying demos I have ever playing, been playing for the past couple of hours and I am having a blast with this. Can't wait for the actual game to drop in a month.

This is wonderful.

Defeated the first boss and currently at level 8. I was going to buy this day one anyway but the demo has made this a must purchase. The 3D is awesome in the city with huge depth. The brave/default mechanism is starting to sink in and make some sense and leads to really interesting choices.

I need to stop casting sleep on enemies that are at -2 BP as they can't attack for two turns anyway.

Looking forward to finishing the demo and getting the full game.

I printed the AR cards and I can't get them to work which is a shame.

will the demo version be able to streetpass with the real game?

I have an XL with two extra 3DS lying around. I know you get free villages but more the merrier.

The demo was pretty unforgiving (my first battle was with a white cat, insta-death!) at first, but I slowly figured things out. Definitely not much in the way of hand-holding, which was a little tricky to start with as I haven't played a JRPG in about 10 years.

I really like it so far though. I've got about an hour into it, and the brave/default system seems pretty powerful, even if I barely understand it. The battles are fairly quick, and knowing I can control how often battles occur in the settings is definitely a +1 (it's really annoying when you're just trying to get somewhere and keep having to fight pointless battles).

The music is solid, and it looks great for a handheld game (just got my 3DS, so still somewhat surprised how good these games look compared to a DS).

For the Brave/Default? Why not just do Brave 2-3 times to start every battle and win immediately? Not sure I understand the impact there.

So to get better weapons and open up new places, you have to do all those time things? Well, that sucks since I live in a small town and it'll be hard to get more than one person.

No impact if you win in that turn. But if not, then you can't take action until 2-3 turns and are open to enemy attacks.

You can get a 2nd villager from the guy standing left of the inn. You have to complete the demo to a certain point first though.

Okay. Got all but one of the unlocks. Seriously...fuck that last unlock; I had an inkling it would be
complete the stupid town
, but holy hell.

Lots of great strategies I never even thought of when I was reading around the net on the game.

If you're facing a primarily physical attack boss, Ninjas and Knights wreck the shit out of them with the right abilities.

You can also go to the tower and fight the little green dudes with the big teeth for massive JPs. They're weak to thunder so shock the crap out of them; you can rack up to 44 JPs in one battle.

This 30 uses thing is still upsetting to me

It's kind of infuriating but most people here either defend it or say it's not a big deal.

I think it says a lot about Nintendo that they even built in the option to limit a goddamned demo to X plays. No one else does this.

This was my first random encounter in the field. Destroyed my party and I rage quit... quite hard for the first encounter in a demo. Didn't know I was playing Demon Souls.

Loving this game so far. Cannot fucking wait for the full release.

Also just realized what those letters are next to equipment: letter grades for how well the job can use them. Awesome.

Can someone provide a basic guide or advice for this demo? I chose my jobs, abilities, bought some stuff, went to the cave an npc mentioned and got butchered!

I just started recently as well, but IMO you should do quests in the overworld so you can get experience and money for equipment before you try any dungeons. You start off barely strong enough to handle the weakest overworld monsters.

Feels like the Dragon Quest VIII demo. You werent overpowered from the start, and even though you had access to more than normal, you still had to learn the ropes and level up.

Actually I think Microsoft did this with the Dead Rising demo for XBO. It was timed like 30 minutes for 2 uses or something

Microsoft does. Dead Rising 3 demo on Xbox One - can only be played twice per gamertag and is limited to 20 minutes per play.

Also considering I played the crap out of and beat A Link Between Worlds with 14 plays, I'm pretty sure 30'll cover me. I only have one game that's over 30 plays on my 3DS and that's Animal Crossing New Leaf at 45.

Yeah, time limits in demos are much worse than limited play times, especially at 30 times.

I've put a few hours into the BD demo. It's the last demo anyone should complain about.
